  1. Welcome to KF
  2. If I had to rate skills you needed to be a good fighter they would be. 1. Toughness - Bottom line you got to be mean and don't care to get hit. 2. Ability to Think - Know your self and know your attacker. Be calm and relax let the fight to come to you and don't rush and make stupid mistakes. 3. Speed - Speed plus Techinque = Power. 4. Techinque - If you hit the right place reguardless of strength you can get the KO. 5. Endurance - Don't punch out and don't get winded. 6. Strength - IMO its not important. MASS is more important than strength meaning its harder to make range on a tall person and it harder to grab a person with big arms etc.
  3. Again I would bet the Gracies are not very strong.
  4. To my knowledge no one has found a way to measure the size of one's HEART and that has more to do with making a great fighter than any bench press mark does. However to give your question and answwer I would be very shocked if any Gracie could bench more than 200lbs because their style of fighting playes on endurance and wearing the other guy down till he makes a mistake they can take advantage of. On the flip side I would say a Colman or Kerr can Bench Press a truck. However muscle don't make one a great fighter. Both those guys got a HUGE Heart. So to answer your question It don't matter. Now its a given the stronger you are the more its going to help you but at the same time there is not limit you must be at before you can win anything.
  5. Thanks I think LOL
  6. Don't get ahead of your teaching. Meaning don't try and do certin things your teacher has not worked with you on because its hard to undo whats been done. Could be techinque, kata, SD move, etc. However a punching bag is hard to go wrong with. If you do kata then you can do kata over and over. 10,000 reps to master one. So get started. LOL. Reading this board and other MA web sites always helps. Train the brain as much as the body and always train the spirit.
  7. do more balance drills
  8. Best bet would be gas. Caused by nervers and excitment. LOL. Often times when we do something special we gain a feeling of self worth. Be it make an A on a test or get a date for prom. Diffeant things make us feel good and that is the feeling you felt. Don't put a lot of stock in this magic art MA offers. I love Ki and I belive in Ki but at the same time you must realize there is nothing magic about it. Just the ability to control you feelings and emotions.
  9. If a person is driver to act only because of words then Matrial Arts has taught you nothing. Sticks and Stones I always say. Don't worry about it. If he keeps it up stop hanging out with him. The key to staying out of trouble is to put yourself in situations that are less dangerous. If he continues to push the question then stop haning arround him so he won't have the chance to.
  10. Football - The Program hands down. But I enjoyed Varsity Blues a lot. The Longest Yard is a classic as well. Baseball - Geez there is a buch Field of Dreams is awsome but Bull Durom was the original. 8 Men Out is great as is Cobb. Then Major League not 2 and 3 and 15 just Major League. Basketball - Hoosiers is in a leage of its own. Which By the way is anothr good baseball movie although its girls. Funny sports film - Caddy Shack is great. Happey Gilmore is Sandlers best. What about Cool Runnings But Major League again may be the funniest. MA movie - I don't know I have ever seen a MA film and thought to myself that was realistic. So I don't think I can pick one. However like most of us Bloodsport will always be a great movie no matter how much we dislike Van Damne or Frank Dux. LOL
  11. Ki - is your life force, inner energy. Yes Shotokan does have it. We don't draw it out as much as say Kung Fu does but we stress the Kia and the development of Ki. Meditation - Don't think of it like Star Wars or Ninja movies. Its just a way to relax. Close your eyes and take deep breaths. Not much more to it than that. Just clear you mind. Some people like to use tention techinqes or move their arms in a series of blocks. To each his own.
  12. Well I would hope you would would not fight anyhow. SD is one thing but fighting for the sake of fighting is wrong. Rank means next to nothing when you gage fighting ability. So don't read a lot into it. 1. Can you take a punch' 2. How athletic are you opposed to them 3. Size 4. Age 5. Muscle Mass 6. Speed 7. Handicaps or Injury 8. Luck 9. Circumstances (drunk, sick, etc) 10. Fear All can cause a higher ranked person to loose. Fighting ability does not relate to rank as we think it should. I always thought their was some smoke and majic that went with being a black belt till I became one. The postion of MA to not having to fight by knowing how to fight. Or as President Reagan once said Peace by force.
