Pat Morita (Mr. Miyaga) Dies -- Sad
glockmeister replied to liquidkudzu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes, it is sad. I always liked him as an actor and as hockey as I thought the Karate Kid movies were, I always enjoyed them as they often made me laugh. -
Out of Curiosity, what did you find find wrong with these styles? JKD, Karate and Tai Chi seems like an overall good mix. Why did you stop taking them? The type of martial art you are looking for sounds alot like JKD.

If you wnat something somewhat traditional, yet very self defense oriented, you may want to consider Hapkido. There are many more modern styles as well..MT, Krav Maga, Haganah, JKD.. Basically, you have to shop around and find out what fits YOU. What works for one person may not work for another, which is one reason why there are so many different schools teaching so many different styles.

ghetto blocks?
glockmeister replied to Son Goku the monkeyking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"MOST DEADY STREET FIGHTING TECHNIQUE!" Sounds like about a gazillion ads for different style of one stripe or another. Funny, this ex hoodlum has now giving his life to God, so what does he do? try to market and sell to gangsters a lethal art designed to kill. I never heard of any style that was taight to "elite gang members" Maybe I missed something. Seems everyone in this country is looking to make a buck. -
quistions for Aikido
glockmeister replied to mean fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Warlock, I know a lot of the various types of wristlocks, etc, where taught to myself and others at the prison i am currently working in. They can be effective. but as far as being applicable, hmm depends on the situation. sometimes they work well and other times not so well. Aikido, as far as getting very proficient with it, takes alot more time then most corrections, LE agencies are realistically going to invest. Basically there is no administrator that is going to come out and admit it, but if you work in the field long enough, you will start to get the idea of where they stand on various self defense arts. They would much rather you get a busted jaw then you bust a perp's jaw. Sound hard to believe doesn't it? but its an unspoken rule of thumb. Why? because we can't get a broken jaw or a busted nose and turn around and sue the county, city, etc.. a perp can and can claim police brutality. That is the main reason why we are taught alot of armbars, wristlocks and others and not punches and kicks. The applications we are shown came mostly from Aikido and that's alot what they involve, not because the administration feels it's the most effective and best overasll system, but because there's less chance of you ending up with an excessive force charge and that protects THEM, not us. Whether you choose to believe that or not is somewhat irrelevant, but the reality is, most of our so called "self defense" trainig we get along with deadly force training, etc. is laughable. Again this has just been my experience and the experience of many sheriff's deptuties, cops and correctional officers I have met over the years. It may be different where you are at though. -
quistions for Aikido
glockmeister replied to mean fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Don't know if I would say it is most preferred by police officers as much as the Administrators. True, a lot of the wrist locks and such are effective in subduing perps and therefore it is somewhat populat with LE, I personally belive that the main reason that Aikido styles are taught to LE is more because it tends to be a "softer" style and a less agressive style and therefore better to teach the officers instead of someting harder and more agressive like say, Krav Maga or Karate because it lessens the likelihood of lawsuits. -
What do you carry to the gym with you?
glockmeister replied to IcemanSK's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I carry everything I may need. My bag has: My headgear Sparring gloves. Bag glaves. Grappling/fight gloves Mothpiece (it's a must) foot pads. Hand wraps. a gallon of water. Wrestling shoes. My cup and what I usually wear to train in I wear to the school. When doing the Israeli stuff its usually an old pair of BDU pants and a t shirt. ( I change into my wrestling shoes at the school. For TSD class I pack my gi and change there. -

It also helps if your car breaks down and you have to puch it, etc..lol I would also like to see a weight training forum. You cna also go over to https://www.bodybulding.com and check out there forums, they also have a powerlifting and strongman forum..alot of good info there. -
karva maga & Judo
glockmeister replied to RedRaven's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
It would be great to mix the two since Judo is big on sweeps and throws, something Krav Maga lacks. -
Yeah, that was the case. We just run class now from 730-9 now. I have not changed the website schedule. Then folks stay after nine to either roll or do iaido. Depends on who is there and what folks want to work on. Coool, thanks for the info. Will have to check it out when I get some free time.

