You can be nice and still get what you want... Nice doesn't mean: 1. quiet 2. super-passive 3. martyr-like 4. forbidden to stand up for onself against not-so-nice people 5. naive, gullible As far as "nice guys not getting the girl"... You can be nice. Just make sure that you establish that you're INTERESTED, in more than a buddy-buddy friendship. If you're too slow, and just nice at first, she'll probably never think of you as anything more than a friend. It's possible, but not if someone gets to her first. [/$0.02]

Black Belt Magazine?
monkeygirl replied to GhostlySykanRyu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
BB is good for an article or two every now and then...maybe to pick up a move or two. I have problems with things like their habit of advertising "Bloussant" (breast enhancement pills). -
Good motto, Do you think that just thinking positively can get you through illness better / in addition to illness? Bruce Lee was paralysed while he created JKD and doctors douted he would walk again, do you think that he would have recouvered without his determination? That's not really the way I think about it...although I do find the whole "it's all in your head" form of medicine is kind of interesting. I'm not sure people can make themselves get better just by thinking about it, but I definitely think you can make yourself get sick faster by assuming you are already sick. Anyway, that doesn't have much to do with my philosophy. Let me give you an example. I had to leave my dojo of 4 years. I loved the place and was really upset about leaving, and it took me awhile to get over it...but if I hadn't left, I never would have enrolled in the elite private school I now attend. If I hadn't enrolled, I never would have even thought of applying to some of the colleges that I've already been accepted to. So even though something may seem like the end of your world at first, eventually you will probably find that it was for the best. I find it gives me a lot of courage when I'm "down in the dumps". When you have hope that it will all be all right, there's not much reason to hang your head and mope all the time.

I thought it was pretty good, and I have the strange urge to watch it over and over again. And yes, extremely quotable. "There's like a buttload of gangs at this school. This one gang kept trying to get me to join 'cause I'm pretty good with a bo staff."

If you want to link us to your song, put it up on a personal website first...KF doesn't host those kinds of things. Then give us a link. However, I would suggest condensing the file size first. If you can, convert it to a different file type! .wav is one of the biggest sound file types out there.

The problem is that we need 3 extra lines. From Cingular, you have to have a $59.99/month plan to add an extra line for $9.99/month...that adds up to $100, basically. For a $40/month plan, extra lines are $20/month=$100/month. We can get free phones though, it seems like.

You're practicing in the kitchen with your nunchaku while you're sick. You probably shouldn't be up, but you're dedicated. You flip the chuk over your right shoulder, but forget to trap it with your left hand. As a result, the chuk swings around your shoulder, through your armpit and smacks you in the eye at full speed, causing you to tear up a little. Luckily they were foam! I did that when I was first learning my second chuk kata...I came down with a cold but didn't want to forget the kata, so I practiced

I just sort of have a philosophy...not sure I can condense it into a motto, but basically: Everything happens for a reason. When one door closes, another one opens somewhere eventually, so keep your head up and ride out the storm. That's basically what's gotten me through life. A lot of things happened that I wished never had at the time, but they really worked out for the best later.

I'm particular to Easter, myself. Christmas is nice, but it's basically a holiday based on presents (to the commercial world), and it loses its luster after awhile. It's hard to get excited anymore, even being religious as I am. I like Easter because of my religion, the time of the year (beautiful weather in these parts), and the fact that it's close to my birthday. April is my favorite month

We're trying to get a family deal, but it's really tough to find anything under $100/month right now. Any tips?

Well, if we're going on looks alone... I've always found myself attracted to the tall dark and handsome type. Specifically, dark hair, tan skin, and rugged good looks..hehe. I don't really care about eye color. 6' is a nice height...but I'm 5'2" so anything is tall compared to me. Funny, though...the person I care the most about has dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, and isn't much taller than me...and is actually a bit younger, which feels weird.

I'm going to move this to the Weapons forum. All Weapons discussion goes there.

Shorinryu has the right idea about asking your Sensei. If your dojo sells uniforms, most brands come with a white belt packed right in the uniform. Or you could use that as an excuse to buy yourself a new uniform

You don't even wanna KNOW how my old instructor says that...I'll admit I said it too because I didn't know anything else, but now that I've seen what it's supposed to be...but then what do you expect when it's being super-americanized by people living in a pretty redneck area (myself included) every time we had to bow: "Cheerio Chung-Jee!!" I tried to emulate the guy that got his blackbelt in Korea, who said "Chur-yuk, Kyung-nyet" or something like that. Sorry if I'm confusing commands...that's basically what we said for everything.

