  1. Tokken, there is now 6 pages of lengthy detailed explanations as to why people believe Kata is effective. Unfortunately, the only comments by you are short and unsubstantiated. Please could you post a detailed message as to why you believe Kata are useless and also to perhaps rebutt or concur some of the opinions here.
  2. FANTASTIC way of putting it!!!
  3. The other thing you can do is seperate your feet. This lightens the load a little, once you have this, then move them closer together.
  4. So what day are you up to now?
  5. This is fairly common when training on hard wood floors. Give it a week to rest and go back to training. If it keeps happening, speak to your GP.
  6. It's well known that these sort of competitions do exist, but as for Frank Dux, see posts above.

I have to disagree about sambon tsuki or similar combinations, for a begginer at least. Think of a simple one or two techniques. As Miller said, it's more about timing (and distance) than the technique used. Wait for the opening (or create it) and then go for a simple one-two. If that doesn't work, break away and try again.
  8. I've now been doing Karate for 19 years. I have not learned a jump kick yet (except the one at the end of Kanku Dai), nor do I wish to. I figure if I need to jump to hit the guy, I'm aiming too high.

as PAL said, can you please provide more info as to what happens when you try to bend your knee more.
  10. Your statement is indeed correct. As for the style, it could be anything. My guess is it would be something based on either Goju or more so, Kempo (chinese Karate).
  11. No, but out of curiosity, how do you use a floor bag for grappling arts?
  12. You raise a good point. The problem I guess is that although the short guy can get underneath, the tall guy has longer limbs.
  13. Is more concerned about the personal progress of his/her students than the growth of his/her school. Will always take the honourable way over the easy way. Is humble enough to realise that every student is his teacher. Is respectful enough to realise that each of his teachers still have something to offer.
  14. Definately. As someone else said, i think that applies to anything that is highly technical and takes great dedication.
  15. Yes, but how many of those scenarios were they smacked out on heroin? Trust me, that makes all the difference! I too have held down many people bigger than myself, but not when they are high as a kite! I'm not taking offence and not criticising what you are saying. In your experience, you are right. All I'm saying is that if you've never tried to control someone that is experiencing drug abuse, you couldn't possibly be expected to understand. I have never yet met a security officer yet who didn't underestimate the effect it would have.
  16. How did it not look real?
  17. Bushido_Man96, Great Post!!
  18. I find dance mixes are the best. Wild or Skitz Mixes.
  19. Ninjanurse, you hit the nail on the head. It's hard to find the balance between promoting self discipline/MA and allowing them freedom. All you can do is help them to see why they should go to training, but if they really don't want to, I don't think you should force them.
  20. I didn't realise Patrick McCarthy was Shukokai!!
  21. http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/jiffbox/this_thread_is_useless_without_pics.gif Show us how you went! Sounds like you did OK. As for suggestions, anything that is flashy works for demos. Don't worry about practical. Biggest flashy movements you can think of. Breaking, Throws and Weapons are always a big hit. Don't worry about complex movements, they don't understand them anyway.
  22. The problem is, Martial Arts are not main stream enough to warrant someone picking up the bill for that kind of research.
  23. To everyone that's replied, if I haven't quoted you specifically, thanks for the replies. It's great to see people enjoy this site as much as I do. Whenever I hit a low in my MA's, I just come to this site and it re-boosts my interest. Thanks again all!
