well, there isn't many Thai-boxers in the same weight category as Mike Tyson. And Mike probably would fair pretty well, if he learned how to defend against kicks, knees and elbows. Then again, Mike is such a dirty fighter (in boxing), he might already know that . -

I recieved most of my training in Virginia Beach under Frank Cucci. Inosanto would come around all the time to give seminars, and the last time he certified me to apprentice instructor. Master Chai also did seminars at Frank's school As for Brazillian Jujitsu I'm learning with Tom Proctor right now and Pedro Sauer comes to give seminars. I was just in Salt Lake City a couple weeks ago for a 3day cam at Pedro's school. I've heard of Doce Pares, but haven't been exposed. I'm also training in Silat with a guy named Vince Perez-Mazolla, who was a staff instructor at Inosanot Academy. He also trained with Paul Detuaour (sp) in france and is certified to teach by Herman Suwanda. People did jump on the BJJ band wagon right after Royce did his thing. Royce wasn't picked because he is the best BJJ player. He was picked because he was the smallest and the Gracies wanted to prove that with their system, the smaller guy can win. Sakuraba is a great fighter, but if you don't think that BJJ changed the strategy of his game, you're crazy. The techniques probably came from Shootwrestling. I know Eric Paulsen showed us how submissions are modified for pro-wrestling in japan and he's a shootwrestler. -

Well.. a purse can be used to lock joints, break bones and choke. It's very nasty when you actually do it. Using flexible material to choke with works so much faster than trying to choke a person empty handed. Also, there are many weapon disarming techniques that I'm learning with the clothing. Sometimes the clothing is just used as a distraction to the face in order to set-up a really hard kick.

well.. BJJ doesn't realy on mass and strength. You are mistaken there. Anyway, I can understand your arguement. Many people in the MMA are truly learning just for the ring sport and aren't interested in self-defense. But, learning the ring sport of MMA does teach them pretty effective self-defense against unarmed opponents. Ground fighting isn't and wasn't nearly as sophisticated as it is today. This is the influence of BJJ. They are the most effective at it, but then again, that's pretty much all they do in that art. I feel if it takes years of training to get a technique or series of techniques to really work for self-defense.. then something is wrong. That's my opinion.. I want to defend myself now, in-case something happens tomorrow. I can't tell a mugger" can you wait 3 years until I am good at kung-fu?". -
Thrust punch may not sound as cool, but at least I know what you are talking about now.

I am training right now with the use of the Saraong and Malong, indonesian skirts. It is pretty awesome learning how to use clothing as weapons. It can be very practical also, purses can become deadly weapons using these techniques, as well as belts and skirts. What would be more embarrassing than getting beat up by a person that just got naked?

i learned the spinning axe kick today :)
thaiboxerken replied to F-S-K's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yea, the best time to do the spinning kicks is right after you KO your opponent with good solid basics. Get the job done first, then show off. -

Sakuraba isn't just a wrestler. He's a submission fighter. He actually learned more than just how to pin a person. Oh, and the amount of people training in groundwork now is pretty much because of BJJ. AS for coleman and severn.... they really don't use much technique to win fights, they are just BIG. -
skipping ranks
thaiboxerken replied to dreamer38f's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
sometimes when a person comes from a different school or association that does the same martial art, they are started at white-belt and pretty much have to prove themselves before attaining the equivalent rank of their old school. They can't just take anyone's word for it, or even certificates anymore. Too many McDojo's out there. -
lets go korean stylist
thaiboxerken replied to iamrushman's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts

Well if I'm ever in Georgia on business, I'll let ya know. We can train together and have fun.

I'm sorry of I'm harsh in my opinions. I'm just not a "politically correct" type of person. I speak my mind and let people know my opinions straight. When I say that I doubt you know more than me, I really meant that you may know different ways but the principles are probably just the same. I've trained in many martial arts and found much of the same techniques in all of them. Some martial arts don't get my respect because they teach poor things that can get a person really hurt. This is how I feel about most ( I said most, not all ) traditional karate schools in the USA. Many of these places are there just to make a quick buck, but almost ALL of them say that it's the other schools that are "McDojo's" and not theirs. Anyway, I'm open minded and train with anyone that wants to train with me. I have trained with other people in their karate schools and have found that it doesn't suit what I feel is a good way to train. When they train with me, though, they get hooked and are amazed at what I teach and train in. Your system of martial arts is probably a good one but I don't know. I'm just having fun stating my honest opinions on the forum. It makes people mad? Oh well, if we all agreed on everything and were all "PC" then it would be a pretty boring world.

slight pain when i kick (details inside)
thaiboxerken replied to F-S-K's topic in Health and Fitness
Or you can just quit kicking like that. Training should be hard work but never something that will injure you. -
I dunno. I still don't believe it exists. What people call "ki" is what I think is just proper body mechanics and leverage. That is my opinion.

I'm not sure the names, but one guy is passed on and the other doesn't teach anymore. But if you want to train in only "JKD" then you can go to a nucleus guy that will try to teach you "original" JKD. I feel these guys don't understand the whole concept of JKD as being a dynamic and evolving art. If you want to fight like Bruce, then go ahead and try, you'll have a 1% chance of getting what worked for him to work for you. You might be able to find a concepts teacher that will teach you only "JKD". But don't ask for JKD, ask for Jun Fan Gung Fu. JKD would be the philosophy of the fighting, Jun Fan would be Bruce's "original" system.

LOL. Well.. a person can practice punching the air for 30 years, doesn't mean that person knows any more about martial arts than anyone else. I can create my own style/system too, all it takes is a cool oriental-sounding name. I'm not doubting that you know your martial arts, I'm just saying you don't know anything about what I do in training. Discipline is one thing.. being anal-retentive is another.

Dan Inosanto is the main connection. Inosanto is one of 3 people actually certified by Lee to teach "JKD". Prior to that, Inosanto was well versed in Kali, Silat and many other arts. JKD concepts people tend to learn the other arts in conjuction with Jun Fan Kung Fu. There are many "original JKD" or "Nucleus" students that think that we shouldn't train in Kali or Silat to add to our "JKD" but I don't care. It works and it works well.

There are many other systems out there that don't train in "kata". So I still have many other options. I just don't think Kata is a good training method at all. You may know more than me in martial art, but I doubt it.. I just know different things, not less.
