I've done both ITF and WTF, nearly 2 years of WTF and nearly 10years of ITF the thing you realise most is how narrow minded each style is of the other. Making the transition from WTF to ITF you'll learn to punch and keep a nice high tight guard to stop you face getting punched. ITF to WTF you'll learn you need to be more fitter, quicker and powerful. Do them both it's great just respect your instructors and learn. Bretty

Hi all, (wasn't sure where to post this but i'm sure it will be moved accordingly) In the film Dragon: the Bruce Lee story. Just before Bruce Lee was about to fight on of the guys he does this thing where he cracks all his joints. (i know the whole film was a massive dramatisation with lots of made up bits but..) 1) did all of Bruces joints really crack? 2)what caused that, it can't be good for you? 3)is it a sign your wearing your joints out? PS i suffer from ligament hyperlaxity syndrom which means my whole body dislocates and clicks. just interested. Have seen a physio and they were no help. I am back after a great week

Just out of curiosity, what sort of things were you showing them? I'm not being funny but i could understand them being Negative to Kata, i would have thought they would want something like JKD or Krav Maga. something quick, simple to learn and effective. I'm really not being funny or questioning the importance of kata, just really interested in what aspects you teach them? Pressure points? Bretty -

Cool! I love reading about the SAS i think the level at which they train is truely amazing so mentally and physically elite. Very inspiring!! Were you teaching them Karate? Bretty -
It's gotta be Kickboxer! Okay just kidding, I was gonna say my favourite MA film of all time is Armour of god 1. But thats more for the stunts then the Martial arts. I just love Jackie Chan!!! My favourite onscreen fighter (uh-oh controversy alert) is Brandon Lee in Rapid fire, just showing how effective JKD is in real fights, low kicks and bad ass punching!! Favourit fight seen, Jackie chan versus that guy with the amazing legs at the end of Who am I (tho i was dissappointed when i saw the making of it). I just love kickers!! Sorry wouldn't like to say which i thought was the best film of all time as I haven't seen any Jet Lee films or many of the other 'classics' Bretty [ This Message was edited by: Bretty101 on 2002-02-24 13:28 ]

It's yellow fever! the effects of adrenaline effect people in very different ways. You felt sick coz your body was preparing you for FIGHT or FLIGHT. Basically Adrenaline will give you tunnel vision and a higher threshold to pain as well as a massive increase in strength this is you body preparing for a fight. You feel sick (and possibly stain your trousers) as you body tries to loose weight so you can run away more quickly, and boy can it make you run fast. It's not something you'll ever overcome tho you can learn to control it through experience and the best way i've found to do this is tournament fighting. It's good to get in a real fight now and again it sure does make you appreciate how sickeningly violent fighting is and how unrelated it is to your training (don't anyone tell me you can recreate this in the dojo :wink). Many a time real fights have caused me to questioned my training. I've read some really interesting stuff on adrenaline by a Engish bloke called Geoff Thompson, Fear the friend of exceptional people. Tells you how to use adrenaline switches to your advantage and against your opponent. It's very interesting! The more you experience adrenaline the more you recognise the signs a lot of people think it is fear but it is not!! Bretty [ This Message was edited by: Bretty101 on 2002-02-24 03:47 ]

Sine wave patterns
Bretty101 replied to Bretty101's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yeah i understand your centre of gravity moves up and down like a sine-wave. We all do that a bit right?! Well if i'm honest, i think the bouncing thing is pants. I'd hoped someone would prove me other wize. I take it that no one here does sine wave? Bretty -
Sine wave patterns
Bretty101 replied to Bretty101's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I kinda agree with all of you, tho i don't really understand the sine wave thing. I think along the lines of how we power test all our techniques by breaking a brick with them. Now i wouldn't use the sine wave to break a brick just straight line power and speed, but then isn't that just showing my ignorance. I'd hoped there would be some people who understand it so they could (try and) make me understand it. I'm very open minded but coming from a strong physics back ground i don't really understand it. Also having seen the power and solidness that Karate practitioners generate in their katas i try and imitate this. Bretty -
Hi all, Just out of interest which of you do your patterns sine wave style and which of you do them the more solid Karate Fashion? (if you know what i mean?) I do mine the more solid way because i don't think anyone has ever explained the idea of sine wave to me before. What are you thoughts? Bretty

Okay guys i got it! (been doing some reading) This was the answer i was looking for: Dynamic stretchs are motion through full muscle range. and bouncing is motion in the stretching phase. Hence the muscle does not actually relax when bouncing and actuall tightens to prevent injury. bouncing bad, dynamic stretching good! Cheers guys Bretty

Hi all, Thanks for the replies, I kind of agree with what you saying. But by definition with respect to the muscle what is actually happening? ie: Dynamic stretching, rapidly stretching the muscle til it reaches it's limit and reflex contraction occurs. Doesn't this happen when you bounce? Don't get me wrong, i'm not really arguing, i think bouncing is very bad and always advocate controlled stable strecthing, but purely by definition don't they have the same effect on your muscles? Is it the Jerking which is bad? Sorry for asking lots of questions, but it appears you have the answers and i am interested. Tho i can already do the splits etc, Thank you Bretty

Hi all, I'm new here and shouting from across the pond (UK) So i hope you can all hear me? Anyway got a question for you all and would be interested in your replies... A friend of mine recommends if in a fight situation to put your chin on your chest (ie tip your head right forward). because if your opponent was to punch or headbut you he'd hit your forehead. And as it's very hard he's very likely to injure himself and not you. Okay I'M NOT INTERESTED IN PROTECTING THE CHIN ETC. JUST INTERESTED IN HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING STRUCK ON THE FOREHEAD? (don't mean to shout but can't work out how to do bold) I understand you have several nerves (pressure points) on the top of your forehead which can knock you out. (try gentley slapping yourself with your palm on the the top corner of your head and it makes your eyes go funny) I'd consider this part of my head vulnerable. What do you think? good or bad advice? Bretty

Okay guys heres a question for you... People tell you it is bad to bounce when stretching, but isn't it just dynamic stretching? Bretty ?? [ This Message was edited by: Bretty101 on 2002-02-15 05:06 ]
