Adonis replied to Canoe2fish's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion

Why no wrist locks in BJJ?
Adonis replied to Treebranch's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I know what you mean when you got a limb isolated, but when you first start out weather kneeling or standing, doing a tradional Japense Wrist lock or throw is difficult to do. I see of Roy Harris doing them, I think his student Roy Dean, how ever I don't see it common at all. Its something that has to be developed for awhile. Thats why I say they aren't high percentage to me, I really don't want to spend the time on those types of locks. -
Why no wrist locks in BJJ?
Adonis replied to Treebranch's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I am not very good at wrist locks when my partner is resisting so I don't really go for them. Roy Harris, is good with them and can pull them off in training. He has developed it to be a good percetage move to him. Roy is a BJJ black belt in San Diego. He is part of the Dirty Dozen which is a term used for the 1st 12 american BJJ Black belts. Any way, I feel personally that it takes awhile to develop that skill to do it when your partner is resisting or to catch them in it. So I rather spend my time on other stuff. Its more of a prefrence then any thing else. -
Tiger speaks the truth. Bitting, eye gouging can change things up quick.

stances are for stability, and moving the weight. However as far as if you want a stronger stable stance. Holding drills probably work for you better. Get a timer and get into a particular stance you have a hard time with. Ie. Cat stance. Then hold it for 1 or 2 mintues how long you can stand it. work that 2 or 3 times a day. Working on keeping it stable. Your legs will stregthen up, and your stance will be come stronger. You can also have a partner help you out while you do the timed stance drills. Have a partner push on you a little bit while your in your stance at diffrent angles and you hold a stable postion while you get pushed on. Not hard where your thrown over, enough to test your balance and stability so you can improve that area you want to work on. I hope that helps.

shorikid, Yes that is true. If I am mounted or I have guard, or any postion on the bottom, if strikes are getting thrown I try to get top position quick. It is defiently sense of urgency. You got time on your side when your rolling for fun, but when getting punched that changes every thing. I notice some technique goes out the window also.

Eddie ´´twister ´´ bravo.
Adonis replied to Rainbow_Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Eddie has mentioned it in several interviews. He doesn't want to fight MMA. He developed his style to control the opponents posture so he doesn't take punishment with strikes in case he did MMA. However he doesn't like working wrestling and striking, conditioning, that it takes to do MMA. There really isn't much money in it starting out. He is more into doing his music and teaching his system of Jiu-Jitsu. Unless he gets a rematch against Royler I don't really see him going to compete in Jiu-Jitsu any more either. He hasn't since 2003 Abu Dhabi. However he has plenty of people go through his gym so he does get the oppurtunity to roll with some good guys, Aoki, Dean Lister, and many others. He was invited awhile back to teach his system at ATT, with the likes of Liborio, Marcello Garcia, and many other good fighters there. -
How scared REALLY are you to fight?
Adonis replied to Throwdown0850's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am always scared, or nervous. -
A good book to check is BJ Penn's MMA book of knowledge. It shows his style of blending strikes with grappling. I just got a month ago. It is really good. Shows how he blends in his strikes to set up his take down. I just wanted to recommend it. I usually do one or the other in training. However seems to be adjustments have to be made when you do both, so they flow together, so they compliment each other better.

Wearing club logos or clothes on the street?
Adonis replied to Canoe2fish's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I wear martail art shirts all the time, I got a few for free, I need to get my broke self out and buy other clothes. hehe! -
I am glad you enjoyed my humor Honestly for that situation or any on the ground I think of the quote that I think JJ Machado or one of the Machado's used. "The ground is my ocean, and I am the shark, and most people don't even know how to swim." That quote fits perfectly in those situations if people don't train for that sort of stuff.

Gogo - Plata!
Adonis replied to Mischievousjoe's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Well any fights in California the Athletic comission there does a good job of testing. I think it has ran rampant for years, since almost the begging of the sport in America. Only diffrence is now that people are getting drug tested and getting caught. -
Honestly, I would probably just scream, cry, and then when the get up in total disgust and walk away at my pathetic display. I kick them in the back, and run away. That will show them!

so what kind of Karate tatics and foot work you are using? I know you come from a Chuan fa, shotokan background. I am curious on the spefics. I faught mma matches before 3 of them. I ended up 1-2. With the 2 I lost I wasn't totally confident in my ground skills and my karate training wasn't up to par. I really just did them because I was afraid and I wanted to say I went in there despite of it. My last fight was in Aug/2007. That one I wanted to win. It went good for me. However I still don't like getting hit, and I don't like cutting weight. Especially Sauna part afterwards. Were I don't drink any water. Even after all that I still don't consdier my self a fighter. I tried it out, it was fun at the time. However I still wouldn't say I am fighter. I prefer BJJ right now, mostly I have been doing nogi, and started working more on my wrestling take downs. -

thinking of boxing I think of the bobbing, weaving, foot work, cominations, diffrent set ups. I found boxing very intersting. I just don't like getting hit. So I prefer grappling. -
If he is mounted I don't see how some one would arm bar him. Unless your not talking about a bjj armbar, but using the hands one grabing the wrist the other striking the elbow to arm bar, or break his arm?

Hey thats good though, get to teach BJJ Plus continue training in shotokan again. Thats good! congradulstions!

ps1, that really sucks! Jealousy, hurt feelings, and greed does that to people. Thats how it was with my first BJJ instructor. I am better off that I left.

Eddie Bravo's rubber guard
Adonis replied to danbong's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The book is really good. You can do alot of stuff with it. The video is nice also. I like the lock down also. Helps out not getting passed and lets me get to my side for a minute to work my sweep game. -
Eddie Bravo's rubber guard
Adonis replied to danbong's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have been playing with the lock down alot more lately. It has helped out my half guard in breaking down my opponets base. It has helped me keep control of my opponent and slowed down any guard passing giving me time to sweep. I baught Eddie Bravo's Mastering the rubber guard dvd. back in April or May and finally got it a few days ago. It has alot of intersting stuff on it about his style of playing the half guard, I picked up some intersting moves that I have played around with. Just wanted to share my experience. -
I push off the ground with my feet, Hip rotation, and shoulder rotations into my punch, as well as rotational torque in the hand, and the pull/snap back of the hand to generate the power of a punch. Depending on the strike if its down ward or up ward. I will bend or come up with the knees depending on the strike.

I was at a TMA school that had an instructor there for awhile who taught a little bjj, he was a high white belt at the time. I gained a passion for BJJ because of him but had to leave him a few months later because we didn't see "eye to eye" I a couple other schools and instructors, but that was because of moving, I haved visited before and I was always welcomed back. It was on good terms. Cross said it best with "The main thing i would suggest is that you leave on good terms if possible. That way you will always be welcome back." -cross
