Wow! I just realized I've never introduced myself. Karateforums is the first ever forum I've ever joined, and well, being a noob in it all, I jumped to posting my first ever post in the weapons section almost a year ago. I think this is long overdue. My apologies to you all for being rude. I'm from the Philippines and I've trained a little bit of karate, taekwondo, jeet con do, arnis and aikido but never got past more than the second level because of health reasons (I was operated because of tumor) that plagued me during highschool. Glad to have survived it all. Now i'm in college and discovered that I had the knack for fencing. I learned it first as a PE, then joined the Fencing Club in my university without paying anything. I got lucky I guess. Now I fence three times a week. I am interested in weapons, but sadly all I could do right now is just read about them, as I neither have the time nor the resources. But one day soon, I will resume my training, God willing.

Paranoia in the martial arts
Sengra replied to RichardHangHong's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
When I was looking for a MA to train with back in highschool, I discovered the things mentioned above.Yeah, It was really political in the sense that instructors claiming to have their own form were in fact assistant instructors from other schools that broke up with their organizations one way or the other. When they teach, you can'y help but feel how they are slowly conditioning your mind that they are right and the others are wrong. They were short of saying never to join other ma clubs. I got disillusioned. I was for taking in as much as one can do in a lifetime. I finally ended up quiting and did not train until I reached college. Four years ago, I discovered the club that I joined no longer existed, though some say they just changed location. -
We must not forget that religion was used to justify war, just like in the Crusades and that MA's are after all, 'martial arts'.

Thanks. I hope I can find one.

Did you know that.......? (Martial Arts Trivia)
Sengra replied to RichardHangHong's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
14 events held at every modern day Olympic games: 100-, 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter races, the marathon, 110 m. hurdles, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, 1500 m. freestyle swimming, and individual saber. Taken from By the Sword, written by Richard Cohen. Oh. sorry my bad. I need to check my sources. Thanks -
For me, Jet Li would be the better fighter. Jacky Chan is funnier though, and a lot more flexible as an actor.

You train with balisongs? That's great. We have one here though it's kinda useless, its older than me and very rusty. When I was taking arnis, my teacher showed the class traditional Filipino daggers and short swords that may have been the source for the modern day arnis techniques. We Filipinos are smaller (I'm 5'10'', and I'm already considered 'tall') when compared to europeans, so, as my teacher said, we had to develop ways and means to use our height, that means using every part of the body such as the knees and elbow, and weilding handy weapons such as dagger and shortswords for quick movements.

Defending Against Being Attacked By a Piece of Fresh Fruit

Ballpens and pencils back in highschool, with notebooks as shields. -
Well, Mushashi, the angel of the sword believed in two swords.

I know there are already arnis schools outside the Philippines. I also heard from my teachers that foreigners come here to learn from the local arnis masters. I admit that I only know basic arnis as it is recquired in the Physical Ed. of some schools here. I took arnis as a PE class last semester. My teachers were good, they got the gold in the Southeast Asian Games held here. I really would like to pursue further training, but as I don't have the money and time, this dream of mine would have to wait. My fencing sked also prevents me from joining the arnis club.

What fencing blade brand is the best and how much does it cost?. My current epee blade is nearing its end.

Being attacked with a katana, what would you do?

If running does not count then I could only hope that the user is unexperienced, I would create a distraction or arm myself with anything that might help (especially blocking objects), then try to run if I can. -
