Frustrated with lag of training
dippedappe replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"As for JKD in general, was this instructor taught by Bruce Lee?" No he wasn't. He was taught JKD from a (I guess) large center of JKD, probably Jun Fan JKD. I have heard that it's really difficult to find a good JKD instructor, and this one probably ain't one of them. But what do I know. I have been thinking about going back to Shaolin, and take Wing Tsun at the same time. From what I gathered, theres a new instructor in the WT school. For the other fool, I can only say good riddance. I will call the school to hear if I'm still a member. Hoepfully I am, since I somehow didn't have to pay for the lessons . Thanks for the help everyone. -
http://wtmag.dk/filmarkiv.php?type=l I have just seen these clips of Wing Tsun. Wing Tsun is almost the same as Wing Chun, so I will view it like that too. The teacher does some fast movements when hitting the opponent, but where is the power in those hits? European Boxer against Wing Chun etc. How would the Boxer fall with these loose handed punches with no power what-so-ever? I really don't see how this can be effective against a competent fighter.

Frustrated with lag of training

I have just gotten a mail from him now. He doesn't know when he will start again because he hasn't found a place for the school yet. Plus that he is studying. He said he hope that the training will start again soon. I haven't been training for almost a year now, so another months lag of practice wont kill me, but it could just as well take longer. A private lesson (1 hour) is about 23 dollars. I'm not sure I can afford that. Not yet atleast. -

I have send the JKD trainer a mail about when he think he will be open for training again. I still haven't desided yet what to do if he do not answer the mail, or if it's a long wait for it to start. Kung Fu in the meantime would be the most sane choice, but JKD is the only thing on my mind. -
I'm so frustrated and confused on what to do now. I have three options. I have found a Jeet Kune Do school where I live, but the place has been shut down for some reason. The teacher was apparently a financial fool, or just very unlucky. The JKD training is down until he can find a new place for the school. Which can take forever for all I know. He haven't answered my mails yet. I really really want to start in this schools. The other option is probably the one with the least quality. There is a Wing Tsun school where I live. But the teacher in there are somewhat ignorant. But at least I can get some Wing Chun alike training there. I do not know if I want to train there or not. The last option is the old school I used to train before I quite with MA. It's Northern Shaolin. Long Quan Pai, and apparently none here have ever heard of that style. But that baby has almost everything, and is beautiful too. But it takes a lot of time to be able to fight well with the style. But I loved it. It's however an hours drive from where I live to the place, and I can only train there once a week. I have thought about taking up Shaolin again, and then fill in the holes with the Wing Tsun training. Right now, the only thing I want to train is Jeet Kune Do, but I can't, and I don't want to train the other styles just to skip them when Jeet Kune Do finally starts again. The options I have (the way I see it) is, 1)Wait for Jeet Kune Do to start. 2)Begin Shaolin and Wing Tsun together. If I wait for JKD, then I might be in for a long time with no training. If I choose Shaolin and Wing Tsun, I wont start JKD when it starts, but concentrate on Kung Fu. What do you think I should do?

Are modern Ninjas active?
dippedappe replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I might have mistaking the katana with the ninja-to. I do know that they use ninja-to, but I'm still sure that I have read or seen ninjas using katanas too somewhere. I did not know that Taijutsu was the same as Ninjitsu. Or maybe it's just a style of Ninjitsu? From what I have seen of Ninjas from documentation films, Action movies and books, Ninjas did use high kicks, acrobatics, katanas, sai, nunchakus among the other weapons JusticeZero mentioned. My guess would be that different Ninjitsu styles used different moves and some might use more weapons than other styles. All this may be refering to Ninja in newer age though. And I'm not saying that Ninjitsu is not effective in a fight. I'm just using logic by saying that, if they use much of their time in training in stealth, training to be quick and stealthy in natures surroundings, and killing in one stealthy hit with their sword or shuiken, their Ninja-magic and making smokebombs. Then it's logic to me that they aren't devoting themselves to fighting in a realistic fistfight in the most effective way, when they are designed for killing fast and stealthy, and not for having a vs fight with their target. After all, they were assassins and spies. It's not like I'm just mindlessly disagreing with you. But if I do not find what you say logic, or it doesn't have anything to do with what I'm saying, or if you have misunderstood, or if I know it's wrong, then I will disagree with you until I understand I'm wrong. That is of cause also the basics of a discussion. -
Capoeira good for self defense?
dippedappe replied to MFGQ's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Capoiera is apparently very effective in a vs battle. Very difficult to beat a good Capoiera student. Or so I have read from other posts like this. I can't figure out how it can be effective in streetfight however. But one wrote that Capoiera in a fighting situation is much different from the dancing that we see. That it's very effective in a streetfight too. But I do not personally know anything about this. I just write what I have read. -