Not a master, but a 1st dan. I think that some natural athleticism is helpful in the execution of martial arts techniques...however, most martial arts are a very different kind of mental exercise than most sports...to make a fairly broad generalization. Many good athletes will excel in martial arts...but unathletic individuals can also excel. Perhaps more slowly in the physical aspect, but perhaps faster in the mental. I think what is wonderful about martial arts is that no matter where you start from, if you work hard enough you can become very skilled. Personally--and I feel like a big egotist saying this, but hey--I guess you could say I was very naturally talented. The materials came very easily to me and I performed them very well. I would consider myself moderately athletic. I don't really play other sports other than pickup games, but I'm not too shabby at those.

What do you do when.......

I moved this to the General MA section. You may want to check out some other threads about dating in-school...they present a lot of the pros and cons of relationships between students. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2809 -
At my school, one of the clubs sells bags of candy that students can send to each other through the school mail (every student has their own mailbox). I got a bag...but it was from my dorm dean! It was sweet of her and I appreciated it, but it's not the same as getting one from a guy. Then again, most of the guys here kinda suck at being anything but friends. So, I was alone for Valentine's Day in every romantic sense. I really don't mind being single that much anymore. I'm really busy and don't even think about it...but the V-Day just sort of shoves my inability to get a date in my face and rubs it in nice and deep. Especially when my Spanish teacher asked in class that day: "Quien no tiene un novio o novia?" ... "who doesn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend?". And then proceeded to try to match me up with this other kid in the class. *sigh* I think I win for most dysfunctional Valentine's Day story...so far that is.

Yeah homeschooling! I was homeschooled for 10 years, then came to a private school for my last two years. My mom got a job on campus and I got free tuition. Now it's finally here...senior year, baby! I've been accepted to one college and am waiting to hear from two others. I'll most likely study economics. College aside, I can't wait for summer...so I can get a job to pay for college...

Well...I've never heard of these being GREEN, but maybe it's just the way the fabric reacts. Anyway, the armpits of white t-shirts turn yellow not directly because of the sweat, but because of the dryer, which burns the sweat and causes the fabric to turn yellow (or possibly green in your case). Solution: spray the pits of your clothes (and other sweaty areas) with a stain remover before you wash them. Apparently regular detergent doesn't quite do the job of getting all that pit-sweat out. Once the "burns" are there, however, I don't think there's much you can do to get them out again. There might be a few products on the market that claim to fix them, but I'm not familiar with those, and therefore can't comment. As for the sweaty attractiveness thing...I've heard of that too, but it had nothing to do with "ugly" vs. "hot" men. I think it was on the discovery channel or the local news or something fairly reliable. It was a study, where several different women (5 or so) were presented with several samples of male sweat. Each woman took turns smelling the little vials...I don't remember if they were told it was sweat or not. Anyway, the women all had different reactions to the sweat. For a single sample, some said it smelled terrible, some said they couldn't smell anything at all, and some said it smelled wonderful...even reminded them of other scents which triggered happy memories. Now remember, every woman smelled the same sweat as the others, but reacted differently to the scent. I think they did some other tests into genes, etc. and found that the women who had positive reactions to the sweat smell were more likely to bear healthy children with the owner of that sweat. If they had a bad reaction, the two were not likely to have healthy pregnancies/children. Therefore, if a woman liked the way you smell when you sweat, you were meant to be together or something. At least, you'd be a good match. I'm pretty sure I've seen this on some online scientific journals, too. However, this still doesn't constitute reason to not wear cologne/perfume, because there will always be those women (and men!) who smell nasty things coming from you!

It seems to have calmed down quite a bit now. Still not sure what happened, but if it crops up again I'll get it checked out. Thanks for your support and information.

I went to the gym on Friday and did some leg curls. Thursday was the first time I had done them in a while, because they always made my knee click. This time, I've found that by pointing my toes, the clicking stops/lessens. I experienced no pain doing the curls, but on Saturday I started to feel knee pain. I'm not sure if that is the cause, or doing kata outside in the cold on Saturday. However, I have also been kicking in cold weather, so that's not unusual. Didn't experience pain then, either. My right knee on the outside tendon is very sore and it hurts to move it at all, especially to extend it. There is nothing visibly different about my knee, although it feels slightly swollen. It's been hurting for a day and a half now, no improvement. I was wondering if maybe anybody knew what was going on or if the description of pain sounded familiar. Thanks!

I'm going to pat myself on the back for this one!

Congrats!! My mom tried quitting smoking a few times but could never do it, until she started having breathing problems. I guess that was the motivation she finally needed. Just from seeing how hard it was for her, you should really be proud of yourself! -

You can also use a stud finder. I think it works on the same theory as the knocking method, basically. Some walls are too thick for knocking though, and that's where the finders come in. My house has pretty thin walls, so the knocking method works very well. I would try that first just so you don't have to buy a stud finder (if you don't already own one). They're pretty cheap I think, but if you don't need one, then hey.
