Another "what would you do" question
G95champ replied to TJS's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
One on one I would close the distance and try to choke or smother them. Assuming Im 315 I would use my weight to take their enenrgy. If a choke opened up great. If not I would buy my time till I could pass the guard and go into a mount and start pounding. Two or more of them on me. Geez I don't know. Hopefully that never happens but I would try and get out as quick as possilbe prehaps with a prayer break and groin strike. -
I studied Shotokan at home and other styles in college. Shotokan is my roots and what I train and teach but I used my college years to go arround to differant dojos and see what other styles and teachers did.

I don't give out info but I don't hide it either. I may wear my gi bottoms to workout in or show someone a move or something. I don't walk arround with a big sign that says hey Im a blackbelt.. Besides Im a lover not a fighter. LOL

Calming Black Belt Grading Jitters in Students
G95champ replied to karate_woman's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Part of becomming a black belt is being able to step up to the plate and get over fear. Loosing to a better person is fine but loosing to fear is not. This will be one of the greatest lessons she learns when becomming a black belt more so than how to throw a roundhouse and do a kata. -
So how do you accound for North and South Korea that did not split till the 1950's. Or in fact was under control of Japan or China for much of its history. What about Greece who has been controled by the Romans, Turks, British, over the years. What about the USA who's very existance is a mix of people from every nation? Arts are tied to countries but you can't say one art to one country that would be like saying Shakesphere only wrote one book.

KarateForums.com Survivor 2 Winner!

Nice job -
Shotokan Focus on low stance early in rank but as you work towards black you begin to work more freestyle stances. Shotokan is a nice mix of punching and kciking. However the style is built arround blocking and the counter punch but to say it favors punching over kicking IMO is not true. 55/45 split. One of the great things about Shotokan is you can spar any way you wish. Its powerful and fast enough to be used in full contact events and is often a base style of many MMA's. At the same time it has enough freedom in it that many top point fighters will use to because of its focus on shifting and counter attacks. Big focus on kata.

Test days Those being tested are the only ones in class. Class it closed to anyone of a lower rank than that being made. Students must warm up by themselves or together but not formal beginning to class is given. Test consists of Basics 1. Punching - Strikes 2. Blocking 3. Kicks 4. Combos of these mixed up. Stance, Hips, Focus, are always watched. Sparring or Self Defense (differant each test) 1. 3 step 2. 1 step 3. free style 4. multi attackers 5. weapons Kata Oral Q and A session. We do nto break or have physical fitness requirments like 100 set ups in x amout of time. Thats about it.

Style means nothing. The person doing any given style means everything. -
MMA or traditional
G95champ replied to kick_azz's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I think all of us have looked for a quicker way at one time or another. Both are good and serve differant purposes. Traditional arts offer all MMA does but it takes longer to bring it out. Some like to challenge of finding it whatever it is and other like to gain as much knowledge as quick as they can. Nothing is wrong with either answer. -
Anytime a stand up fighter goes to the ground they are beat. You know that I don't care if your Shotokan, TKD, MT, KM, JKD, etc. Shotokan gives you the chances of a quick KO and thus they always have a chance. None of those were leagal in the early UFC's. There is also a differacne in going to the ground on a padded mat and on a parking lot. You will never change mind nor will I change yours but any quality black belt should be able to hold their own. I mean they may loose but they will live. Broken arms and noses are possible in any fight.
-
Yeah Im saying any true black belt can hold their own against anyone. Now true is the key word. Gracie and Tank, and Tito and anyone you want to add to that list. Those guys are great but they fight with rules. A true black belt will attack Groin, eyes, throat, etc... Your right sparring is not fighting. Im not saying Tank and Tito won't do that either but my statement was hold their own now win.

Good Deal sounds like you had a good first class and the pain will pass but you never get used to it. LOL. Good Luck.
-
I know it sounds hard but why does this bother you. Best way to stop conflit is to stay away from people that can cause it. This group you refer to just stay away. Turn the tables and say yeah your right it don't work. No big deal who cares....

You use whats the situation give you. However I do not teach or focus on high kicks I think they get you hurt. As far as hand placement. To each his own. Lots of times with street fights you don't have time to get them up because you are already hit.

Searching for something more

If your not happy then you don't need to be doing it. Don't matter if it MA or anything else in life. Find what makes you happy and go with it. -

Karate fits well with any style because of its balance. Before changing styles I would advise you to stick with TKD until you made your black blet that way you have some closure and will be educated enough to know the differance in the 2 arts.
-
Shotokan like most traditional arts does not offer instant feedback. A true Shotokan black belt will hold his or her onw anywhere any place any time against anyone. I did not say win I said hold their own. Kuy ranks on the other hand is just a learing process and lots of the moves don't seem useful and ofter boring. If you want to learn to fight in 2 weeks get in a Muay Thai class. Shotokan is not a quick fix but its a long term answer. Just got to figure out what you are looking for.

do guys like chicks that a martial artists?
G95champ replied to IAMA_chick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Key to any relationship is for both people to share common intrests. If I like MA and my GF don't then hopefully we share another intrest. On the flip side if we both love training thats just another place we can spend time and enjoy each other. So to answer you question just depends. I don't think MA is a key thing they look for in personal ads. LOL. -
