Effective Hook kick
Bretty101 replied to TKD_McGee's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Just practice on a kicking shield or bag, you'll know when you've got it you'll get a nice thud, thats all you need and right on the line, it's just a case of cooordination and well the hardest bit is accuracy. Give it a good dig and don't lock your leg out, bend it into the boards. Do you have people holding the boards or do you use a holder? Bretty -
I love those kicks kinda combine the power of a rear leg kick with the speed of a lead leg kick, cool!! and an excellent variation. But being an ITF fighter i don't like rear kicks/turning my body square on coz it give the opponent a bigger scoring zone, points fighter you see I disagree shoulders telegraph everything you can't ...do anything without moving your shoulders first. I love what was said above about not confining yourself to a certain style i believe tho a round kick is a round kick it can be through a hundred different ways from a hundred different angles, never throw the same kick twice Bretty me

I guess thats where the term 'Shin dig' comes from. Bretty

Totally agree power in the kick is stored in the hips, thats you centre of gravity blah blah blah anyway. Fought some guy last night who was some freestyle TKD bloke. He leans way back on all his kicks and i couldn't do any thing with him. Hmm very interesting tho. Will perservere and look for weakness Bretty

I kinda meant throwing it with the shoulder first. I'd say this is where the originating power comes from then down into your hips and out through your foot. Try standing on one leg and pivoting around just using your foot, feels like your knees gonna explode! (watch anyone spar the first part of their body to move before any technique is there rear shoulder, uh-oh secrets out.) Bretty

Bretty101 replied to Bretty101's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts

I'm an upright kicker, My thai boxing teacher said it was bad coz it gave him a target. but i do it so i can punch and recover quicker. I also find it a lot quicker to kick with just my leg then my whole body so i don't really 'throw' my kicks. Bretty
-
Lean back or upright? So when you lot kick do you stay upright or lean back? do you vary between Self defence and Sparring and how do you vary this between different kicks and kick heights? Some people recommend leaning back when you kick so you can't be hit. Other recommend leaning forward so you can punch and kick at the same time and recover quicker from your kicks. Your opinions please? Bretty

Didn't anyone see the last Tyson fight? Also Tyson doesn't want to fight Lewis, thats why he's trying so hard not to get a license. ie fighting at press conferences. It will never happen. I don't question Lewis' chin but i don't think he is an inside fighter, he struggled with Holyfield in close, but then Tyson isn't the fighter we used to know. Bretty

I'd love to throw a head kick in a fight, big round house, shin to chin and watch em fall. I've noticed when you get beginners come to the club who have never done a martial arts before wouldn't even know how to block it or expect it. jab cross rear leg round house, the best combination in the world. watch 'em fall!!! Mind you i find people even with or without any martial arts training in a real fight tend to fall into the instinctive head down and flail style of fighting making it hard to hit the head. so it's dificult. i say line them up with a couple of punches first then a thigh kick then catch them off balance with the chin hot. beautiful!! Or maybe just throw a big axe kick and watch it come down and cave in there head. most people would look up at it as it comes down onto there face. Can MA be used against other species?
Bretty101 replied to KickChick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The more modern martial arts used by the military has defences against dog attacks. I was reading an article last year about this. 1) ie dog bites your arm punch it square on the nose. apparently they don't like it 2) dogs have a weak sturnum. Grab both front legs and pull apart. kills dog. Mail man martial arts! Bretty -
Twist kick, help!!
Bretty101 replied to Bretty101's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Not heated discussion at all. i don't want to argue if it's a good kick or not it's taekwondo so i want to be able to do it but can't please help any one. I've done TKD for nine and a half years and my twist kick isn't getting anywhere need help but not sure what stretches to do without damaging knees etc. I can already do the splits front to back and side splits but i think it's a different stretch i need. Is it something you can either do or you can't? Please don't sit back and help us, Fanx Bretty -

Love the 540 people are always amazed and can never comprehend what you just did . Or the hook/axe hybrid. just land it on their face as there look up in it's shadow :uhoh . SMASH!! Bretty -
I wrap between my fingers. It makes your whole hand so much more solider. If you wrap each finger in turn form the thumb side then the middle 2 from the non thumb side. it stops all you knuckles spreading and pulling the muscles inbetween them, then wrap around the whole lot twice then make a fist and go once just over lapping the knuckles then back around the wrist to finish. If you do it properly you should be able to punch pretty much anything and not hurt your hand. Solid. I find handwraps are a must and always break my hand whenever i fight without em. Bretty

How do i tie my taekwondo belt
Bretty101 replied to MrDash's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I tie my belt so it lays right on top of itself all the way round. Hold one end on your middle at required length. With other end go round twice right on top. then underneath the whole belt and tie right over left. Confused!!!..ask you instructor. So does every one elses belt go around twice? one guy i train with from malaysia has a one-round belt. Any one else got one of those? I spoke to a Ju-jutsu bloke the other day and said he'd tied his belt badly cos of the cross at the back. He said only senior students were allowed to tie it without the cross and that it supported the back?! Interesting I thought one continuos loop with left over right/ right over left knot. Symbolised infinity like the learning of a martial arts there is no end. Dribble, Bretty -

common mistakes in sparring
Bretty101 replied to CTpizzaboy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My biggest mistake is weighing 220lbs and fighting like a 140lb-er. I fight really controlled and flicky cos i always fight lower grades all the time, Do you know how hard it is to pull axe kicks and hook kicks and spinning kicks when your as heavy as me? It's hard work. and the trouble is i get to a tournament dance around and fight really light and wonder why i'm dying after the first minute. Bretty -
Talking about words of advice and learning things the hard way. I sprained my ankle the other week, swelled up all big and hurted loads. just kept using it like an idiot and started training again to soon and did the same again verypainful. This time read up on th subject using www. You know i didn't realise the importance of RICE. I thought it was a myth Using Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation i am now completely recovered 2 weeks later. when before after 3 weeks it was still swollen and painful. I learnt my lesson!! as soon as you injure yourself quick as you can Elevate it, strap it up and put ice on it for 20 minute of every hour for the next 3 hours. Then rest it. This will disperse the swelling so much quicker and you foot will recover so much quicker. RICE is very important after injury, lesson learnt Bretty
