  2. It really don't matter. Differant styles and differant org's have differant orders. In fact some styles that are the same will still be differant. A rule of thumb is basically this. Go from light to dark in color. Red is the one exception. You may see it early or right before black.

  5. I think they flow pretty good but I agree with Sai that the fact we teach on counts gives them a robot look until the student starts to understand the kata.
  6. Jab or Backfist to set up low roundhouse to knee or front sweep. While looking for a throw or lock. Very un-Shotokan huh. LOL However if I got them rocking and off guard I love landing the big spinning thrust or side thrust kick.... Now thats Shotokan....
  7. To help me with my footwork and handspeed in football.
  8. Welcome
  9. MTF I know what your talking about I have never had to do them but Im sure they are bad. I don't mind duck walks that much either or basics on one knee because I can feel myself moving and making ground. Just something about staying int he same place LOL.

  11. I hold a second black belt in a art like that. In college I wanted to take a bit of everything and a lot of nothing. I found a style named American TAO karate. My sensei Kanode was a very good Martial Artist with a lot to teach but I disagreed with his making of a new art. Sensei Kanode had a 3rd Dan in TKD, and Black Belt in Hapkido, and brown belt in TSD and Chin Na Kung Fu training. Instead of teaching one art he mixed the kata and techinques and made his won thing and refered to himself as 10th Dan. I never agreed to him doing that but because he was well trained and offered a good class I stayed with him. I was his first black belt student which made me fell both good and bad. However like I said he was a good teacher that I respect a lot. I just did not agree with his sales ptich and forming of a new style. We had many long talks about this. On my class flyers and stuff I only list my Shotokan ranks. I will make mention that I have trained in other styles but I dont attempt to teach American TAO nor do I sell it as an art. Not a good first black belt student I don't guess. LOL But again I was always up front about that with him. If you looking into most testing guidliens for Shotokan and other traditional arts most of us common people can only make it to 4th or 5th Dan. Then you run into age requirments and stuff. The higher Dans are set aside for the elders and org. leaders. You will never see a true 10th Dan under 60 if not 70. The higher Dans 8.9.10 are held for the oldest of the old. I tell my students to think of it like the Pope and his Bishops. Anyone can preach or be a black belt but only a select few ever get the big robe. If its done right anyhow.
  12. Sot of like walking from an exteneded push up postion right. I think I have seen them but never done then. I am a big guy and never had a hard time skipping rope. We used to do it for football all the time. However we never went much longer than 2mins periods. I don't mind lunges because I can feel myself moving but I hate squat kicks.

