  1. My old kung fu kwoon incorporated both striking/blocking/distance control from a standing position as well as striking or restraining from a ground situation (dunno if that is hard-core grappling but we used to call it 'ground-fighting'). But i would have to agree with 360, Hapkido is known for using both joint locks/manipulation and restraining strategies (don't know if it is hard-core grappling either. I would think that 'grappling' means start on the ground and end on the ground but I'm not sure) mixed with striking and stand-up fighting.
  2. He-man And 2D old-school side-scrolling platform classic video games (most often found on Genesis, NES, and SNES)
  3. Well I'm not Irish but I love wearing green (even tho green isn't even one of my favorite colors but my favorite shirt happens to be green) hehehehe Anyways this is late but Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone
  4. At my old kung fu school, there was a high school physics teacher there. He was really great to talk to. Btw my Spanish used to be muy bien but then I lost most of it. I intend to get it back sometime in the future.
  5. Ya, I was about to volunteer that. But the Mighty Mighty ****roaches doesn't have quite the same ring as Mighty Mighty Sharks  hehehehehehe [Edited by Admin: Please do not try to get around our word censors. 6. Hmmm the following kinda stand out: Jet Li vs. Billy Chow in Fist of Legend (end fight) Jackie Chan vs. Ken Lo in Drunken Master 2 (end fight) Jackie Chan vs. Benny Urquidez in Meals on Wheels (end fight) Majority or many of the fights in Prodigal Son Many many many old school kung fu theater fight scenes Many more old school 80's HK fight scenes that I can't think of or remember [ This Message was edited by: spinninggumby on 2002-03-17 23:47 ]
  7. Welll, it doesn't really matter to me what we name ourselves I will leave it up to the rest of my team.
  8. Welcome This is a great place to just talk about, ask for, or share ideas/advice or just a good laugh. See u around!
  9. I think different instructors or masters (even within the same federation such as WTF) will tell you different things, but I have been taught that it can go both ways. The top of the foot can usually be used for low targets (such as groin) while the ball can be used for the head and solar plexus and such. I would not be surprised if you heard otherwise from many many other people though
  10. Usually u can't go wrong with lots of complex carbohydrates (i.e. fiber, not simple sugar), fruits, vegetables, fat free yogurt, lowfat protein, and um I can't really think of any more. By the way it's a lot easier to tell people what to eat than to actually follow your own guidelines, LOL. I have a weakness for many many things. On a side note I have read that drinking or taking in some simple sugars (i.e. fruit juice or small candy bar) is somewhat beneficial after long periods of exercise in order to replace the glycogen in your muscles.
  11. Really inspirational
  12. I'll try it....
  13. Hi people I am interested to know if any of you here have had legitimate instruction (no matter how brief) in authentic Northern Shaolin kung fu? I would be curious to hear about your experiences and how it compares to other branched off kung fu styles in general. Thanks
  14. Well after 3 tries I got 578 keys per 2 minutes even tho I'm not sure what that means. At computer school I got up to 140 words per minute. I used to work in a law office and they had me do dictations and transcriptions all day. Bleh! Useless skills. Now I am actually going back to school so a lotta good that did me. 15. Yea exactly, you can really relate and be able to help others learn the material, but you don't have to be so competent yourself physically BUT, as I posted in another area on this forum, does this work the other way around? Is there really such a thing as a competent martial artist that can't teach or help others learn? Before everyone answers 'oh of course, duh duh duh' I dunno just try to think about it. If you were really a master of your craft and confident and superior in both understanding (the ideology and concepts) as well as the physical muscle memory portion, why would you not be able to pass on your knowledge and information? Unless you are antisocial or just hate talking to people or interacting with people (in which case you should not have tried to become a teacher in the first place, IMHO), I don't see how a true proficient in a certain m/a would not be able to explain, break down the steps, or identify with a student who is growing in the art. Just my two cents
  16. hi 360, criminal profiler, huh. I guess you are getting good training here at karateforums.com
  17. One of my old teachers taught me a simple trick that many people may already know. You just focus your eyes on a single point and let it stay at that point for the whole duration that you perform a certain technique. Perform each technique slowly (or as fast as you are comfortable) while burning your eyes into that same area (preferably somewhere that makes sense, such as a point in front of you as opposed to behind you). If you are talking about balance overall, I think just repetition makes perfect since your body will eventually get used to the movements and become more stable due to the engrainment of muscle memory. Hope this helps and welcome!
  18. Um, this might seem as kind of an unconventional or sacrilegious response but... Every time you don't feel like bowing, just take it as another opportunity to stretch and increase the flexibility in your hamstrings (if you bend ur knees slightly and lean down far enough), your tendons, or your lower back and spinal area.  _________________ Want to know if a man's ideologies are correct? 19. I remember Kung Fu, hehehehe. Every time you beat a boss guy then you got to climb the stairs to the next level. Remember those little guys that used to flip on top of you? LOL Ah, Street Fighter. That is like hi-tech and new school compared to a lot of the old stuff! Street Fighter was the beginning of refined, one-on-one fighting. What about Pitfighter? Even that was fairly new compared to Karate Champ or Kung Fu. Geez even at 22 u guys are making me feel so old. At least I won't hafta start looking into high-quality dentures until I hit 25.
  20. Ummm wow brain freeze. Sai Fights I am sure that the joke was really funny I just donta get it?? () Do you hafta know a lot about politics. Anyways don't bother explaining it haha I just can't seem to figure it out although partly I seem to think that I have missed something big here hehehehe
  21. Really? Wow at my school, it goes red first, then black, then yellow, then orange, then green, and then white, and then finally at the top you get to gray. ....just kidding (you guys knew that right?)
