  1. I kinda view it the same way i view bodybuilder magazines. Alot of hype. Not saying there isnt some useful info in them, just I take it all with a grain of salt.
  2. Back in the mid 90's I was fully involved with Moo duk kwan and kickboxing. I actually started to compete in kickboxing, was in very good shape, young, and was training regurly. I was also supplementing my kickboxing with western boxing, my coach there was also my best friend. I was very happy with the progress i made. Then, unexpectedly, I had a bad accident and almost had my left hand severed. I went through two plastic surgeries, and had to go through almost a year of therapy. to get my left hand back to about 95% and it never got much better. During the first few months, I couldnt even tie my own shoes and had trouble dressing myself with only one good hand and the other in some wierd contraption the doctors made for me. I was off work, was getting lazy, gained weight, and worst of all, couldn't train. I was depressed and started taking up a habit I had kicked long before.,..smoking. after I finally got back to work and my hand wrist was "healed" my friend came over to hold the pads for me so I could do some boxing drills. The next day, my wrist hurt so bad and I was afraid of re-injuting the tendons, so depressed and frustrated, I stopped and pretty much decided my fight days were over. It wasnt till a good while longer when I met my TSD instructor that he got me motivated to get back into what I was doing before. up to that point, I had taken up weightlifting because I was tired of being out of shape. Basically, I finally decided to put my fears and laziness aside and push on. I am glad I did. As was posted before, nobody can tell you exactly what to do. Its basically up to you to push yourself. It seems you were reluctant to take the other poster's advice. I am not sure what you wanna hear but I cna say that after having to push myself and overcome my injury and my long time off, that there is no other way except through self motivation (along with the help of a good instructor who can guide you. Whenever you feel tired or unmotivated, then you have to double your efforts to re-motivate yourself. eventually, you will get back into your groove. Nobody can do it for you. think of how you will feel down the road if you give up and never get back into the shape you wanna be in. The longer you put things off, the harder it will be to get back to where you were. Sounds like the biggest enemy right now is yourself. Push yourself is all any of us can really advise because it really is the only way. Good luck.
  3. As was stated before, boxing or MT would greatly compliment your Krav Maga training. I dont know where you live but not every area has MT schools but booxing school are usually more common and more affordable.
  4. It is pleasing to see that in 10 pages of some very different opinions, nobody got into a flame war or style bashing rant. Personally I think the edge goes to the boxer in alot of cases due to the conditioning and alot of full contact sparring. One of the things my kickboxing/boxing coach used to tell me is that when a person is used to taking full power hits, they tend to lose their fear of getting hit, making it easier for them to block, parry and work around shots thrown at them. Notice I said the edge and didnt say a boxer would definately win. there are too many factors going into a random fight for there to be any absolutes.
  5. and you did it before I had a chance to
  6. Goju, I will definately agree that its better to have access to a barbell, but your origional post was that he wouldn't make much gains in muscle or strength with dumbells period. Fact is you can in fact make good dains with them. and yes you would have to eventually move up in weight with them, same as a barbell so I kinda figured that as a givin that eventually he would need to get heavier ones. But the same goes for barbell, as you get stronger, you have to get more weight plates, no different. I always prefer the dumbells that allow you to add weight to them rather then getting several different fixed weight dumbells.
  7. UM, yeah and your point?
  8. Why couldnt you? Dumbells can go pretty heavy. My old gym had 120 lb DB's and I would say you better be pretty strong to do DB bench presses with those. I have adjustable DB's that allow you to add weight to them. Anyway, yes you can use them for lower body. Dumbell squats and Dumbell lunges work you lower body well.
  9. If you want to get bigger and stronger, then you want to focus more on big lifts that use several muscles at one time such as bench press, deadlift, squats and power cleans and military presses. I would also focus less on higher reps and use a heaveir weight that allows you 4 to 6 reps, in time you an even sometimes do workouts with just doubles or singles. Also make sure you eat enough and get enough rest and recovery time to allow your muscles to recover.
  10. Madd, there are no known side effect from Proper usage and dosage of creatine. Obviously if you are taking several times the recommended dosage of anything it can be bad. There is no proof of negative side effect from taking it when not working out either.
  11. There is no law that says you MUST do each body part only once a week. Its just that usually people use it kinda as a rule of the thumb too avoid "overtraining. What body parts you do is your choice. You didn't mention what your goals were such as getting bigger, getting stronger, toning down, weight loss, etc. I like to basically break it down with the big three: Deadlifts, squats and bench presses. Each of thme being the main excersize on a certain day. Basically you simplest workout plan should work around back one day, legs another, chest another. With each day you may wanna throw in some supporting exersizes like doing dumbell presses after heavy BB bench, skullcrushers to finish off your triceps since they already got some good work fromt he bench. Also you can do some type of rowing exersize on deadlift day. Cant advise much else since you didnt mention what the ultimate goal was.