  13. Gichin Funakoshi said it takes 10,000 reps to master a kata. Shotokan has 28 kata or so. Depending on the school and association. Each kata takes about 1-2 mins to do. Give you self a min or so for rest between each so lets say you can do one kata every 5 mins. 5x28,000 = 140,000 mins 140,000 / 60 = 2333.33 hours 2333.33 / 24 = 97.22 Days Ok so in theroy you could learn karate kata in less than a year. Lets say you train 3 nights a week in 2 hr classes. Lets say you do kata about 3 of those 9hrs. 3hrs x 52 weeks = 156class hrs a year you do kata. Lets assume you misse 10 classes a year for vacation, sickness, work etc. so really only 126hrs of class kata a year. 126hrs a year goes into a total time needed of 2333.33 = 18.5 Years of class time to know the kata alone. I really have no clue what Im getting at just showing that its going to take a long time to actually learn the kata to (master a style).
  14. I agree KarateWoman 100% I have asked more than a few students not to come back for those reasons. Luckly I teach at a local YMCA and the profit is split 50/50 with the Y. Unlike a lot of teachers I teach for fun and not as a source of income so I can make such a stand. However when you need 30 kids to make enough money to keep the club open there are certin things you have to put up with like it or not. Thank God I have never had to face that problem.
  15. Price Ranges depending on the population and wealth of the area you are in. I teach in WV a poor state in the USA and classes range from 30-50 depening on where you are. I know big cities like Philly may charge 100.00 a week. So price is a local issue and can't be answered. Things to keep in mind is the number of classes, size of them and times they are offered. As far as EXP goes. Well lets assume you make your black belt in 2 years. Which is quck but not unheard of. Also assuming you have been given premission by your Sensei to teach then go for it. This to is really a question that can't be answered. Sure the more time you got in the better a teacher you will be. However I may not teach as good at 10 years as you may teach after 3. In all reality I would say 5. This would include making your first or second black belt. Teaching under you Sensei at his club for a year or so. But again their are no rules on it. McDojo IMO is taking money for rank more so than it is teaching many styles.
  16. But the next karate kid was a girl. LOL And out own Karate Kid 1975 is a girl lol.
  17. Bone size has a lot to do with this. Your wrist don't have a lot of muscle arround it. Thus your not going to make them juge by lifting or squeezing although you will gain some. You can make them strong but gaining size will be very hard if not impossible. Good luck.
  18. Welcome
  19. 6'1 315lbs My pic is in the photo sections Im 25 BTW.
  20. The City or town or state you are in then TKD Accademy, CLUB, DOJO, or School Your last name TKD Accademy. Club , dojo, or school The name of your teaches Club and start a franchise.
  21. 1. Good Person - He don't have to be a saint but he should be well respected by people in the community. You don't want to train under a thug. LOL. Friendly, Honest, Well Mannered, etc... 2. Knowledge - IMO this is more important than skill. You see a lot of great athletes who can't coach. You also see a lot of great coaches who were bench warmers. A good teacher don't mean he can kick the rim of a basketball goal or break 20 boards. They need to know what they are teaching and have to be able to get it across to you and others. People learn at differant speeds and paces and a good teacher should be able to work with each kind of studnet. 3. Ability - This IMO is the last thing you should look at. However its not unimportant. If your teacher can show you how to do certin techinques, kata, SD moves, etc then you are probably getting taken. But knowledge IMO superseeds this.
  22. If your not welcome something is wrong. LOL. MA is all about respect. It may take a while for you to catch up to the people your age who started before you did but not big deal. Lean at your own speed and don't rush it.
  23. Just search for them on line.
  24. It happens. LOL Lots of us get blinded by our art or our teachers to think our style is the best or teacher is the best. No big deal. Once you learn that all are good and can help you then you are truely growing as a Martial Artists. Congrats.
