Which part of the world does karate really belong to?
ncole_91 replied to Monkeymagic's topic in Karate
Definitely, Okinawa, Funakoshi learned his MA in Okinawa, but them was asked to perform some demonstration in Japan, then later moved to Japan and open a dojo in that country. Alot of stuff changed when Karate went to Japan, such as a belt ranking system, the judo uniforms were adopted as well. Therefore, the roots of “Karate” would be Okinawa, now all the MAs that formed into Karate, would have originated in India/China. I think this information is correct, I read it on the Internet, but there’s a lot of stuff you cannot trust anymore. -
I dont think so, my dojo is still going, i think its this sunday in Toronto....

karate in the family lineage
ncole_91 replied to kitsune_no_tama's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was the very first one, well i dad was a police officer, that is the closest any of my family did to fighting/MA -
When I started MA I didn't really tell anyone for the reasons mentioned. Now I just don’t care who knows, I mean I love MA, and it will always be a part of my life, so all the comments, "show me some moves, hiy-ah" I just ignore them. I do not tend to bring it up in subject, but if someone asks me some questions I would be more than happy to answer any questions. I also found out that quite a few people do MA, but they don't really take it as seriously.

Do you not need an amount of strength to become a Black Belt. I have heard of people's Black Belt tests that are like 5 hours of grueling work. You would have to spar other BB and their instructor, and their instructor was not taking it easy, they were going full out. I don't think a 7 year old could actually do this. Also, I don't think a 7 year old could understand the basics, it is one thing to just learn the moves, but they should now a whole bunch of applications for each strike, block or punch. Also, I think that you should have enough experience that you should be able to teach, and I personally do not think a 7 year old could teach a class properly. I don’t know if I am way off, but when I become a Black Belt, I want to earn it, and have to do and know all the things that I mentioned.

In our dojo, we have a 1 basic stance, punch and block, and then a bit of terminology before you get your white belt. I agree, even now just looking on my white belt test, I now think it was really easy because my skill level has gone up a lot in the past 6 months, but at the time I was extremely nervous, and all the techniques were extremely difficult for me. Not to mention all the pressure of having to do in front of the class, like a first impression. I also didn’t do to good on pre test, (the instructor asked me a few questions to make sure I was ready). But when I got my white belt, I was the MAN. It really gives you confidence, and I feel even more proud of myself for getting my yellow belt. Congratulation again and good luck hajime, I am sure you will do awesome.

I now how it feels, like your greatest person on earth. I just recently got my yellow belt, and most people would just think, who cares, not like its your BB. I think only MAtists will ever feel the accomplishment of something small or big, even if it was a White Belt, Yellow Belt or Black Belt.

I thought it was going to show, but i underestimated the quality and you could not even notice it. Thanks

Okay, so I am starting sparring, so i decided i should probably go buy a jock, and I did that. Oh my Gosh, I do not know if anybody else experienced this, but they are sooo uncomfortable. I mean they don’t stay in place when i kick or stretch and when I try to readjust it, I look like an idiot. Do you get used to it, or anyone have any tips, god its annoying.

Go to http://www.trickstutorials.com There are alot of tutorials or backflips, front flips and pretty much the tricking side of martial arts.

Sure, I would not have expected you to devote all of your time to this, just when you have a little bit of free time. I will be patient, and thank you again.

It is a huge debate, I would personally like to start using a makiwara, and conditioning my body, but I know I will have to start out very very slowly and then slowly progress.

I am in a Shotokan School. I started about 6 months ago so i dont know too many "advanced" moves. Yeah i would like a mix of all them, if you have them. I find it easier to practice at home, hwen someone is like there watching you and pushing you (the audio file). Thats is you understand.

We don’t use the same terminology, as you. I know that zuki would be a type of punch, then 1 or 2 or 3. Kihon means basic, Geri is some type of kick, but there is a lot I do not know. Anyways, thanks.

lol, I mean like in class when your instructor says go into front stance, then lunge punch, then starts to count. I thought I would just ask before I made my own. Thanks

Hello everyone, I was reading through some threads and they talked about recording yourself or recording a class or something like that for you to train at home. I was wondering if anyone had/would like to make some of these training sound files, so I could burn them onto a CD and play them on a CD player and have a guide of what I can practice. It can be about Martial Arts, or even just like fitness. I also saw some other people asking for these types of files. Thanks, Nicolas
