  4. Welcome to the forum and im a little new to MA in general is Shaolin Kenpo like a mix of Karate and Shaolin Kung Fu?
  5. Hey Jane_doe welcome to the Forums!
  6. Welcome to the forums!
  7. Thanks for the input you did a great job pointing out some great takedowns. Also see Sam Sirota's match the 160 lber he has some of the greatest takedowns (in that tournament) in my opinion, he did place 6th in the state last year and was seeded 1st at sectionals to move onto states again but things happen and the pressure gets to you.
  8. Hey my only "official marital art" is wrestling, i used to wrestle on the Varsity Tully Highschool team. I would just like to hear a few things about these clips if you want to see my teammates/friends they are Derek Conant at 112 and Sam Sirota at 160 lbs. If it looks like all we do is primarily utilze takedowns thats because thats what we drilled repetitively and thats what we specialize in. I think its great for any MMA and i will take my wrestling skills with me wherever i go. http://www.sectioniiiwrestling.com/Video/New/New.htm ~heres the site....you may have to download them on to your computer the files arent too big. Enjoy and please feel free to comment on them.
  9. Hey! Welcome and enjoy this site, i sure am
  10. Heres a great site with some great tips. Lots of info so have a good read through, this is supposably one of the best/free boxing sites out there. http://www.rossboxing.com/thegym.html
  11. Hmm all i suggest now is some cardio for your endurance but yes that clarifies alot. Gl with your training.
  12. But can they not be used to repel blades? If they are iron rings it seems they can be used as forearm sheilds but thats just me and that was just a movie.
  13. I agree with Aodhan. Start with low reps and progressively build up and your body will have no problem keeping up. If you are going to do the 500 knee pushups chances are you wont be able to do them all at once or maybe even in a single day right away, this can be self defeating, thats why building yourself up i.e. from 100 a day then progressively to 150 then 200 etc.... you may have a little more luck. Great additude though you will get to your goals so long as you stick to it.
  14. Whoops, maybe i should have gone here first out of all things but i was really excited to be a part of this forum and wanted to dive right in. Ok, hello everyone my name is Peter and im from Tully New York. im 18 and i absolutely love the martial arts. Although i never was able to officially learn any form of martial arts until my junior year in high school (wrestling) i train on my own. My parents dont really support it but its my passion, ever since i was younger. I hope to you use the info i receive here to increase my martial arts training.
  15. You could always ask your instructor. He/She could always give you advice on what the problem is and then suggest you go to a medical source if its that serious. Either way dont stretch it if sharp pains occur. I had the exact same feeling you did, and it was in my right groin area i never got it checked out and it eventually went away. In the meantime i didnt stretch it so try to lay off groin stretches that target your pain.
  16. I live in Tully New York which is 20+ from SY. I do not practice any sort of MA, and i dont think Wrestling counts. However i am training on my own, sorta educating myself, until i can join a dojo. I plan on going with a few friends to a dojo in Lafayette in the summer, its an unofficial thing that is starting up so it should be fun.
  17. Basically a wrestler's bridge is used to get one off his back, to avoid being pinned and giving the opponent points. Wrestler's bridge: 1.Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. 2.Place your palms on the floor next to your head and raise your body up onto your hands and feet. some pictures off the net. http://images.google.com/images?q=wrestlers%20bridge&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wi
  18. Just a little pointer, remember it is just stretching, so dont use full power on your dynamic stretches. Let them swing freely to an extent to feel the stretch.
  19. yea, ill take ur word for it but looks nothin like him
  20. Yes he is dead, but he very well could have broken a few records with the speed of his punches and kicks, and taken a few contests aswell. I dont believe people are making reference to Bruce Lee in this thread to prove he was the best, and neither am i. There is no doubt he was highly skilled, and is/was a major influence on Martial Arts all around the world. He was a philosopher on the side as many fail to recognize, and his goal wasnt to break records and be "the best". Most of his views and philosophies show that he wants to be the best he can be, and wanted people to truly understand the concepts of martial arts, the whole self interpretation, and "ultimate self expression". On the other hand im sure he won a few tournaments and proved a few things, i wouldnt know because i havent read all of his books, but he did help to prove that a Jeet kune do punch is in fact stronger and more ravaging then a karate punch. Scientific experiments were conducted by Hayward Nishioka and the conclusions were made. (look it up for additional info, if you wish)
  21. Congrats, and have fun learning your new techniques, Hogosha, and Thruhiker, howd you do that (i hope someone else does it and says like this...j/k)
  22. Im pretty sure most of us see Steven Chow's, Kung Fu Hustle more then just a slap stick kung fu comedy. For those who do not, i would just like to say that it has a deeper meaning in many ways. The following link has a review of the movie and some of the symbolism that go with it http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/comments/matthill/2005/05/kung-fu-hustle.html (BEWARE THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN IT) (*cough SPOILERS) please read over this and tell me what you think, i will try to back it up as much as i can, but i just want to clear up the fact that its not just a shallow comedic kung fu movie produced for pure entertainment. It has deeper meanings, and is made the way it is to not only entertain but to enlighten.
  23. No i havent seen it yet, but i have seen a 13 minute clip of it from https://www.bilang.com its basically 13 minutes of pure action and stunt work, either way it looks to be a non stop action filled movie with genuine stunts. P.S. i didnt know Tony Jaa was in it....let me have a look see at the clip again.
