  1. Tae-bo, isn't it just box-ercise with kicks? B
  2. I'm an ITF fighter, The point system is difficult to inforce as you have pointed out and the winner is usually the best fighter (who incidentally will score the most points) We probably play a bit harder then most and i laugh when I hear people say semi contact no power, flicky flicky blah blah blah. It's funny how the best semi contact fighters are usually the hardest hitters. Blah blah blah... Bretty
  3. I would have left out all the pre-fight pushing each other stuff, it just builds adrenaline and makes it harder for you to hurt him. What does pushing achieve? I would have just punched him out, thats no way to speak to a lady! and use open handed strikes, they don't hurt you hand or mark the person you hitting as much, and if hitting to the face i'd aim for the Chin/throat/nose area. and thats about as precise as you can get in a real fight. I hate violence!! Bretty
  4. What a handbag?! I've been hit by a few of them before they hurt!! Bretty
  5. Have you looked at the telescopic nunchaku. They are a lot heavier then conventional chux but compact, and well i wouldn't wanna be hit by any. Bretty
  6. I do that when i instruct intensive kicking lessons. We train in a big sports hall coz there's about 180 of us. First Front kicks the whole length then turning kicks back then side kicks up and hook kicks back then axe kicks... Mind you you get very dizzy on the spinning kicks!! Bretty
  7. I think instead of WTF in the olympics it should be ITF. would be far better for the sport and spectators will go mad for it (4 points jump kick to body, 5 points jump kick to head). Maybe add sweeps go freestyle, then it's open to all, TKD kickboxing anyone. Olypic freestyle hmmm sounds like figure skating Bretty
  8. He's right you know!!! Bretty
  9. Where do i start? Broken leg (roller blading) Broken collar bone/dislocated shoulder (cycling) Broken Nose (times2 sparring) Dislocated jaw (sparring) Broken fingers, dislocated both thumbs (sparring) and the most painful of them all I Bruised my Ribs and kidney sparing a thaiboxer, pee-ing blood for 2 weeks. Now the only trouble i have is my shoulder and jaw often dislocate in my sleep but thats more a joint problem i have. I think it is amazing how the body can regenerate. The land of Arthritis here i come!! Bretty
  10. Hi all, This idea was taken from Yoda's thread on how much the body can take. List all the injuries (tears and breaks) you've ever had and tell us which ones still haunt you? Bretty
  11. You'll always be a black belt in Taekwondo no one will ever take that away from you. I've been with 3 different TKD organisations and they all claim to not recognise each others grades yet they all use to be unified. It's B£"^%"IT! and politics and the down fall of the martial arts world. You'll find it's more down to the instructor then the organisation. so don't worry about it. Most will let you train with them and just make you sign up to the new organisatin (license, membership, etc) and if you want to continue on with the next grade you may have to retake your last one. I'd personally tell them to...i'll go train somewhere else. Official ITF What a joke!!! Bretty
  12. I think it's a question of intensity. Avoid intense weight training, keep it light. Don't look to build muscle but develope all round fitness. When your a growing lad (i'm still growing) your bodies full of testosterone and such stuff (thats about a technical as i get) and it's there to develope your whole body as it grows. I don't think it's a good idea to concentrate that growth onto certain parts of your body as you would by weight training. and better to do all l round fitness work so your body developes as intended. Don't get me wrong i think weight training is great and i've been lifting weights since i was 14. Just keep the intensity down and avoid the obsessive pumping iron mindset till your older. 13. The styles of Taekwondo and karate are pretty much the same but with different emphasis on different aspects. A lot of emphasis is put on jumping and spinning kicks in TKD, but there are just as many flying kicks in each style. Freestyle karate, Karate, Korean karate, Taekwondo. They are all pretty undefined due to evolution and i'm yet to go to two clubs that claim to teach the same style which actually do. Bretty
  14. I always do front kick with the ball of my foot. Unless i'm fighting someone who drops there elbow on all my kicks (elbow block i love it!) in which case i do it the way my Thai boxing instructor showed me using my heel. I'm actually an ITF fighter but no noe has ever told me to front kick with my instep tho i can understand it being a good groin strike. Bretty
