Hello Bobby I see you like the faces, haha (me too! lol). Looking forward to learning more about shotokan from you. My knowledge of the Japanese martial arts has always been limited

These are all very good points. Especially the one about spitting in the attacker's face. That is definitely more of a psychological blow than anything! We are conditioned to be totally disgusted by that idea and almost all of us would be more fazed by a huge glob of that stuff than many right hooks or jabs (er well maybe not, haha _________________ Power can accomplish a lot of things. Can someone learn an Art form books?
spinninggumby replied to muaythaidm's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that books and videos are an excellent supplement to one's martial arts training once you have established a solid foundation in basic training involving interaction with trained and credible instructor(s). After having much experience with your style, your mind and body is much stronger and more aware so you learn how to filter out what makes sense and what doesn't, what naturally works for your body and what doesn't, etc. Granted there are many useful forms of media out there but there are also many books or videos which may promote useless and/or harmful strategies or advice. -

I feel that sport taekwondo may be a very good complement to wing chun because much of sport tkd does not really operate on any type of theory or ideology (therefore it's quite flexible) and most practitioners just use it in tournaments. The centerline principle(s) ?? in wing chun can be incorporated for self-defense quite easily I would think for someone who is a tkd practitioner yet new to wing chun with good footwork and flexibility and kicking skills. Just as long as the sport tkd guy realizes that he is moving from a sport-oriented discipline to one that is more oriented towards practical application. Wing chun is mostly hands-based and would definitely be great for those WTF'ers who have bad habits of not keeping their hands up to guard.

Rush Hour 2 was definitely funny IMHO. Just don't expect anything as great as Jackie Chan was in his prime Chris Tucker definitely stole the screen. Some people find him annoying and extremely obnoxious but I think if it's under 2 hours once in a while it's ok, hehehe

I only played the first Shenmue with my friend. I think we got almost all the way through but for one reason or another we did not finish it. Even though some of the voice-acting was kinda monotone it was very innovative hehehe I really liked all the Capcom fighting games that were ported over to the Dreamcast (Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2, Guilty Gear, SF Alpha 3, etc.

These memories bring tears to my eyes. I should stop responding before it gets too late. :bawling:

My tendency is to focus too much on solitary training with emphasis on flexibility, technique, and form and not enough conditioning. Although repetition of techniques is a sure way to condition the body as a whole, I do not practice enough plyometrics or weightlifting, wind sprints, etc. in order to possibly speed up progress by isolating certain muscles or areas/aspects of fitness enhancement.

Hey grunger It's great to see more kung fu practitioners on this forum. My initial base was in kung fu but unfortunately I was not able to train that long before switching to modern wushu and taekwondo. I'm looking forward to hearing your input regarding the Chinese arts

Yea that was a great one too. I still have all the names of the fighters memorized (in order! haha) lol Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, Piston Honda, Don Flamenco, King Hippo, Great Tiger, Bald Bull, 2nd Piston Honda match, Soda Popinski, 2nd Bald Bull match, 2nd Don Flamenco match, Mr. Sandman, Super Macho Man, and then the big guy himself, although IMHO right now his status deserves a little less props LOL

TAE KWON DO????? What?
spinninggumby replied to koreantiger81's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Remember that a lot of the differences and separation between ITF and WTF (and other taekwondo groups or organizations) result from political motives or reasons. The possibility of uniting the ITF and WTF is almost as likely to happen as the U.S. joining with communist China or Afghanistan as a single country. Maybe I'm just being too cynical? -
Yes, I would hafta agree that the SNES was the best overall console system ever. It had so many worthwhile good games that I would still play for hours today, not to even mention back then. Who remembers Super Metroid, Street Fighter 2 (the first awesome arcade translation), Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Kart, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Mortal Kombat (ok, well, maybe not), Contra 3: Alien Wars, etc. hehehehe The N64 was good too but its primary strength was in multiplayer games such as Goldeneye and Diddy Kong Racing and stuff. With the PS2, there are a lot of good games, but not enough in proportion to the total number of games released in my humble opinion. Exceptional mention goes to Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Devil May Cry, etc. I haven't played much Xbox but I know that Halo is one to get. I really liked the Dreamcast too, because it had a lot of good Capcom fighting games and I love those, but too bad it had a short life. Can't wait for Gamecube! Mario will always be #1 in my eyes, hehehe

Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
spinninggumby replied to Phantasmatic's topic in General Chat
Why was Senator Amidala the only character in the film to change her clothes every day while everyone else wore the same thing? She must shop at Intergalactic Gap or something. And why did her shirt get shorter with every scene toward the end LOL Star Wars has definitely taken a turn towards the mainstream. -
WTF Tournament Experience
spinninggumby replied to spinninggumby's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Usually you don't lose very much flexibility over a few days to a week's rest. After a month or so of sitting around and eating Pringles, you may feel a bit of a decline. Flexibility is more of a nervous system regulation thing more than a muscle or ligament elasticity thing :bawling: -
WTF Tournament Experience
spinninggumby posted a topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yesterday I competed in the bantamweight (I forgot the exact name, I'm 125 lbs) division of an WTF presidents cup type tournament or whatever and it was a great experience for me. I got a gold medal even though I wasn't quite sure if I deserved it. The guys I went up against were so friggin aggressive, I must have blocked like fifty of their kicks, and now my wrist is either severely bruised or strained (I don't know which one, it's swelling and it hurts to close my hand into a fist or move my fingers or basically move anything around it period) and my left thigh is bruised and I have trouble straightening my leg. I was mostly defensive and the hits that I got in were clean but I did not attack much at all, just countered here and there. Anyways, I am not used to WTF sparring but it was extremely tiring to go those few rounds with 110%. Even though I blocked most of everything, I would have thought that they would have beaten me or scored on pure chance alone given the quantity of their attacks. All I could think about in the first 30 seconds of the first round was how I was going to get pummeled. Anyways I am glad that I got 1st place only because it makes my school have a good standing and because yesterday was my dad's birthday so I gave the medal to him. On the other hand, if I were one of the judges I would have given the win to my opponents. WTF....merely sport, of course, but also extremely taxing, can be painful, and draining on the body if you are committed, LOL Any advice and/or words of encouragement or wisdom to someone who is in pain (limping and has trouble opening doors or even driving)? LOL I know that eventually I will heal as long as I get enough rest but gosh it is killing me because I am one of those people who does not like to sit still for even short periods of time _________________ It's not about getting what you want.
