  1. Nothing like a little short notice for a grading to get you fired up!! It's great when you finally decide you want to aim for a gading and your instructor says 'yeah great you've got 3 weeks' :eek: I've change organisation 3 times. I started with a big organisation which then divided and then due to a change of location I found myself part of another breakoff. At the end of the day no matter how much they try and change stuff it all originates from the original ITF so I just do my own thing. 9 lessons to learn Ge baek and Po-eun. Well it's possible they are all great patterns and probably my favourite. Kwang-Gae, Po-eun and Gebaek, or the slow one, the power one and the one that starts off with a twist kick!! I think they are all really cool and the other dan patterns seem a little less exciting after those (with the exception of moon-moo). The best of luck, and i'm sure you'll get them! Bretty

My advice is to change all your training into 3 minute sets (or what ever length rounds your fighting) Training your entire body to work intensively for 3 minutes, then 30 second rest, then 3 minutes etc. Just like fighting rounds. This is the sort of endurance you want and will train your body to recover. Do this for all your pad work, drills and work outs. It'll train your mind to visualise 3 minutes really well too. Bretty

  5. Sorry mate totally missed out the knifehand bit. The block in the picture is twin forearm block. Twin knife hand block would be the same but with open hands. And Knifehand GUARDING block would cover your solar plexus. Sonkal Debbi makki? I think thats right!! I can't really think of any applications for why you use knifehand twin block rather then forearm other then it looks very pretty. Bretty

  7. Are we talking about twin block with one arm as a rising block and the other as a block to the front/side? Like the first move of Won Hyo? San Palmok Makki? Like this pic i just found doing a google search. http://www.reidstkd.com/ref/patterns/wonhyo/wonhyo_1.jpg There are several applications for this move. Exaple 1: A block from 2 attacks, a downward strike and an attack to the side. or Example 2: defense from a bear hug. Cross your arms so they are inside the attackers arms and break into the blocking position (highlights the importance of crossing your arms and doing the whole blocking motion) . If you complete the Won Hyo 3 move combination you can throw you attacker and break their arm. Example 3: Is an armlock. your rising arm twists an attackers grasp upwards as your lead arm locks out their joint. you can effectively hold someone up on tip-toes in pain. Obviously applications won't be quite the same as moves performed in patterns. Fists often represent where you may ba grabbing someone or applying an arm lock etc. Thes moves are made to look pretty in forms. Bretty [ This Message was edited by: Bretty101 on 2002-07-07 16:12 ]
  8. Spin backfist oh no don't like them!! :eek: I think it's a bit of a chicken move, when you can't take being hit in the face you just show them the back of your head and throw your arm round. I think they are dangerous (though very effective) for several reasons. You not looking at what your hitting, You can get hit in the back of the head (very dangerous) or worse kicked in the back, or maybe even catch your opponent with your elbow.   9. It sounds like the sting is from slapping the bag with the top of your foot. This isn't gonna go away. For kicks connect more with your shin/instep rather then the top of your foot and toes. Else invest in some foot pads. I've found punching the bag splits my knuckles too. Though the skin does toughen there isn't much point. Use some hand wraps or gloves. Bretty
  10. I think doing tournaments is the best way to experience the effects of Adrenaline which you feel in a real life confrontation. It definately helps prepare you and not mistake adrenaline for fear. But yeah I agree tournament fighting isn't street fighting though hopefully it is as close as i'll ever get. Bretty

I think younger martial artists are advantaged in the 3 following ways. 1 SPARE TIME- when you’re a kid you seem to have so much free time, to train or do what ever. 2 ENERGY- I don’t think I ever ran out of energy when I was younger . I could ride a bike forever and play football for days. I don't think I even slouched on the sofa after a stressfull day! 3 ENTHUSIASM- Kids just love it don't they, over excitable with no fear. and what with all the free time and energy to burn off with nothing better to do. I started Martial arts when i was 12 and now I'm 21. A lot bigger and heavier with a lot less free time. I'd love to be a kid again!!!!   12. I think I could mark people from different styles. (I'm a qualified TKD ref :rolleyes: ) You look for people doing unnatural moves and making them look natural and coordinated. (Even students from the same style differ as their instructors teach slightly different variations) You mark on Sharpness. Strenght. Balance and coordination. Take a simple L-stance or Back stance. It's such an unnatural stance with weight distribution the angles of your feet and balance. It takes a beginner years to master. However if someone makes this move look natural and coordinates it with hip motion and arm motion this is what you mark them for!!! This is why you can tell straight away when someone walks into your club if they have done a MA before by their coordination. I suppose if it's an open tournament you've got to be open minded.   15. My current routine starts with a set of 3 maximum weight then a set of 6 lighter then about 12 with less weight... Basically i take each set to failure, lower the weight and go to failure again. this is until i can't even lift the lightest weight or even do the motion without the weight. It's a mental work out and I am putting on loads of bulk (7lbs/week) and noticably getting stronger. I don't know if this is the creatine or my high protein diet but i feel great. Bretty
  16. Stick at it!! Practice thats all it is. The more you stretch the better you get. The key is to relax that is what it is all about. Sit and static stretch in front of the TV or reading a magazine. Forget about your legs and they'll relax. If you think 'pain' they'll tighten. Try stretching out your chin to your toes rather then your face to your knee. This will keep your back straight and improve your stretch. I believe if your an active person anyone can achieve the splits in 3 months. (provided your not pelvically thingy ma-wotsit) Oh and before anyone mentions it.   18. There's not a great deal you can do in 3 months. Don't worry about the fitness or running up a mountain. If you want it enough the adrenaline will get you through it. And besides if your TKD is like mine you'll be tested more on attitude then ability. Courtesy, integrity, perserverence, self control and indomitable spirit!!! Good luck!! Bretty
  19. I started on the creatine a few weeks ago. Can't really comment on the results coz i've changed my work out quite considerably. I have started getting cramp in some muscles though and some real bad aches!! Don't know if thats as a result of usinc C or not? What about the quality of creatine. Is creatine - Creatine or do you really get what you pay for? Should you go for the more expensive? or are they just bulked up wih products you don't need? Bretty
  20. I think lewis is quite a boring figter, just jab, jab-jab, jab, jab, jab. Quite dull and he doesn't really have a way with words. Lets face it were you watching the lewis fight or the Tyson fight... every one wants to see tyson. I think they are both well past it!! That fight should have been on years ago that would have been much more interesting. BTW i recall Mike Tyson saying the hardest hitting heavy weight he's fought was Frank Bruno!!!!   22. In real fights i think simplicity is the best thing. I wouldn't to step back else chances are he is gonna throw another one at you then another and so on. I wouldn't even dream of trying to apply a restraint either that ain't gonna work. I'd step forward into it with my chin tucked right into my shoulder, i'd raise my elbow (as if doing a raising elbow strike) To cover the whole side of my head. and tuck my head right behind it. Hopefully they'll punch my elbow. I now find my self stood at super close range. This is the point where no attacker wants you to be as they'll be off balance and won't have a clue what to do. This is the point where i light them up with elbows, kness and head butts. keeping in nice and tight!!! Bretty
  23. I can also agree that the book previously mentioned is really good and there are some great web sites also which i think have been mentioned above. Like said before stretching comes down to time and commitment. However a stretching machine has got to help. I wish i'd had a stretching machine to help me stretch especially one which supports your knees. So many stretches are bad for your knees!!!!! PNF, ISOMETRIC :eek: The worst things you'll ever do to your knees. Mind you they do make you flexi. Bretty
