  1. Ninpo The hand movements are supposed to be mind guides, you focus your mind for the specific goal- more energy, courage, invisibility, etc. you focus on your hands, which according to Buddhist accounts can have different effects on your chakras. Also, you have to picture the "god" or "realized goal" in your mind to awaken the power within. I'm not an instructor in this, nor have had the training, so, I cant confirm the validity of deities and/or chakra manipulation.
  2. if your stance is done well, the hit should work. you should try to relax your arm, if it gets too tense and meets a hit on your elbow(by your opponent), your arm could break easily. also, if you are too tense, you wont be able to "feel" your opponents movements well.
  3. lol seriously, if you are cornered, your shoe should be enough to defend against a chain and move in on the attacker
  4. that would have to be one fast snake stylist.... I wouldnt chance it
  5. if you are talking of how most tae kwon do practitioners sparr (with one side to the opponent), I wouldnt put all of my weight on my front leg unless I wanted my attacker to break my knee. but, hey, we all have our style, right? WC however, has a completely different stance, in which the torso( in WC center) must point in the direction of the attacher always to provide full energy output(or strenght) against the opponent.
  6. I have been reading about one of the XingYi "subsystems"(if it can be called that), Da Cheng Chuan. I would like to know more about Xing Yi from people who have experienced it firsthand, so if anyone here has practiced it, or faced against a Xing Yi practitioner. I have already begun to feel the changes in what this training brings, still a lot more to cover, but, what have you guys felt? How long have you been training? How long do you train for? how do you feel about sparring with other styles? any other info about your Xing Yi style you might want to share is welcome here!
  7. It all depends on how you are taught, and how you train for the street. dont think a collar grab is all you're going to see on the street, or a very slow punch that "may" hit your chest. Train for every possible situation, collar grabs, throws, defense agains various punches, how to apply locks , how to kick, how to block kicks, how to take down kicks, etc... Farang Mu Sul was born from Hapkido, and it is an art I see as pretty effective on the street, I think Hapkido has great potential as a self defense art.
  8. arent your kicks effective? if you dont have any faith in yourself, even with a sword you wont be able to defend yourself against an unarmed attacker train to be effective WITHOUT shoes, then work up to normal wear, then uncomfortable shoes- you will see you will want to avoid anything heavy or uncomfortable when you go out.
  9. I have practiced with what I've found from Chi Kung books - The Way of Energy and The Way of Power by master Lam Kam Chuen. These books are on Da Cheng Chuan- a form of Chi Kung I've been practising for a bit and its helped me develop strength, balance and higher overall energy on my everyday life.
  10. I just want to add - erasing any defeatist thoughts from your mind. Not straining to be focused on something, but allowing your mind to settle naturally, on its own.
  11. breathing is the key. Learn to breathe naturally, the rest will come to you. find a good instructor and like they said, start reading up on material.
  12. I just received some material to study shaolin panther form on DVD. Maybe now I can learn what it is about Thank you every for your posts! keep them coming
  13. Kung Fu guys tend to be very flashy but have no real striking power. Tomo Some but not all of us. Ehmmm.. Well said Lol, they might not have real striking power, but if they can get 10 hits in by the time the opponent hits once, they might get the advantage. a friend of mine from Kung fu had a lot of speed, mixed it up with training to grow stronger and delivered hard and really fast strikes- very hard to counter
  14. kickboxers have very good stamina- you are not likely to tire them out.MAke them come to you.(try to counter what they throw at you, but dont try to exchange hits with them as they are trained to take advantage in that situation) Karate practitioners, try fast hands, chances are they will open with a kick. Kung Fu practitioners- depends on the style- mostly, watch out for the hands.(this varies a lot) Kung Fu practitioners are fast, most I know are in very good shape. Use pure power against these and avoid using any kind of strike that can leave an opening for too long.(no flashy kicks, a closed guard)
  15. I know it must have sounded wrong to say: I took my vengeance but in reality, we are very good friends and we have a lot of fun when sparring.
  16. Personally, the forms interest me. that and seeing how to appply it.
  17. A man should not be judged by the color of thier belt but by thier content of thier charcter it is not always a good idea for a new person to be againts a more skilled erson though, Ever got kneed in the balls using straight knees when your suppose to do curve ones to the ribs? hasn't happened to me, and I don't want it to either Happened to me. kneed me in the groin- thankfully I always wear a cup. it still hurt like Hell -but I took my vengeance- sweep and pound on the floor. of course, it was sparring in self defense class, so, anything could go as long as it didnt cause permanent damage.
  18. not really, in my school, the first sparring lessons are done "yellow belt/black belt". If you are training in Mixed Martial Arts, be ready to learn to fight- if you're worried about someone being bigger on practice, dont you think you'll get scared if you meet someone like that on the street? this is done so you start letting yourself go without tensing too much while fighting. Besides, he might be a black belt, but if they are "teaching you" how to sparr, the black belt will go easy on you, even if he is that much bigger than you.
  19. Japanese Jujitsu is great for self defense- ask for real applications you might use. Shotokan could be used for self defense too - but I'm in love with Jujitsu, so... go with Jujitsu!!!
  20. in the street- a nice hit to the neck should do the trick- you could also: break the knee, break the ankle, break the arm, kick the ribs, sweep and kick the face(or stomp),scratch his eyes out, stab with your keys, and so on..... at school- groin or a strong hit to the stomach's opening(right below the sternum) --be smart, nothing that leaves a mark!!!
  21. huh, interesting are they ust katas or subsystems inside karate?
  22. Are animal Forms, like in Kung Fu, present in some Karate styles(other than Kenpo) where you can actually see the animal forms in their movements instead of just using some hand forms for some hits or blocks?
  23. lol, break the fall dont they teach how tobreak falls anymore? lol
