This is true...but it's a bad "telegraph" if the person you're fighting knows what he's doing and he can "check" or block your lead foot easily. That's why I try to stand on my rear leg in such a way that my sparing partners don't know what I'm about to do . But mainly I use neko ashi dachi in a way that I wait for an attack and then try to intercept it, so my opponent rushes in on my shomen geri. It's also a great tactic to wait for the opponent to try with ashi barai and while he sweaps I kick (this one is my favourite).

Uechi-ryu has neko ashi dachi in Seichin, Seiryu, Kanchin and Sanseiryu kata. The movement is allways combined with wauke (mawashi-uke) or sukui-uke. For me it's a great fighting stance since you can throw kicks with the leading leg that has no weight on it.

Yeap, only few things can compare to the feeling you get when you take somebody under your wing (it's just like having a child ). And believe me, nothing can compare to the feeling that somebody is looking after you in the dojo.

Ah yes, the bible of Uechi-ryu karate. Actually it's in Okinawan dialect (Hogen) not Japanese and it is said to be impossible to read. Luckily there are a lot of pictures , so I was able to get much information out of it.

Bujitsu
Karate-addict replied to The Law Of The Fist's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Hm, never heard about martial art with that name . Bu-jutsu (or jitsu) is a word describing all jutsu arts like Ken-jutsu, Naginata-jutsu, Aiki-jutsu, Karate-jutsu, Ju-jutsu, Bo-jutsu etc. Later (at the start of the 20th century) the martial arts (bujutsu) became martial ways (Budo) like Judo, Kendo, Aikido, Karatedo etc. -
I too prefer Shureido but i buy the tournament version because of the shorter sleeves. I find it more practical especially in the warmer months.

Sorry but I do not see a problem here. The orange belt getts a lot from working out with a black belt (in this case you are her pitbul), especially if you'll give her tips on what to improve or simply to try to give her a hard time, after a few weeks or a few months you will see the difference in her, she will become faster in her attacks and probably she will be able to block some of your punches or kicks. By working with her you can also improve, by seeing her faults and then trying to explain to her the correct way. That is what being a "sempai" is all about, taking care of the "kohai". Besides if you want to improve for your tournament, you can allways go to your sensei or one of your sempai after the formal class for additional few minutes of practice.

No Jax_Evolution. KaiShin means Chito-ryu karate. Founded by Tsuyoshi Chitose. Here is an article about him. http://www.dragon-tsunami.org/Dtimes/Pages/article33.htm

If you are interested in different styles, try getting Unante: the secrets of karate by John Sells, it is one of the most informative books with over 500 pages, sadly the price is very high but in my opinion it is a "must have" for any serious karateka interested in detailed history of karate.

Goju-ryu came out of Naha-te but Uechi-ryu did not. It's a sister style to Goju-ryu with many similiar techniques because it originated from the similar source in Fuchou China but it's a much younger style to be considered as Naha-te. Also it came from China after 1910, much later than Naha-te of Kanryo Higaonna. And it was first tought in mainland Japan in 1924. The first time it was tought on Okinawa was around 1945 in Nago.

Questions about IsshinRyu and other forms of Karate
Karate-addict replied to Bama Crimson's topic in Karate
Tatsuo Shimabuku (the founder of Isshin-ryu ( one heart style )) was a student of Chotoku Kyan who tought him Shobayashi Shorin-ryu and Chojun Miyagi founder of Goju-ryu. So the style incorporates kata from both styles: Seisan, Seiunchin, Naihanchi, Wansu, Chinto, Sanchin, Kusanku and Sunsu (created by Shimabuku). Shotokan follows the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi who had two teachers; Azato and Itosu. Both did Shorin-ryu karate. Kyokushinkai is karate of Masutatsu Oyama who studied under Gichin Funakoshi and Gogen "The Cat" Yamaguchi who was a student of Chojun Miyagi. So again this one is a mixture of Shorin-ryu and Goju-ryu. The kata are the same (to the ones in Shorin or Goju) but tought in a different approach because every teacher finds something else inside of them that he likes and finds usefull. -
How KF has helped me
Karate-addict replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Karate has it's ups and downs, the important thing is to keep practising. And when feeling that your karate has stoped progresing read a good book (about Karate or any other martial art ), that always gets my spirit and motivation up. -
When you execute the strike use your hips. But the best advice I can give you is: ask your sensei for help or look into Masatoshi Nakayama's book Dynamic Karate.

In our Dojo we show the new students, on their first day, basic stances (sanchin dachi, kiba dachi), punches (seiken, nukite), kick (shomen geri) and block (mawashi uke). After these basics and a few more classes, they learn sanchin kata, when they can perform it on their own (without help from a sempai) they join the rest of the class. This is also the way i started when i joined the club.

How to get sensei to teach me my new stuff?
Karate-addict replied to GojuRyu Shawn's topic in Karate
At our Dojo we have a guy who is a shodan for 5 years now and despite training only 3 times per month and neglecting "the old stuff" as he calls the kata that are for lower belts (in his opinion again), he thinks that he is more then ready to go on an exam for nidan . Oh and by the way a green belt karateka has a better techniq, speed and kime than him. -
Interesting Fact...10th Degree Black Belt in Karate

Thanks for the info nago. By the way, is Hiroyasu the only karateka amongst Kansei's sons? -
Interesting Fact...10th Degree Black Belt in Karate
Karate-addict replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in Karate
Nago I am not familiar with the name Uechi Hiroyasu. Are you perhaps talking about Kamei or one of his brothers? -
I'do two martial arts. In karate we have 8 kata and in Chuan Fa we do only the short and the long form, so I don't have to memorize a lot of same repeting movements with lots of different kata aka forms. I do Tai Ji Quan mainly because it helps with my karate, I'm more relaxed and soft during strikes before kime. Plus it gives me a different prospective into karate techniqs.

Interesting Fact...10th Degree Black Belt in Karate
Karate-addict replied to Shorin Ryuu's topic in Karate
My sensei has his sandan for over 12 years and has been practising karate for over 30. Yet he doesn't seem to care going to test for yondan. He says it's just politics and as long as there are no candidates for sandan in our dojo he won't test for higher rank. By the way a huge welcome to nago-san, a fellow Uechi-ryu karateka. Under which sensei do you study karate? -
Perhaps but I would say that it depends on the teacher (how he teaches) and the individual (how he does his kata). I see different approaches in my class, some students do it hard with strong kime at the end of each strike some do it fast, soft and fluid with kime that can't be seen and some do a beautiful job of combining both ways.
