  8. I don't think you can teach yourself if you know nothing. If you have trained for some time its possivle to learn from books and other sources. However the big thing is you can't see yourself and correct yourself. Nothing impossible but you need a teacher if you can find one.
  9. Welcome
  10. As far as color there is a differance. The Yellow belts are usually more well for lack of a better word yellow. The Gold Belts are brighter and or darker. They do sell the 2 differant colors. Now with that said we call our first belt a gold belt but I have used yellow belts before because the local store was out. No big deal. As far as color and rankings it will change from school to school and style to style. A rule of thumb is usually the darker the belt the higher up it is but this is not always true.
  11. Ok that lost me I guess I need to find out what the Quck Brown is. LOL Stupid SAT questions LOL Lets say Kata is to Karate as the Dribbling is to Basketball.
  12. Training for fun and traing for rank are differant. IMO no kid under 16 should have a Black Belt. Thats just me agree or not. Their is way to much mental and emotional developemt involved in training. On the flip side I have saw many talented kid between the ages of 8 and 12. Some younger... But do they understand the mental part of karate in most cases I would say no. They are just athletes... I think the sooner you get kids involved in any sport or activey that teaches morals, balance, motor skills you are going to make that child better off. However giving a child a rank it is not mentally ready for can be very dangerous IMO. One note about people in other countries they don't test for belts like we do. You get one belt and thats it. Training is a life long process not somehting you take up for a few years and grow out of.
  13. You will soon see. LOL
  14. There should be a sizing chart in the book or on the page you are looking at.
  15. Ask ? What kata are you looking at?

  19. Grunt You can search Shotokan Karate and get lists of the terms. Go to your local book store and just look at some books some will have charts with word banks in them. There is a blue book called something like Karate Techinques and Stratgies. It deals with karate in general no certin style but it has some nice charts and word banks. Complete Shotokan Karate by Bell is also a good book to pick up.

That sounds about right for a style of karate.
  21. That is why I love traditional arts. Yeah it takes time and work but when you cross that bridge you are a mean cookie. Shotokan is much the same you see the speed and power a 5'5 150lbs 60 year old can have your just in amazement. Did you thank him for beating you up?
  22. Welcome Glad to have you at KF
