I like to know the history to an extent. Most of it is political (and I hate politics). But knowing a rough history is good enough for me. But I do love finding out about kata's/forms. The history, the bunkai, ect. My instructor always talks about training with the grandmaster, and it does interest me.

Why do you study TKD?
karatekid1975 replied to The Saint's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well, that's up to my instructor. My instructor believes in a well-rounded art also. He mixes what he has learned (three styles in all, I think) together. I would call it a "hybred style TKD" but I donno if he would. But it is a good system -
Conquering My Fears

I agree G. Thanks IAMA_chick -
Hey, I am in the same situation I did TSD, then moved. Now I do TKD (no TSD here either). But what I do now (TKD MDK) is so similar to TSD (except for the beginner forms, which are the taegeuks) that it's not funny. I love it, though. Welcome to KF

Conquering My Fears

Thanks, guys I don't think I'm "all that" now when I spar, but now, at least, I can get in there and hold my own. It's good enough for me Even if I don't win, it's still a learning experience It's actually fun to loose, because I can learn from my mistakes. It sounds weird, but it's true. It's a good thing -

Um, I'm not trying to pick at you, but my TKD school does grappling. We don't just kick and spar. We do joint locks, throws, take-downs, stand-up grappling and ground grappling. Anyways, I started MA for self defense in TSD. While I TSD IS a good self defense art for the stand-up fighter, I do have to agree with Akima's last sentence. -
New to MA's
karatekid1975 replied to Steinie's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Here's two places: Stone's American Karate in Portsmouth, OH (9 miles) Damron's Karate Studio Ironton, OH (about 18 miles) Not much to choose from I think your best bet is look in the phone book, and search the YMCA's. Usually the YMCA's MA programs don't advertise. At least the ones around my area don't. -

Steinie, Yea I can be more specific Like Rick E said, cut out the soda. Drink bottled water instead. When you work out, drink a sports drink, like Gatoraide or something similar. A lot of red meat can have lots of fat. Try eating veggies with your red meat. Like salad (lettuce tomatoes, cucumbers .... it can be fun building a salad ) or mixed veggies. Try to cut back on your portions of meat. Better yet, make your own burgers with lean meat. Ribs are VERY fattening. You can usually eat lean steak (cut the fat off), and don't eat a piece no bigger than your fist. Chicken wings .... fattening. Better yet, here is a link that has different types of diets on it for different folks. Look up a diet that may fit your body type http://www.dolfzine.com/altpage03.htm This might help better than I can I'll have to do a search for your location, as far as schools go. I'll Post my results in a while -
TKD bashing?
karatekid1975 replied to NightShade_UK's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
You were a victim of a Mcdojang Sorry to hear that. But you did find elsewhere to train, which most people in McDojangs should do -

Hiya, Seth Rick E gave sound advice. When I started MA, I was also overwieght. MA actually got me into good shape. But when I started eating too much pizza, fried food, Burger King, ect I actually gained some of the weight back So don't eat this stuff Stick with broiled (not fried food), fresh chicken breast (without the skin), cut the fat off of your meat as much as possible, eat more veggies and fruit. And watch your portions. Most men can't do this (which I can understand), but I no longer eat red meat. I dropped 10 pounds without even trying (and I ate a lot of red meat within a week). As far as your ideal weight, that depends on your body type. You may gain weight at first with MA, because you will be building muscle. But yet, you'll loose fat. Muscle weights more than fat, so don't get discouraged if you don't see weight coming off. I can help you with the hunt for a school. PM me your location, and I'll look for you P.S. I won't be hard on you about your first post But I'll move this to "Getting started in MA." -
I haven't got that far yet, but I heard our BB tests are pretty hard. My instructor does put you under "mental stress" on purpose. How? I donno. But I heard that you DO have to fight two on one, after free self defense, standing grappling, and grappling. For how long? I don't know that either.

Hey

I do sometimes. I just decide to take a day off, and do something else. It can be good to rest or put your mind to something else for a day or two. Then when you go back to training, you feel "refreshed." Ay least, I do, anyways.

Is it safer in the Dojo???
karatekid1975 replied to shotochem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
LOL. Maybe I used to have a lack of coordination while training LOL. -
Interesting topic I heard all the above mentioned from current and previous instructors. My fav would be the elbow strike. Or it and be the "grap and pull" thing. That can continue on to be a take-down/sweep. I also agree with Drunken Monkey about the lazy punches. Champering the hand helps you know or realize what both your hands are doing. When I help the kids with their forms, I ask them about what their non-punching hand is doing. Usually when I ask, it's just dangling around, but once they realize that it's not champered, they pull it up real fast.

I used to when I first started MA. I worked third shift. It wasn't so bad getting to class, but it was hard to get enough sleep to get through class, plus an 8 hour night shift. I do work two jobs now, but one of them I work at my dojang. So I'm already there when my class starts.

I have a fetish about coffee, so it's almost the same I love my coffee. Don't look at me or even talk to me till I had my first cup in the morning LOL.

Today was testing, so we did "whatever" between people testing. It was fun Lotta kicking and basic stuff, which is good to go back to now and then.

I agree, The Saint. Good post.

I want the "Moo Duk Kwan" symbol on my left arm. My first art was Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. Now I do Tae Kwan Do Moo Duk Kwan. So I think it would be ideal for me.
