Who Feels Could Defend Against a Knife Attack?
Bretty101 replied to Iron Arahat's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Being mugged with syringes and knives is quite common where i live. If someone pulls either on me they can have what ever they want!!! It's not worth it. We play about with rubber knives and marker pens when training and you always get 'caught'. If you can survive that i guess you could probabley over power someone. Bretty -

axe kick
Bretty101 replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
AXE KICKS i love 'em. I do them all the time knock out after knock out. :brow: My trick is not to throw it stationary. Throw it up really high when your just out of range of your opponent. Then when its vertical do a big hop with you standing leg so your in range and drive it down onto their face. Lovely! obviously i can do this a bit quicker then two sentences and the amount of people who see this big kick and thinking they are well out of range just freeze and look up at it as it's coming down. Also with your leg between you and them it also covers your body. (mind you watch out for the sweep or the strike to the groin) :weirdlook: And my favourite follow up which always gets the crowd going. Is a big axe kick followed by a reverse roundhouse off my other leg. then stick a blitz on the end, sweet! I've also got a nice hook kick and a hook/axe hybrid kick. And just when people start wising up to it i fake it high and then dig low with a big side kick. Bretty ---------------------------------------------------- they can't sweep what they can't see - lead in with the hands!! -
Interesting i never though of it like that. Bretty

Hi all, I was just flicking through a MA magazine and saw this guy in a karate style suit (dunno wot style he was). He was wearing a white suit and what appeared to be a whitebelt. Anyway on closer inspection it appears to be a really worn out black belt!!! I always thought that the suit should be cleaned and pressed and in it's best condition for training does that not apply to belts? coz i thought it looked a bit untidy. Are there rules which say you can't buy a new Black belt? Bretty

 I'm happy to fight boxer with my legs i find there amazing movement (ducking and weaving) tends to only move their head and i can get some good kicks to the midsection. If i can't kick all i ever do is jab, jab, jab-jab and jab oh and sometimes i do jabs. See i'm a tall guy with a big reach and poor boxing skills. Bretty

eyes
Bretty101 replied to Lau gar's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Mainly their rear shoulder as it's usually the first thing to move before they do any technique. sometimes do some obvious glances at the knot of there belt and then throw a big low fake kick to it before a good kick to the head. Or rarely at their eyes. Bretty EDIT: I also look at the knot of their belt sometimes as it is where their centre of gravity is, which gives you a true idea of how close someone is. People leaning towards or away from you can be deceptive. Another on is their feet. You can spot straight away if your up against a karate-ka, kick boxer, boxer or TKD straight away by their foot work. I guess peropheral vision is what you want. I think a good analogy of point sparring to full contact sparring is comparing amateur boxing to professional boxing. In amateur boxing the emphasis is on points in pro boxing the emphasis is on knock out. Does that mean an amateur boxer can't box? can't knock someone out? In point sparring the emphasis is on points not knock out, but we still knock each other out. I've seen some cracking knockouts in point sparring got a video of my friend putting his nose back into place and then start sparring again. People only get disqualified if doing swinging punches or uncontrolled moves. This is something else, i've seen peopple get TKO'd in points sparring given 30 seconds to recover and get back up and carry on fighting. Thats not allowed in full contact!!! (admittedly you don't get 30 seconds in a real fight maye theres the difference!) Bretty [ This Message was edited by: Bretty101 on 2002-05-10 03:52 ]

I'm a points fighter and regularly knock people out and break peoples ribs. Can i not really fight? The trick is to be relaxed and make it look semi-contact. I'm always surprised when boxers get knocked out with punches which seem like nothing! How much force is needed to knock someone out? or for an effective solar plexus shot? Speed and accuracy!! Alright bud, Whaasssssup!! I like a bit of an ache it shows i've had a good work out but it's not always a good sign... Soreness is usually due to a poor warm up or warm down. That or your just overdoing it. I like to walk (if i can) away from one lesson a week aching but not every lesson your body needs to recover! Aches are usually caused by minor strains (damage) to the muscle, this can be reduced with a good warm up and will need time to repair stronger. Aches are also caused by lactic acid left in the muscle by the 'burning' of sugars. this should be 'flushed' out with a good warm down or stretch! Back trouble is very common in martial arts. I propose this is due to imbalanced excerise have a look at the thread "Martial arts bad for you...." in this forum. Back injuries Go easy on your back!!! Bretty