Take Jeet Kune Do etc. Thats about fighting in the most effective way possible. Ninjitsu is not. In Ninjitsu, you learn to be stealthy, to kill stealthy and quickly, and a bit mumbojumbo. Yes Ninjas train to be effective fighters in hand-to-hand combat, but it's not their purpose. Acrobatics are very difficult to use effective in a hand-to-hand fight, but it is a very good thing for moving quickly and stealthy. Therefore it doesn't matter if acrobatics aren't useful in a fight for a ninja. Why would I mean gun when I write katana? No I don't mean gun, because guns weren't used by Ninjas in that era. And Ninjas do use sai. It might first have been a Karate weapon, but it's been a ninja weapon too for quite some time now. I really don't think that was TKD. And even if it was (however unlikely), they did do a hell lot more than fighting hand-to-hand. And since TKD is Korean, I doubt there are katanas in that MA. The guys in the clips used katanas. They also used some hand techniques that looked very much like the "Ninja-magic" ninjas learn. And they did know how to use the inviroments very well. To me it looks like it's very unlikely that they weren't trained in the Ninja arts. -

I dont think I did. What I meant with what I said was, that they aren't training to be able to defend themself in a streetfight in the most effective way, or fighting other styles. They are training to put a Katana or Sai in the back of the victim without him or the others knowing it. What is so silly about it? I'm not daydreeming of being Ninja of the old days. I train Kung Fu. I was only wondering about this question. Nothing silly about that. -
Your moves are based on Chi Sau right? That was what I meant. You try to "stick" to the opponent as a defensive way to control him, sort of. I have heard this. A beginner Wing Chun student (1 month's training), would beat a beginner Shaolin student. But a longtime Wing Chun student (1 years training) would loose to the longtime Shaolin student. This is hardcore generalizing with no consideration of the two individuals I know, but technically, will this be true? Is Shaolin better in a style vs style in the long run?

You are wrong with real Ninjas not existing, if this is what you are saying. There are still traditional Ninjas and Samurai in Japan: But thats more of trying to keep the traditions alive for being sort of a trademark for Japan. Much like Shaolin Wushu in China. They are of cause not doing what the traditions was created for anymore. Ninjas aren't meant for fighting in the most effective way. They are meant to kill in the most swiftest and stealthiest way, I would think that acrobatics are very useful if not essential for that purpose. -
Most MA styles comes from Shaolin. That doesn't make them a Shaolin style. I don't think you can say WC is a Shaolin style, but what do I know. Haven't trained it yet. I wonder what WC have of tools. They have their Chi Sao defense techniques, their low Front kick and their Chain punching. What else?

Wing Chun is effective in streetfights. Or so I have heard over and over again. But what about say a Shaolin style? The Shaolin style has many more moves at their disposal than Wing Chun. And are able to keep distance too. Will Wing Chun be effective against Classic styles? I do realise this might be a style vs style flaming post, but does it really matter?

Thats a shame. I have seen some clips of some Ninjas of moder time. Training both the traditional weapons aswell as guns http://www.ninjitsu.com/. It's difficult for me to believe that they can't be used effectively for their original pursoses any longer. Kicks and punches aren't all they train after all. And about the hand-to-hand combat training they use. Is that just simple Karate, or is it a speciel style of it's own? It doesn't look like Karate to me, but that might be because they have so much acrobatics. -
I wonder if Ninjas are still being used for their traditional purpose, or other purposes? Are Ninjas still being used for espionage and contract killing etc? Or is the profession nothing more than a sport now?