  15. Well as far as teaching karate with new kids. I go hard at first. If they are screwing arround and junk I give them squat kicks or something hard to do. That way I see if they are going to quit or what. However once you start to make ranks I move away from being so mean. Partly because they have already proven they can do it and partly because they have done it beofre and learned they don't like doing 100 squat kicks.
  16. Sadly anyone and everyone who wants can start their own MA and declair themselves a 10th Dan. I really disagree with that. Now lets say a person studies 2 arts such as TKD and Judo. The 2 offer differant approaches to training. If the person is well trained in both. I think they should be allowed to approach an International group and request the new art to be started. But for someone to take a dozen lessons and watch karate films and start a New System I say no. Changing an art. Well reguardless who close I teach my art to the way I was taught its going to be differant. So we all do this reguardless if we mean to or not. My problem here is you are selling a traditional art as a new art. Sounds kind of dirty to me. Now again like you said making TKD more like Thai and calling it Combat TKD. IMO you are always better to be honest with people. You say hey traditional TKD is like this but Im going to teach it like this because. Offer both options to them. You don't have to go into a lot of detail but don't use the name of a FAMOUS art and not teach that art. As far as the SD system. Its like this the only way you can do such a thing IMO is to have been there. So if a Navy Seal, SWAT Cop, etc who has personal exp. thats fine. But for a avg. Joe like me who has been in less than 2 fights his whole life to do so is wrong. Again this is not a MA as much as it is a course. If he wanted to make it a MA like Kava Maga or something then he needs to go in front of that international body I was talking about. Just my 2 cents.
  17. Im not a fan of beating kids. However when a kid gets its tail smacked with a belt for doing wrong you can bet they are less likely to do it again. One paddeling left schools you saw school violence go up, drop out rate go up, and test scores go down. You can do the math.
  18. Very good. You made this kata fan very proud. Sorry about the lip.
  19. Thanks MTF Kata brings out more of the inner aspect ot MA. That why we love it. Thats not to say Shadow boxing don't but there is something to be said for doing the same thing Masters done hundreds of years before you. The purpose of the hands to the hip to use full motion. You are right if you tried to spar with your harnds down there you would get killed. However what thats teachign you is to use the full muscle range. Again let me use the bench press ex. If you bench and take the bar to your chest and allt he way back up that is full motion. If you don;t get it to your chest or lock your arms that is half reps. Karate belives that by doing the full motion it makes you quicker and more powerful because your body is used to doing more work. Also remember there is "no first attack" In Karate. So lots of times with we get into a fight our hands are at our belt just because that is a naturla place to have them. So we work the punch from there. Instead of taking a second to raise our hands and then punch. I also trained with a guy who done Thai under a guy from Thailand. I olny worked with him a few months but I do have some insight to how they shadow box as well. In fact I don't work with those guys boxing anymore because a lot of the stuff I helped them with was to MA related. One other point ont he balance thing. I was referign to balance as in workign your right hand as much as your left. Not the ability to shift and move.
  20. MTF wrote ******** Where as katas aren't really done for exercise, they're set movements done to practice, what traditional artists believe are away of self-defense,due to their hidden techniques, even though they're not. Most traditional artists also believe the more kata you practice the better a fighter you will become. They believe martial arts can't do without kata, for ex.kata is the essence of karate do. Katas also involve different kinds of stances like shiko dachi, sanchin, etc. which are very much useless, where as in shadow boxing there are no stances other then natural fighting stance.""""" ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Just to make the point kata hides a lot more than stances. You say I should not talk about shadow boxing and I say you should not talk about kata. LOL. When you get deep into the kata you see throws, locks, ways to grapple, weapon defense, breaks, etc. Point is kata has a lot of hidden stuff only a true student of their art will learn with years of of training. As far as your statement about exercise please. Anything that gets the heart rate up is exercise. You can be walking to the bathroom and that is considered exercise. LOL. If you have ever done kata as in Shotokan you will know they are much more than just that. You legs ache from the low stances and when kata is done a full speed with proper timming you will be short of breath I promise. MTF I really enjoy thiis conversation. I think it does a lot for both MT and Shotokan. However as you have seen a few of our threads have been closed because it has broken down to you say I say. Im asking you to help me keep it controled. Because as I said these posts do a lot to open our eyes about our own art. So stay away from personal attacks and lets just talk about our arts. I know its an emotional subject. However for the sake of keeping these posts alive and these topic active keep it on the up and up. LOL. So I will be awaiting your post. I know you will have a good one.
  21. The things people say without ever having tried any certain martial arts, although I know you disagree with me on katas being useless, but the difference is I have at least done them before. If I am correct, like submission wrestling, jujitsu also uses angles by moving in all directions while on back in order to control opponent whether with legs or arms. Just to let you in on a little secret I have shadow boxed before as well. I helped train 2 Tuff Man Winners and One Golden Gloves Champion. So don't assume anything. Just a lesson for life.
  22. You know I am. LOL
  23. if your a righty you practice 90% of your moves right handed and if your a lefty you do the other. No big secret there. Kata is 50/50. Im not saying they are the same. The differance is SB offers you freedom and kata makes you work moves and combs that have worked for thousands of years. I don't know why you guys want to attack everything. Kata as much mental, and emotional as it is physical. Its like doing bench press vs push ups. Both are going to work the same thing its just a differant way of doing it.
  24. http://www.ska.org/ Here is their main site. It should have all the info you need. If not email or call them they will be happy to talk to you. However Im sure the dojo your looking at should be able to answer most of your questions.
