  1. Sure, I agree with you on that. I just hope he knows that if he goes and studys a different M.A. and after 2 years comes back to Shotokan, he will probably not be a nidan candidate.
  2. I do karate for 9 years now, it took me 7 years to get to shodan, I had my brown belt for 3 years before my sensei gave me the permition to take the exam for black belt. Why? Because he was testing me if I was patienced enough, that is karate's most desarible virtue, patience. Besides, you now have two years to improve your basics, become stronger, you can work on your speed etc. I hope you get my point. It's not about your rank, it's about your ability. P.S. I rather be a shodan that can kick sandan's * then a sandan getting his * kicked by a shodan.
  3. I'll be quick. Does age matter? No.
  4. Actually all of karate's kata (no matter what style) are or were Chinese. But about Sanchin, there are sam Gung Fu styles that have Sam chien form which is similar to Sanchin. This is mentioned in the book Five Ancestor Fist Kung Fu:The way of Ngo Cho Kun written by Alexander L. Co.
  5. I got into Karate in october 96. My brother and I wanted to learn selfdefense and there was a Karate Dojo two blocks away from where we live. So we started training there and haven't stoped since. Also now it's much more then just selfdefense, it really is a way of life.
  6. So far it looks like I'm the only Uechi-ryu practicioner here.
  7. Off course but if we hit someone to hard (it happens) and he drops to the floor we don't get disqualified .
  8. Yes, we don't have any limitations about which techniques are allowed.
  9. Sounds to me that you did the right thing but you could stick around and tell him you won't take crap from him anymore. Anyway don't fell bad about kicking him that was probably the best lesson he had since starting school.
  10. Mine is like SOO, short, sharp and loud. I used to do DAA but that one didn't come from the abdomen it came from the throat, so I replaced it.
  11. I think Seido funder is Tadashi Nakamura who was the top student of Mas Oyama, for a long time he was a representative of kyokushin karate in USA. A long time ago there was a challenge from Thailand to Japanese karateka to fight Muai Thai fighters. Oyama's students accepted the challenge, Nakamura was one of them. Anyway karateka's kicked their *. Sounds like a fairytell I know . Here is an article about Nakamura http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=76
  12. Tai Ji Quan's pushing hands has the answer. Like someone already said, step aside sweap his hands away with your hands ( similar to mawashi uke in karate ) and while doing that turn the wrists around and then you push him. That way you don't have to punch him.
  13. We do block-grab-hit kinda stuff. All our blocks can turn into grabing at the end, so we can either proceed into a lock, throw or pulling the opponent on our punches.
  14. True, but so what? I walk my way and I let them walk theirs.
  15. I do traditional Karate-Do. By this I mean we don't do Karate as a sport but as a BuDo. Our primar study is kata and bunkai.
  16. I think BJJ includes punching with fists and elbows or knees on the floor while JJ practitioners only use locks. I migt be wrong perhaps it depends on the teacher and not on the style.
  17. I read a few books and I was wondering why do we have jiu jitsu, jiu jutsu, ju jitsu & ju jutsu ? I always use the term ju jutsu and by this I mean the grapling system that existed before judo, also when reading Donn F. Draeger's books he always points out that ju-jutsu is the correct term. Anyway please help a confusing mind .
  18. I know a guy who studies KM, nothing new when it comes to the tehnics, basicaly kick and punch, twist and swep kinda stuff, except they are being tought in a way that every conflict results in death of the assailant or with a very serious injury like taking his eye out.
  19. Nobody is faster then bullet . Or perhaps there are some people who can catch it with their teeth .
  20. I would say it's best to get your black belt first and then start with JJ, it's hard and confusing walking on two paths. But of course that is just my opinion.
  21. For forearms: we do kote-ki-tae (hitting the forearm with shuto-uchi). For the wrist I do push-ups on my fists. But the best way to condition both, in my opinion, is to use makiwara.
  22. Yes, sanchin was brought long before 1910 but that is sanchin of Goju-ryu karate, I was talking about Uechi-ryu's. Sanchin kata of Kanbun is similar but different, just like seisan and sanseiryu, same name different tehnics.
  23. I also started with 16 years and i think that is the best age to start, anyway, welcome.
  24. I study Yang style like you, my teacher's teacher was a chinese guy living in Milano. I'm not shure but i think his name was Chang Tsu-Yuan. By the way, I'm from Slovenia so we are like neigbours on this forum .
  25. Thanks for the welcome. ncole_91-congratulations on getting your orange belt .