  15. Just the man! Can you help us with my twist kick Can't for the life of me do it. Dispite being able to do splits. Need a different stretch but don't know which one. Cheers! Bretty
  16. I'd offer the following advice. 1. get a friend who is as motivated as you. You can get competitive and motivate each other. Or make a bet with a friend that you will achieve something before he does. ie splits or something. Stay competitive and keep it fun. 2. Draw up a realistic plan/routine and stick to it, remember to include rest days and variety. 3. 4 hours every day seems like a bit much. I'd stick to 1-2 hour routines rather then 4 hour. That way it's intense, you won't get bored and you'll probabley get more benefit. Good luck mate and stick at it! Bretty
  17. Okay guys i'm sold on this one. Just order some from the Health Rack. Will let you know how i get on. Cheers Bretty
  18. The only training i've ever done with for knife fighting was an experiment i did with my brothers. one person wears a nice white long sleeve shirt. The other is armed with a marker pen. Without exception the shirt is gonna get ruined!!! Do the 100yd sprint thing! Else like my ex-para flatmate says. "Let them stab you hold the knife there and punch them in the head loads. It takes an average of 7 stabs to kill someone and while he's stabbing you he's not stabbing the rest of your regiment" Okay them  I think i'll stick with the Forrest gump thing Bretty
  19. Is this why no one can tell me how to do a trist kick? Bretty
  20. Hi all, Ligament hyperlaxity- is basically double jointedness. Also called hyper mobility syndrom. This is aparently what i've got. all my joints are over supple. I can dislocate both my shoulders (a common problem amongst sufferers), my knees click, i get slight back pain plus now my wrists and fingers crack. In fact whole body is doomed for arthritis I blame dangerous stretched. So when you stretch make sure 1. your fully warmed up. and 2. your stretching muscles and tendons and not ligaments. Tendons hold muscle to bone, Ligaments hold bones together. Stretching ligaments is very bad, it loosens you joint and makes you very prone to injury. This is why you may have clicking hips where your stretched a ligament. Fortunately i have no trouble with my hips, and have also eliminated the trouble with my back by weight training. Ankle weights and dead lifts. Strengthening all the supporting muscles i found to be very helpful. something the physio mention she noticed i'd done a lot of weight training and said the trouble is you concentrate on major muscle groups and loose balance in your joints by not doing torsional or twisting motions which strengthen the muscles which are right around and inside the joint. aparently this is very important and she stressed that i do very light twisting excercises for my shoulders. Also another thing i've noticed (particularly in tkd) involving antagonistic muscle groups, you do a million sit ups but nothing to strengthen your back and wonder why you get back trouble. Always do press ups and push things away tho never pull things towards you, this incourages your shoulders to slump forward which gives bad posture etc. There are a lot of excercises like this. What does glucosamine do would anyone recommend it for my supple joints? More Qustions then Answers Bretty
  21. Knees, nightmare!!! I have a lot of trouble with my knees. Usually problems from doing TKD, kicking fresh air, asymetric stretching and having ligament hyperlaxity syndrome. My knees also bend a little left and right and i get pain right in the joints if i don't keep the surrounding muscle nice and toned. I've never tried braces but thought about it, they look a little frankenstein to me plus a little expensive. Let s know how you get on with 'em Bretty
  22. Over here in the UK you can get your nose quarterised. They severe the veins or something in your nose so it doesn't bleed any more. They use chemicals or lasers. I know a lot of people who have had it done. It doesn't hurt of effect your sense of smell. Bretty
  23. I thought i read something about Don 'the Dragon' Wilson beating a world ranked bxer when kicking above the belt was allowed. Don't know how true that is but all credit to him if he did. I think boxing is one of the over looked aspects of martial arts. Bretty
  24. I believe it's not the colour of the belt which is important or the style but the person or organisation who awards it. They must be willing to put there name to it right?! Bretty
  25. Yeah allow punching to the face throughout the whole fight and ditch the body pads Bretty
