Ah, I always love to read your posts, you seem to have such interesting ideas. I'm just a college freshman (though people seem to mistake me for a 25 year old) so I might not be as well read as I should be, but I could give this a go. Anyways, I must admit that I have never read Hedda Gabler, but I think more people on here would have read Of Mice and Men which I really like. Anyone have any general opinions on the book? or the relationship between how simple minded Lennie and Forest Gump are and how their simplicity of mind takes them down two different paths? I always thought it was kind of interesting myself, Forest Gump puts himself in all the right positions, while Lennie's downfall is his lack of understanding.

yeah, we do potlucks every year too, I can't believe I forgot about that.

After every tournament we would find a Chinese restaurant and have a big meal "family style" even though we practiced Okinawan karate and kobudo. Also, we have the tradition that after you were promoted you needed to wear the belt for 24 hours. Our promotions for colored belts were usually on Teusdays and Thursdays, so that was kind of interesting.

Where is your Martial Arts "Home"??
isshinryu5toforever replied to username9's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My origins lie in Okinawan martial arts with Isshin-Ryu and some Aikido thrown in. I have branched out into Japan with a little bit of Judo. I have seen some Chinese arts like Bagua and Northern Praying Mantis. I have also done Korean arts like Tae Kwon Do. I must say that there are elements in each that I like. I am Korean, so I suppose I should hate Japan lol. Actually, I like the Japanese martial arts the most. I don't like WTF, maybe it's just what surrounds me, but I haven't really fallen in love with it thus far. I respect the Chinese arts, but I have trouble with application sometimes, because the ones shown me have not always made sense. -
lol very nice monkeygirl. For some reason your post on the misinterpretation of Frost made me think of Romeo and Juliet. Because that entire play is oft misinterpreted, for it is not a grand love story as everyone deems it to be. It is Shakespeare telling everyone how stupid young love is. Also, in the famed "romantic" balcony scene our young Romeo is actually doing quite badly. Anyways, I shouldn't ramble more in a forum that is not meant for my subject. If anyone wants more explaination just contact me. lol, but why would you, it'd be like high school English all over again. "The best things in life are nearest: Breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life's plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life." --Robert Louis Stevenson "You may never know what results come of your actions. But, if you never take action there will be no result." -Mahatma Ghandi

The funniest thing in Prince of Thieves was the fact that everyone in the entire cast had a great old english accent, anyone remember the old guy with no teeth "But we ain't got nothin ta eat." And then Robin Hood (Costner) starts talking, and he has no accent whatsoever. It's just hillarious. Basketball is kind of funny the San Francisco mascot might be the best though.

Trying to gain weight...happening veeeery slowly
isshinryu5toforever replied to BritNoob's topic in Health and Fitness
You can sit and do all three sets at one station and then move on to the next excercise but it will take longer. All of my program suggestions are 3 sets. The number of reps is what I posted. 5-3-1 5 repetitions 3 repetitions 1 repetition. Pick weights that are challenging. For shoulders military press, incline bench, etc. those will help you. You can't do the Atkins and gain though, because you won't have enough energy. Remember Atkins cuts down carbs to about 22 grams a day. Your body need more than that if you are going to be doing tough physical activity. Atkins is not good for someone who wants to gain like he does. -

For pure mass you need to change the way you lift. You can either do pyramid lifts 10-8-6-4-2, or you can do it this way. Week 1 squat and benchpress do a warmup set of something you can press 10 times. Then do 3 sets of 3. hike the weight up each time unless you fail to do 3 on your second set then keep the weight the same.Do other shoulder and bicep lifts. Deadlift and cleans 3 sets of 3. Do incline press and work on triceps. Third day do other auxillary lifts and plyometrics. Week 2 Squat and bench warmup with 10 then do 3 sets of 5. The same process as the first week. Deadlift and cleans 3 sets of 5. Third day same. Week 3 Squat and Bench warmup with 10. 3 sets 5 reps 3 reps 1 rep. Do as many as you can of the last set. Don't just do 1 if you can do more. Deadlift and clean 5-3-1 third day run at a muscle gaining heartrate not a fat burning one. Week 4 Bench and squat 10-8-6 deadlift and cleans 4-4-2 same auxillaries for both. Third day you can run again if you want or mix it up with something else. I like to bike 6 days a week as well if I have the time. I also practice my martial arts 7 days a week, but I know not everyone has enough time to do so. -

They are the same, one is just the Okinawan pronunciation. -

The Tonfa is a great choice. Are you doing Hama Higa No Tuifa? I wish you luck at your tournaments. -
that's the way to pay attention to detail

The Great Outdoors is definitely a classic. Racoon: "Did you hear about Molly? She got shot in the butt, now she's bald on both ends."

back fist spin 270 degrees downblock front kick.

Judo has 12, I thought i heard about one of the Korean associations having 12 too, maybe I was mistaken or that was just someone talking.

You can die horseback riding, skiing, walking across the street, sitting in a movie theater, etc. I don't think you have too much to worry about when it comes to sparring, unless you feel like you need to go bareknuckle right away.

I never liked the pre-brown belt striping idea. I feel like the standard color belt rankings are good enough. If it takes more time for certain people, so be it. I guess it can work as an encouragement tool though, to keep them going.

try the weapons forum

keep practicing, and doing what you've been doing. Don't worry about rank so much.

depends on the style and association. Isshin-Ryu has judan. I think that Tang Soo Do uses 12.

That was how it was told to me by a 6th degree black belt in TKD. Including the whole part about Choi. Now the problem with history, is that it is all up to who is telling it. So, the only people that know the story are those that were there. I would have to go to the Shotokan dojo in Japan and look up Choi's records (which the Japanese are careful about with everyone who enters their dojos) and then I would be able to tell you exactly how long he practiced, and what rank he received. Maybe I am confusing Choi with another, which I appologize for, but if I recall correctly that was what I was told.

Jeet Kun Do - The Way of the Intercepting Fist -
General Choi only received a green belt after studying Shotokan for 8 months at a Japanese dojo. Then he went to the newly elected president, and said you know we should have a national sport, some sort of martial art. The president said, alright, you're in charge. So, General Choi went to one of his friends who was a black belt and asked him to do the whole thing, but of course Choi got the credit. So they taught what was then called something else which escapes me at this very moment. Then the Kwan families got together (Ji Do Kwan, Mu Duk Kwan, etc.) to figure out what they should call the new sport. After a while the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen. All of the poomsae were the same as the Shotokan ones. Then it came time for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Then, someone said, you know what, all of our poomsae are Japanese. We need truly Korean forms. So, the Taeguk forms were created to be demonstrated. Thus the World Tae Kwon Do Federation who has their headquarters in Kukkiwon (thus the Kukkiwon federation) does Taeguk forms in lieu of the original TKD/Shotokan poomsae/kata done by the International Tae Kwon Do Federation. There are a few more gory details, but this is a good overview.

that'd be great. Advinula studied under Nagle right? Now, he's under Shinsho Shimabuku whom he supports as the head of Isshin-Ryu I believe? But yeah, that info would be appreciated, thank you very much
