  1. Welcome
  2. No some styes are simply more effective than others, Percentage wise certain Stlyes dominate standup fighting...Muay Thai, Kyokoshin, San da etc...does that mean someone who trains in another stlye cant win? No the fighter determines alot but generally something like MT has dominate success. I tend to disagree. The type of event you are in is more important than the style. EX Ali could whip anyone in a boxing ring but would not do to well in the UFC. On the other hand R. Gracie won all sorts of UFC but would get killed in a boxing ring. Certin arts do better in certin events but that does not mean one art is more effective than another. Just my 2 cents.
  3. Simple answer. Because I am ready mentally. Style don't matter its the person. If anyone of us is day dreaming we can be attacked and KO at anytime. If we are on our guard and alert this is less likely to happen and if it does then the actions I take is a result of my work in the dojo not the dojo I am in. Sort of like in Football. It don't matter if your in a Run and Shoot or a Wing T. If you do what you have been trained to do you will be fine.
  4. I got some ocean front property in West Virginia for sell. LOL Yeah sounds like you got in a bad deal. Don't hold all TKD schools in the same light as the one you just left. McDojos come in all styles. Just got to be careful and ask a lot of questions before joining. Never sign a long term contract.
  5. I love getting new Shotokan members LOL Welcome
  6. Welcome
  7. Welcome You are never to late.
  8. Good Deal
  9. Depends on who they were looking at. Kung Fu - Bruce Lee Karate - Chuck Norris etc... Fighter makes the art the art don't make the fighter.
  10. Leaf your Shotokan as well right? Nevermind I just read below you name you were Goju Ryu. I guess the pic of Funaksoshi threw me off.
  11. Welcome to the boards
  12. Breaking is about power IMO.... No more no less. To hit with power means to hit with speed and not pull your punch. At some point we need to learn what it is like to hit something without pads and not pull our punch or kick. With that said we don't do much breaking in Shotokan.
  13. My guess on the rankings It was a mix between people studiing that art and its appeal in pop culture. EX we all have heard of Karate or Kung Fu. That is a term that refers to any MA to most people. Thai, Ninja, TKD are also pretty well known thanks to movies and junk. The ones on the lower half were basically new arts. I know BJJ is not new but its only become famouse the last 10 years thanks to the Gracie family. The same is true for Kav Maga (sp) cross traing and Aikido by Stevan Segal. The one that takes the cake is that crazy junk they do in Hawaii where you get punched and kicked int he throat and groin. Thats just nuts... Im sorry I just don't buy that.
  14. We don't break. Well we don't break for the sake of breaking. I have a few of those rebreakable boards laying in the corner. Sometimes we will get them out and show the class how. But as far as it being a grade on a test no. We break for fun but we don't do it very often.
  15. Great stuff maybe even better than free weights if done correctly.
  16. I don't think he is on the fourm anymore. At least he don't post if he is. Shame to I enjoyed reading his stuff.
  17. Welcome
  18. Shotokan Cons 1. You learn slow 2. Lack of Weapons 3. Many reps of Kata 4. Basic and Simple not flashy 5. Strong History you need to know 6. All the hidden moves (locks, cranks, chokes, takedowns, guard, etc) Pros 1. You learn slow 2. Don't waste time on weapons 3. Many reps of Kata 4. Basic and Simple not flashy 5. Strong History you need to know 6. All the hidden moves (locks, cranks, chokes, takedowns, guard, etc) Now if that is not a Yin Yang answer I don't kow that I can make one up. LOL. But honestly what everyone hates about Shotokan is what the true Shotokan student loves. So to each his or her own.
  19. Let me add. I don't any Shotokan teacher evan Funakoshi who said you should fight in that low stance in real life. The low stance is to build muscle not a techinque. If you learn to move low you move faster high. This is why kata is done low. Everyone outside of Shotokan wants to look at us and say how can you fight in that low stance. Well we don't. We train in it. So don't get hung up on the low stance... Its a training tool more than anything. Just like a punching bag.... Again I stress when in doubt about what Shotokan is read Funakoshi he is the founder and did a nice job expressing his views in all of his books.
  20. Shotokan is as G. Funakoshi describes it in his books. Reguardless of org. or school. We all do things differantly. Thus no 2 people have the "same style". However Funaksohi builds his style named Shotokan arround Low Stances, Hip Movement, and Kata.
  21. welcome
  22. I am a HS teacher as well and teach lessons out of a HS gym. However it is not tied to the school in any form. Honestly I would not try to mix the 2 because of problems you run into with people getting hurt and going after the school or Board of EDU. I don't know what the system is like in England but in the USA many people will try and sew for and over anything. Thus I only take people I trust. I teach private lessons. To do so I spoke with the principal at the school and had a statement drawn up by a laywer and everone who takes class signs it. Basically play at your own risk and if anything was to happen the school was not at fault. At the HS I teach at I teach a Health class and this CH we are on personal health. I have been doing some life time sports with them like tennis, volleyball, etc. The other day I did Karate showed them some stretches, blocks and one kick. At lunch I saw them showing other students. I did not like that. So be careful. Teaching in a school is one thing but I would not tie my class to students in the school.
  23. Thats a good problem right. LOL
  24. Welcome to KF
