I think a Kata done correctly is "pretty" no matter what.

Well, in my school to sum it up, multiple striking, ending the fight quickly and painfully, flowing from each movement easily. There is also alot of reaction based movements, which my sound ineffective at first but there are so many ways of doing some techniques and modifications that almost evry angle gets covered. Hope that helps

I love both of those movies!! I went out and bought Prodigal Son, probably the best representation on Wing Chun to the public. I enjoyed Kung Fu Hustle and I liked that he used Iron rings, and the fact that he was a fairy cracked me up lol yeah,I have prodigal son,but I don't know if I should go and buy kung-fu hustle.Does anybody know if the dvd is subtitled or if it's dubbed?Actually I rented it and it is subtitled. I honestly think Im gonna go buy it when funds get around lol

Well, to start off im a believer that the only true and attainable wealth is knowledge and to me martial arts is a knowledge that is going to be my legacy to my daughter and any other children I have, and in the future, they have. Im only 21 now and my knowledge will cont. to grow and then grow through her. just as my Sifu's knowledge grows through me.

One thing I read was to do your Kata on different kinds of surfaces. Try going out to a feild or going to a pool or lake and doing them underwater. Also doing them on a hill or in the dark will make you more proficent(sp?) As for kumite take a page from boxing and stand in fron a mirror, also play out scenarios on your weakest points in your head. Good luck!

I was rooting for Cote in that fight, he had him, then he just couldnt finish it....Doerkonson(sp?) is quite an amazing fighter in his own right though -
What art is better for street fighting?
BLueDevil replied to Sinar89's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Bushido is a martial ideal, Way of the Warrior It could be considered a part of MA -
I agree with Sauzin, also I would use the free time to perfect everything and hammer on everything over and over again that you have already learned.

karate in the family lineage
BLueDevil replied to kitsune_no_tama's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I beleive I am the first one in my family to study then I convinced my Mom to let my brother join (he's 12) So he is now going to get his orange belt soon. That was one of the reasons I joined, was so I could a family legacy that I could pass along to my daughter and any other children in my future. -
Honestly I know I joined MA for the self-discovery aspect. And fighting was a secondary aspect. I beleived at the time I could fight already(I know what my limitations are now, had I run into someone that could actually trowdown but thats beside the point) I continue to push myself to new levels of health and awareness, that is to me more important than knowing how to fight, and I attribute that to MA. All in all I really enjoyed the article.

Styles in your city/ town
BLueDevil replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well TKD and Okinawan anything seems to be the styles of choice around here. Alot of the schools it listed are closed so that needs to be updated! I think I chose the right style and school for me, I went to all the available schools in my town and the one I chose was the only one that impressed me and has been ever since -
but the stuff in hero looks nothing like kempo and hung garI was looking for something practical so I went to EVERY place in my little city. I knew that stuff wasnt what I was going to learn, it was just a MA reminder that I wanted to learn something gotcha, you practice some pretty cool styles anyways

There are certain movements in Kempo that will help you avoid/defend against someone trying to clinch up. I dont think I would have a problem with someone trying clinch. I have also seen quite a few moves to avoid takedowns and holds that a grappler may put on. When my teacher was young he actually started out in Judo but went to kempo for its ability to inflict fast pain on his opponent, but he never discarded what he learned from Judo. So he lets us know what some grapplers will be looking for. -
Ive seen some crazy chicken kicks, one of which broke someones finger and the other (different set of fighters) knocked someone out!

Fight the person not the style.

UFC with kungfu only
BLueDevil replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I think there is alot of one dimentional thinking in that Kung Fu could not work. Kung Fu has alot of throws that could work and of course strikes that would work in the UFC. I believe that nobody has stepped up and put kung fu on the MMA map. BBJ fighters and grapplers give off that air that they are the only ones that can win in competition. I dont see what makes Kung Fu less effective than wrestling. They both have strengths and weaknesses. It seems people that say these things have never studied KF extensively, Im not saying that KF is perfect but you have to give it some credit. MMA is about utilizing what works and discarding what doesnt. -
He's right, though. Nimr Hassan was "ordered" to kill that old man and his wife by James Mitose (the man many call the "father of modern kempo"). Obviously we don't know this 100% but Mitose died in jail as he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Hassan "found" Islam and changed his name. He now teaches in Philly...some brand of Kempo Ninjitsu. I actually went to a class last night and loved it. I'll have to read up on that! Thats crazy, but thats cool you liked it and didnt judge it by one practicioner's actions Kempo Ninjitsu....yeah....

How many hours a week are you at your dojo?
BLueDevil replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well, I help instruct weds and thurs. 7-9 sometimes 10 pm. And when my work schedule permits I got Mon. or Tues. and I spend 2 hours on my days off in the morning at home working out. So it kinda varies on what I have going on -
That was outta nowhere! I havent heard to much on that style, but I would go check it out. Make sure you dont kill anyone

Palm Heel Strike Overrated?
BLueDevil replied to UseoForce's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
seen in more places than that. in pancrase, closed fist strikes aren't allowed. watch some of those. Specifically, watch some of bas rutten's matches. He is a master of the palm strike. I was just about to mention bas rutten. His first knockout was an ope palm to his opponent's liver! Alot of people dont realize how devistating an open hand is until they take one
