  1. If you had a good student who ran into financial problems, would you allow this student to train for free?
  2. It seems that you are aware of your problem. Cut the flash and stick to basics.
  3. I've encountered numerous non martial artists who had no idea that there were different degrees of black belts so to them, all black belts were at the same level of skill.
  4. Hi Jeniifer and welcome!
  5. Unfortunately it is a recurring problem!
  6. Hi Ridge_hand and welcome!
  7. Unfortunately not all children learn at the same rate. Some parents complain when their children are not promoted when another child with the same or less amount of time is promoted. How do you deal with this?
  8. I once trained under a teacher who was always disrespectful to his students and I noticed that his students were also disrespectful (arrogant and talk down to others) I also trained under a teacher who showed respect to everyone and his students were also respectful to everyone else. Both teachers told their classes to practice respect but only one was successful. The bottom line is that the best way to teach respect is by example. Anyone had similar experiences?
  9. Although I practice the spearhand, I would hesitate to use it in a real situtation for fear fear of missing a soft target and breaking my fingers on a hard target. I'm wondering how many people have used the spearhand in a real confrontation.
  10. Any amount of training is better than no training. BJJ is a good art to learn. I used to pay $105 a month for 3 classes a week. In my opinion, it was well worth it!
  11. Hi Learner and welcome!
  12. I did go to a trial class at his school. He wasn't present. We did boxing and BJJ. Sorry, but I don't know much about him personally.
  13. In BJJ, you learn how to break arms and stuff through joint manipulation as opposed to some arts that teach breaking arms and stuff through joint strikes. Submission is how you prevent your arms and stuff from being broken.
  14. I am 50 years old and have been training in the martial arts since my teens. I am slower than I used to be. I always tell people that you cannot fight age. It will catch up to you. One thing that age cannot stop is knowledge. Your knowledge can always increase no matter how old you get so my goal in my life now is to constantly increase my skills technically. If I had to fight someone who was young and fast, I would try to fight smarter rather than trying to match speed.
  15. Hi PatC and welcome!
  16. The more that you train, the better the odds are in your favor but nothing is guaranteed. I agree with Treebranch "Never underestimate anyone".
  17. 50 years young
  18. One of my best students is someone in his mid 50s. He is the most consistant and puts 100% effort in what he does. He also loves to spar.
  19. I am 50 years old and I can't imagine what kind of condition I would be in if I weren't into martial arts.
  20. Hi Ashley and welcome!
  21. Hi Tom and welcome!
  22. Chuck Liddell trained in "Hawaiian" Kempo under John Hackleman.
  23. You don't see too many high kicks in UFC simply because the competitors are worried about their legs being caught by their opponents and being taken to the ground in a bad position. You do see a lot of leg kicks where the opportunity for people to grab their legs are minimal.
  24. My experience with the type of students that you described have always quit. I try to encourage them by telling them to stop worrying about anything and just do what they're told to do but if they refused, I move on and spend my time with the students who put forth effort. I would suggest trying to find more students who are more willing to do what's needed. I have trained many females who were more than willing to hit me hard and did whatever I told them to do without hesitation. I have trained the physically handicapped and the mentally handicapped with no problems but a person that needs to be "babied" will not make it in the martial arts world. (not without a complete overhaul of their attitude anyway)