  12. Sounds like a good mix to me. But why take it only on lifting days? Usually most people, myself included cycle on and off it periodically. I take it every day for three months, then go off for a month and start over. I haven't taken it for awhile now but plan to start again soon. Would it help you on a MA day? I think it would help just about any work out day because it helps increase muscle endurance and speeds recovery time. Just make sure you drink LOTS of water, especially the days you are doing alot of excersize otherwise it can cause you to dehydrate. Lifting weights and MA is a good combo. Creatine will help. However I never went for those high priced concoctions with tons of extra stuff in it that costs and arm and a leg that you see advertized in all those bodybuilder magazines. I had good luck with Creadrive. Not too high priced but works quite well. You may wanna go over to bodybuilding.com and check out their sticky on creatine. Alot of useful info there.
  13. We should outlaw it.
  14. Having thousands of techniques to learn and remember can actually be a liability. Better to have a few god solid techniques then a few hundred that can confuse and work against you when the moment of truth comes. In a high stress SD situation, you dont want your mind running through hundreds of various techniques when all you may well need are one or two. For example, a straight punch. You dont need 20 different defenses to know against a straight punch. Youd dont need 25 techniques to defend against a choke. The prob I have encountered with many TMA is that they have so many different one steps and others that have as many as a few dozen different defenses against, say, a straight punch or a low kick that it all can get very confusing. I prefer to always use the KISS principle. Keeping things simple will help most people and its better to master a few techniques then practice several hundred.
  15. Anything by Tom Clancy. The Gunslinger series was good too although I hated the ending. Basically I read just about anything except romance and Sci Fi. Even the old books like the Divine Comedy and the Illiad are great.
  16. I never heard anything like that either. A chocalate bar wont hurt, in fact there are actually antioxidants in chocalate, that when concumed in moderation, can actually be helpful I read about the benefits of hot cocoa and I will look and see if I still have the article somewhere.
  17. No Prob Soem of the gun defenses in KM I still like. The reality is, unless you actually are doing them it is hard to appreciate some of the defenses, for example, looking at some pics of their gun defenses, I didn't like that I saw, when I saw the entire strategy in person, I liked it better.
  18. sure I can add.. Yes Haganah was an organization at one time..the word itself simply means defence. Also you are right. Krav Maga was not technically founded in Israel, the man who invented it grew up in Europe and used to as a way of teaching the jews to defend themselves. When he later moved to palestine, he eventually because teaching it to the IDF after some modifications to the "style" KM is NOT a mass of compiled styles all thrown together. It is actually an integrated system. People who Make such claims either never studied it, or havent studied it very long. Mike Kanerek who invented haganah is also well trained in KM, from what I understand, his main problem was he thought the knife defences needed an overhaul. He would know. But then, thats the good thing about both is that they are constantly being enhanced and modified as more data as to what "works" comes out about different situations, etc. Hisardut is more of a stand up style somewhat similar to MT. That, you would be correct to say is somewhat integrated in the overall Haganah corriculum. To respond to your comment about what Haganah as an organization needed and didnt need. The overal haganah fighting system aslo covers tactical handgun, tactical knife as well as carbine. it is not totally an emptyhanded system. Also you must keep in mind that the IDF has to deal with more than just being on a battle field as we think of one, because in Israel, your local coffee shap can be one. some soldiers will find themselves doing police work as well as military operations.
  19. Not sure I totally understand this statement: You EASILY realize they are following you, but they grab and push you into an alley BEFORE YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS? If you realize they are following you, why would you allow them to get within arms reach? If you notice them, and they begin to follow, why wouldn't you just RUN? In this case, it's definately not a sudden, surprise attack. By their antics, they draw attention to themselves and make you aware of both thier presence and their distance from you. There is no reason they should then be able to grab you before you realize there is a danger since you already realized you were being followed.
  20. I agree with that statement 100%. As soon as he would get between me and the car he would be either getting a full force groin kick or knee to the groin, that would be one down.....
  21. I just got tattoo number 16. It is the Krav Maga logo on the inside of my left bicep. It has the hebrew letters for K and M inside a circle and the words Krav Maga over the emblem
  22. Yes I have heard great things about Mike Lee Kanerek. I havent had the pleasure to meet and train under him directly as my instructor has but from what he says, the guy is amazing.
  23. Well, I also do weight training, so On my off days I am usually weightlifting, when not doing that, I recently found a guy who was willing to come by and Box with me. I can do that in my yard, also have a heavy bag down in my gym in the basement.
  24. If its a good enough school, I don't really need more of a reason do I?>
  25. Says who? Jesus himself showed some righteous anger when he stormed the marketplaces and started knocking over the moneychangers tables and drove the animals and people out with whips and accused them of making his father's home a den of thieves. There is nothing in the new testament that states not to fight to protect yourself or loved ones. The idea of "turning the other cheek" was him talkign to his disciples who were to follow in his footsteps as was documented in the book of ACTs.
