Well, that probably has more to do with the prohibition of swords in MMA (I know, crazy rule) than the effectiveness of fencing. But if you think fencing is irrelevant as a martial art, that's just dead wrong. I could go on and explain my point, or I could just send you to arma.com JKD has an enormous fencing influence, btw.

Defenses against mount.

But I wouldn't eliminate it completly either. Just be careful. -

Defenses against mount.
UseoForce replied to Enviroman's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The key is doing it well once instead of bridging haphazardly over and over. Get a good grip, make sure his/her base is low enough, then go for it. Tip: Keep your elbows tucked in to your sides, and they will prevent your opponent from coming up high and tight, where it is much harder to bridge him from. -

look up "upa" or "bridge escape" online -
MuayThaiboxer, I understand what you're saying. I don't like people taking it easy on me either.

A little history clarification: Daito ryu Jiu-jitsu formed the basis of hapkido and Aikido. Choi Yong Sul merged his jiu-jitsu knowledge with kicking and striking from his native Korea to create. I had a great discussion with an aikidoka who visited my dojang. We got talking about technique, so showed me an example. I'm not sure what the technique is in Japanese, but I recognized it immediately as an "inside out wristlock." The only difference was he performed it in a more forgiving circle while I did it in a more violent, shorter, motion (typical of jiu-jitsu compared to aikido). Both work, I have seen my instructors employ both, and I use both.

whoo victory!!!

At my school, we start out with position grappling. We don't use any submissions, just try to achieve a dominant position. The first time we added submissions, I took the mount, forced my partner to roll over, then finished him with a rear naked choke. Textbook! Yeah, I know the feeling. -
Why belong to any federation at all? BJJ has no governing body, and it's doing well. It also has maintained its integrity without a federation. Won't find many BJJ McDojos!

Sauzin said: "the important thing is that what you know works" Certainly. Sorry, perhaps I should be more specific. Certainly respect should be paramount, but no more so than anywhere else in life. Just be polite . "In my opinion this represents what I consider to be a mass misinterpretation of traditional arts. We don't all sit in rooms training under a certain set of conditions while choosing to ignore the changing reality of fighting in the outside world. In fact I'd say most of us don't. Sure we use kata but we apply them directly to relevant fighting in the real world. Truly traditional arts have always been focused on real world fighting. Not sport rules or dojo rules." If you train this way, great . I could go on, but i'm hungry.

Grappling Dummies
UseoForce replied to McBeth's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
There have been several threads like this. In the end, they are hard to find and extremely expensive. It'd be nice to have around, but I wouldn't shell out the 400-500 bucks most of them cost. If anyone finds a quality, inexpensive dummy, start a thread, please! -
Sry, misprint! I meant before "I" went to a different school, not "they"

You know, this is probably just the hapkido talking, but there were a lot of places in the video where I would have thrown or taken down my opponent. He just kept hitting. Seemed inefficient.
-
Not really sure why I left...it was when I was rather young...I've seen a lot of TSD since then. My dojang has TSD classes as well (Before they were at a different school). I'm much happier with Combat Hapkido.

Sure, back in the day. Dan Severn won with only wrestling. But those days are long gone. -
ninja wisdom
UseoForce replied to fujita san's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
There seems to be a lot of confusion and misconceptions here. Read "Shadowhand" and "Knights of Darkness" by Haha Lung. Excellent info on ninja history, tactics, and fighting techniques. If someone has a specific question, I'll answer it. No, ninja did not use karate. They used a hybrid system called Taijutsu. -
Nice, but all styles have these videos. MT kick boxing instructor? Maybe this is more of a MT/Wing Chun hybrid style. That would be cool. This video depicts a great training methodology. If you trained like this, then Wing chun would be good for self defense. Not that I'm convinced it would be better than Krav or kali. Like I said, instructor and school quality are most important.

A point that must be made: MMA fighters train for a ring with a few rules. Traditional MAists train with rules of ettiquete, restrictions of style, plus any rules put on their sport forms (If there is a sport form). Bruce Lee tried to make this point repeatedly. Style sets great bounds and limitations on the fighter. I'm not bashing traditional martial arts, but I am sick of hearing "They train for the cage." It is the traditional martial artists who are bound by rules, procedures, etc.
