Personally, I don't think it is very good at all. Before I can critique, I need to know your goals, current fitness level, etc...

whats your favourite guard
UseoForce replied to AdamFieldITFTKD's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nothing beats the basic boxing stance, with slight modifications (For NHB or kickboxing, for example) and any minor adjustments for body type, etc. -
It's interesting that western martial arts are completely devoid of forms.

So this hasn't happened to anyone else? Seems to me like it'd be fairly common.

Chuck Liddell's KO power
UseoForce replied to UseoForce's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Anybody can get tapped on a bad day (almost happened to me today...whew!) He can more than hold his own, but that does not mean he is invincible. -
Are you serious? I dunno, try google, but don't get hurt...

YAAYYYY! I gurantee, with patience, fortitude, and guidance, hunting will be a life-changing expierience. The "blood-gore-killing" thing is not what hunting is about. You'll understand what I mean once you get into the woods. Do you have someone to teach you about hunting safely and well?

Tao of Jeet Kune Do

Hey, jedimc, did you notice the aikidokas on the page of "Studies on jiu-jitsu and Judo" (I thinks its called that.) -
Purposely fraying belts is weird. Having said that, frayed belts themselves are cool. A worn belt should be worn as a badge of honor. This is especially true in BJJ circles, where you may be a white belt for a year, then a blue belt for another few...A worn belt is one way to tell the newbs apart from the veterans. Is it a flawless method? No. But it works often

What makes a martial art good for self defense is the training methods. Techniques, as Jigoro Kano, the Gracies, and a slew of other proved, are almost irrelevant. Look at Dan Severn: UFC champ with no training other than wrestling. Wrestling's techniques could hardly be described as "devastating" or "deadly," but its rigorous training methods enabled Mr. Severn to defeat foes from all backgrounds (including karate)

Physical Fitness for MMA

Hey the links are great, but I need a little more help. The crossfit site has tons of videos available for download, but I have a terribly slow connection. What are some of your favorite excersises on there that I wouldn't already know. What DO I know? Mostly the basic traditional weightlifter stuff (bench press variations, curls, etc.) and some unorthodox stuff. What I'm after are the bodyweight excersises you all like best from Crossfit. If there is an excersise that is not bodyweight and you think I don't know it, by all means, reccommend it! Thanks. -
Yes, likely. Hmmm...I just thought of something...Matt Hughes by slam KO? He's done it before, and he'll be ready for Royce's triangles and armbars. Not likely, I know, but I'm sure he's practiced slamming from the guard specifically for this fight. Even if not a KO, what wins? Royce's slamming and submission defense or Royce's ground skill?

I know it might sound like I'm whining, but heres the deal: At least 2 months ago, I was wrestling and one of my lower front teeth was accidently driven to my lower lip. It bled like heck for awhile, then swelled up. The swelling has gone down some, and the coloration of the area has gone from being a dark, blood filled red to the same coloration of the rest of my lip. However, the swelling on the inside of my lower lip remains (though it has gotten better). Is it just full of fluid that I should drain myself? ?

Do you think conditioning will be a factor? Hughes is so POWERFUL. Royce is no slouch, but the "new breed" of fighter as TJS puts it is big into conditioning. I have Royce's SUPERFIT book. There's some good stuff in there...but is he really pushing himself with his physical training? You can do all the greatest workouts in the wrold, but if you don't push yourself, you're not going to get very far. I know this becuase this is how I wasted the first year I ever weight lifted. Pump that iron, Royce! (Or bodyweight or whatever...)

Menjo, were you the one that asked me about the bow? LoL. Full of hypotheticals. Well, it is illegal in my state to hunt with any weapons other than what the state defines as a firearm or bow, so no one hunts with a knife. Even if it was allowed , why...? Is it possible? Well, deer have extremely acute senses and sneaking up on one would be about impossible. However, if there'sone thing you can say about deer it's this: Unpredictable. If the wind is just right and you remain completely silent and you have boat loads of luck, a deer may come very close to you and then, well, do your best! But anyway, its illegal and (like 99.9% of hunters) I HATE poaching, so I would never do it.

No one here hunts? That's weird.

Western martial arts (boxing, wrestling, savate, catch, firearms tactics and so on) never have anything more spiritual about them than following rules or an honor code. They are purely empirical and straightforward. Many (not all) Eastern martial arts are full of complicated mental, moral, and spirtual practices (Stuff like budo, bushido and all that). At the risk of sounding simplistic (I'm really tired right now) why do Eastern martial arts have this and Western do not?

Chuck Liddell's KO power
UseoForce replied to UseoForce's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I've said it over and over... Chuck is an enormously underrated grappler. -
Let me start by letting you know my bias: I am a huge Gracie fan. I was wondering how y'all felt about this. I believe we will see one of two different Royces in May for UFC 60 Royce A: I worked hard on my striking so I can at least protect myself of my feet. I worked on getting a lot stronger, faster, and better conditioned. I understand that, for the first time in my life since UFC 1, I am an underdog. I understand that my opponent, Matt Hughes, will have prepared himself for my submission skills. I have trained harder than ever knowing that Matt is a great fighter and I will need to better than ever before to win. Royce B: Matt is smaller and weaker than opponents I have faced in the past. I haven't really changed my training much. If I could submit big guys like Shamrock or Severn, Hughes will be no problem. I don't need to have good striking skills because ground fighting is superior to stand up and I will finish my opponent on the ground. Takedowns aren't important because I can always pull guard. I don't need to worry about Matt GNPing me because he'll get careless I'll catch him with something. I hope to see someone like Royce A, but what do you think?

Anything. Deer, ducks, upland game, small game, whatever

Negative? The south has a reputation for having very moral, Chritian, and conservative values. I'm all for that. Go Texas!