I meant to go this year but couldn't make it due to other commitments. I went last year tho and was really impressed with the demo's, Espessially the Kwon team and the United Professionals desplay teams!! What was wrong with the TKD demo? I must admit there were some poor ones last year! Bretty

Korean Katas/Patterns
Bretty101 replied to dbalsdon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Erm.. sorry i don't know? It's all in sitting stance and tho your facing the front you move to the sides all hand techniques most on the spot and no kicks apart from one to the knee. It wouldn't surprise me if half our patterns were the same as Shotokan, it seems we stole half their patterns and added a few more kicks Bretty -
I think there is a lot more to pressure points then just press points. They fall into categories of rub points, strike points and press points. Used in COMBINATION they produce varying effects on different people. I've seen people knocked out with what i can only describe as 3 flicks. But accuracy and knowlege is the key and as said not every ones the same. This accuracy is hard to achieve in a brall, clinch or real fight and generally take some prodding about. Bretty

What is the best self-defence martial art?
Bretty101 replied to Eye of the Tiger's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Try Thai boxing, Mention that your experienced in fighting and a hard man. You'll soon realise your quite the opposite and then the learning begins. IMO Thai boxing is the most simple and effective martial art making it ideal for practical self defence. Bretty -
Cool, Like BL's 2finger push up  The nearest i saw to that was the Budist monks doing handstands on their fingers. I've got visions of my finger exploding out of it's socket!! Would you hit someone with a single finger strike? Bretty

Korean Katas/Patterns
Bretty101 replied to dbalsdon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I don't know what the Korean version of Bassai Dai is. But in my style of ITF TKD the hardest pattern i know in terms of difficulty is Moon-moo With very slow high kicks it's prety impossible as it needs loadsa balance and leg strength. The next hardest pattern i'd say is the power pattern Po-eun. Very short powerful moves all in Horse stance. Bretty -
Cool i love this stuff!! Check out Rick Moneymakers Pressure points. Do a search for the dragon society they claim every move has at least 10 different pressure point applications!! this stuff is realy interesting. I've recently realised that the majority of the blocks are actually strikes and locks. The 'fist' which comes to you hip during blocking etc is actually a grab made pretty. This explains why in katas you don't always counter after a block because the block is actually a strike. I love this stuff!! Bretty

Do you cross your legs?
Bretty101 replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I know what you mean, step behind when doing a step through side kick and in front when doing a step through turning kick. Add a bit of a jump/shufflwe and you fly. I think the step through side kick is one of the quickest, safest and most powerful kick. Works a treat sparring even if they block it it'll hurt there arms and push them back. Disguise the step up with a lead arm back first to the head, this also draws the gaurd up as you take out their ribs with the kick!! Cool Bretty -
Can't really speak for Hapkido however in my experience Taekwondo being one of the newer martial arts is not set in it's ways and is an excellent base martial art from which to approach other martial arts. I know many people who once they have reached Black belt level in TKD have gone away and stolen bits of other martial arts then applied them to Taekwondo. Taekwondo has a little bit of everything. and will give you an insight into Kicks, punches, kicks, Grappling, Self defence, kicks, pressure points, locks and kicks. It's also a well known kicking martial art! Don't know how our UK styles of TKD compare to yours. Bretty

pain
Bretty101 replied to dafabe's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
You should have seen what happened to my jaw when i mentioned that he'd never get past all my kicks and punchs and close enough to land an elbow!! I could bite down on one side yet fit my finger in the gap on the other! Now i love Thai boxing the simplest and most effective martial art there is IMO. Very Stupid Bretty ------------------------------------------------------ Sometimes you gotta learn these things the hard way. -
pain
Bretty101 replied to dafabe's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I've done that and it's the most painfull thing i've ever done (i've broken my arm, a leg and dislocated loads of things). Between all my lower ribs on my right side. Was peeing blood for 2 weeks! Hurts when you breath/cough and laugh. and i couldn't sleep for 2 days!!! I was taking pain killers for weeks too. All coz i mentioned to my new Thai boxing instructor that I could beat his Rear leg kicks by doing my faster lead leg kicks...hmmm he was right Now i've got a bit of a complex on my right side and I think my elbow has fallen in love with my hip coz it just doesn't want to move any more!! Speed balls i just can't use 'em. I like hit it once and then have to wait for it to stop before i can hit it again. And those floor-too-sealing balls are even worse they hit back!!! Medicine balls are more my speed! Bretty
