Question of style
UseoForce replied to Aodhan's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Hapkido is awesome if you have a good school close by. Combat Hapkido is even better, especially you want ground fighting. Check out ICHF.com. But remember, if they are not training hard at the particular school, it doesn't matter how "good" the art is, you won't be able to use it in combat -
Question of style
UseoForce replied to Aodhan's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
A primary advantage of grappling is the ability to train all-out without getting hurt (judo, wresltling, and BJJ are a few examples). Whatever you choose, make sure it incorporates all-out training. I don't know much about the art you mentioned, so I can't judge it. JJJ has excellent techniques (It forms the basis of Hapkido ), but many schools train only in a static fashion. Be sure to check training methodology as much as technique. The MMA schools are the exact opposite. They have a great training methodology, but may not be geared towards self-defense (more sport like). Still, if you have the right mindset, this can be easily overcome. You also said you wanted to learn in-fighting. The elbow, knees, and clinch work of infighting would be covered well here. I'm not a big fan of Aikido personally. But that's just me, there's no reason why you should feel that way without checking out the school. -

Thanks, Ninjanurse, thats what I was looking for. I'd love to hear some more detail and about how long this training took. Thanks. -
High kicks, high risk
UseoForce replied to Densetsu Bushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Agree on all counts. I think the basic idea is to not limit yourself, i.e. saying "I am a judoka, it is better than all other martial arts, and there is nothing I can learn from other martial arts." OR, to actually make this relevant: "High kicks are terrible. They should never be used. They serve no purpose." (I don't mean this) "Openmindness" might be another good way to describe JKD. -

Lots of Air Force guys . I wonder if they get more in Army or Marine Corps. -
I think his parents understand now (with a little help from me) and will be changing his school.

High kicks, high risk
UseoForce replied to Densetsu Bushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Of course you weren't competing. Poor choice of words. I was referring to the creation of a boundless "anti-style" (no better word) designed specifically for realistic fighting. Most of the things that you say that I agree with are straight from JKD, but I assume you know that from reading the Tao of JKD. The part I don't understand is when you say "a punch is a punch and a kick is a kick." So what? What am I supposed to get from that? If you are saying (so to speak) "A jab by any other name stings as much" then yes, I agree with that too. But then, that's not exactly an original idea either. -
Leg attacks
UseoForce replied to KUNTA KINTE's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
But if you continually applied footlocks with success (I'm not saying you should) your training partners would learn how to defend against them, and thats what its all about: Learning. I do agree that footlocks should not be the only attack you ever use. They should be part of a well-rounded arsenal. -
What was the extent of your hand-to-hand/unarmed/bayonet/close combat training in basic training? Did you receive any hand-to-hand instruction afterward from the military? I'd appreciate it if you could also tell me what branch of service and when you went through basic training. Finally, thank you for your service to our country.

If you haven't read Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune Do yet DO IT! It will open your eyes and make you look at martial arts in a totally different light. Don't get caught up looking at the sketches or trying to learn techniques from it. Look at the big picture and try to understand the principles. Trust me, you'll be happy you did.

Should I try to post this in the boxing forum? Maybe they would know. Maybe a sensei would move it for me?

High kicks, high risk
UseoForce replied to Densetsu Bushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
M_A said: This does not mean that what I may do to address a certain problem does not resemble the technique of a system or style. More often than not a punch is a punch and kick is a kick; give what name you will to them. Though, it has been my experience that there are more prudent ways of execution and application than others. sounds like JKD, sry, Bruce Lee beat you to it! -

I'm not saying foot locks are good or bad. I'm saying if a submission is open, go for it! -

I'll go back to my old motto: If it works for you, use it. I can kick you in the head, with some force too, but I am certainly not going to use that as my primary attack strategy.I not THAT good at them. My instructor, on the other hand, is an excellent high kicker, and can kick faster than I can punch. Who am I to tell him that he should not use those high kicks? Of course, that doesn't mean that just because he's good at high kicks that he must use that in self-defense. There is no "high kicks are good" or "high kicks are bad." There is only what works in a given situation, i.e. the UFC situation given by one of the other posters. There is no reason not to have high kicks in your arsenal, so if you need them, they're there. High kicks will porbably never be my strength, but I will continue to train them in case I ever need them. Like a spare tire on your car, you may never use it, but if you need it, you need to know how to change a flat. -
How did you get started in martial arts?
UseoForce replied to BJJ is 1's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, a lot of you will hate this, but... It started with military interest that gradually shifted to combat interest which in turn shifted to an interest in hand-to-hand combat. I devoured any info I could find on the net, and bought two books: Judo, by Jimmy Pedro, and The Complete Idiot's guide to Kickboxing (They are two of my treasured favorities of a collection that now numbers about 30 MA books). Then I bought a Black Belt Magezine, and read about this magical thing called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. All the best fighters did it! As soon as I could I tried to locate a BJJ school. I was frustrated by the lack of variety of MA in my area. TSD was about the only option. Then I stumbled across Combat Hapkido. Omg, elements of not only Hapkido but Judo, Wing Chun, modern combatives, boxing, and, to my liking, a lot of BJJ! You can't tear me away from that school now! -
Dangerous? Maybe. Nuisance? Certainly! I guess its just my incredible striking power. I'm surprised this hasn't happened to anyone else. Its Everlast equipment. That's supposed to be quality stuff, rihgt?

Leg attacks
UseoForce replied to KUNTA KINTE's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
That's ridiculous. A submission is a submission. I don't care if you twist the guy's finger. If it makes him tap, then it is a good submission. Tell your friend I agree with him. -

I've heard sometimes people boo leg locks as cheap shots in BJJ competition. -

Does the metal swivel hardware at the top of your chain wear away quickly? Does your chain wear excessively at all? I've only had my bag for about six months, and in one or two more workouts, the metal hook that the swivel of my bag hangs on will have worn completely through the swivel. Not only will I have to replace this hardware, but very very tiny metal shavings cover the top of my bag, and gets on my hands. The shavings are so small that its almost like having an ink stain, and it is hard to remove. Does anyone else have this problem, and what can I do about it?

racism in the martial arts
UseoForce replied to blaze78_9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I don't think you'll ever find racism in my school. When you're on the mat fighting tooth and claw for that armbar, race is the last thing to think about. My school isn't traditional, but we all respect eachother. We all know what everyone else is capable of. I've never even seen an argument in my school (Knock on wood) -
Do you know where to find one of these on-line, or just a website that has a big list? I crave knowledge about the martial arts. I don't care what "style" or "art" it is, because NO style is perfect and EVERY style has something to offer. Please, if anyone can help.

Thanks for the replies. I found a whey protein drink I think will work.

Striking in Judo

Comparable to JJJ striking, or did Kano have a different take on the striking?