Thanks for the info, although the classes seem awful short

This is where protein shakes and meal replacement drinks come in. If you arent hungry, you can still force down a liquid diet. what I used to do is eat soemthing every 3 hours, even if it was just an apple and a can of sardines. it will keep your metabolism running but will also keep a steady intake of calories and protein. Also since they are several small meals, you don't feel "stuffed" by gobbling down a large meal. This of cours ein conjunction with a good steady lifting routine.

That sounds really cool..what are the rates? are they reasonable?

Lifting lighter weights with more reps tends to work your fast twitch fibers. However, It has been known that lifting heavy weight not only targets the slow but also fast twitch simultainiously. so you tend to work both by lifting heavier weights whereas, lifting lighter only tends to work the fast twitch fibers

Do a google search on S.T.T.U. or Mark Lonsdale. He runs STTU he is an instructor in hand to hand combat as well as close quarters shooting and police sniping. He was written an informative book calls Close quarters combat and also sniper/countersniper to name a few.

Old martial arts training methods
glockmeister replied to UrbanSpice's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My TSD instructor would have us carry an 80 lb heavy bag up a very steep hill in the woods. then we would have to kinda relay it up and down the hill with each of us standing at different locations on the hill. Also he would sometimes use bamboo sticks on us as we were doing our forms, claiming it helps us learn to ignore pain and keeps us focused on our forms and not the stick and so on... -
Used some kickboxing skills. was in a bar ( I know, bad place to be) and ran into someone I knew there who had too much to drink. This was about a week before a scheduled match so I was in pretty good conditon. Anyway, for soem reason he was itching for a fight telling me how he was a "streetfighter" and streetfighters could actually "fight", not box, blah blah blah. well, did my best to kinda ignore him, but finally he went too far with some of the things he was saying so I said "let's go outside." The result? I don't think he would ever do that again. lol. Needless to say, the big bad "streetfighter" lasted about a grand total of about 30 seconds.

Its easier to spar with someone you know over someone you don't. It's the natural fear of the unknown that can sometimes make us nervous. When you dont know a person, you don't know thier skill level, intent, strength, etc..

Here we go another style vs. style thread lol...J/k.. Well I have seen some students doing southern praying mantis a long time ago. I can tell you there are almost no simularities between that and KM. They are different in that it appers kung fu would take much longer to learn and to develop usuable skills then KM. Km works from much more natural stances and works off of instincts. Praying mantis from what I have seen works off of what seems to be some rather unnatural stances and I havent seen any kind of grappling or groundwork in it either. I can't speak for all kung fu styles however. I have seen some Bai Kai Kung Fu and I thought that was a little more realistic for personal defence though. If I weren't doing the styles I am now, I wouldnt mind learning that. It also inclused grappling which is helpful to know.

Tell me about JKD
glockmeister replied to ShotokanKid's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I am not that familiar with Escrima I did notice them doing alot of training with kali sticks. At the same time, I dont train with them so not always sure what all they are doing. I have never trained in Escrima or Kali so you must forgive my ignorance of the two -

Nutrition today is better than it has ever been... the information on it, that is. However, some things can't be provided even with perfect nutrition- and that includes the needs of top performance and/or "hard core" athletes. A good multi vitamin, for example, is necessary for any serious athlete because you simply can't get enough to do everything you want to do from food alone. It's impossible. A guy working out hard enough will experience nutritional gaps that will impede his progress. 100% of olympic athletes, and probably professional body builders and the likes, suppliment with one. The same goes for creatine, gluatmine and other aminos... it's all about optimizing performance. You can't get mega doses of vitamins, minerals, creatine, amino acids, etc. from food; but those mega doses are useful in training and perfecting your body. That was a very good post Caged Warrior.

I am not quite sure I totally understand what you are saying. how does it not practice "resistance"? WE do alot of stand up fighting as well. I would imagine if for some reason someone would counter one technique we would simply take it to another.
