Kicking off with the lead leg has many advantages. Too many to list....but I kick with the lead leg alot. It is very very fast, and can surprise your opponant. A lead leg kick to the groin are my favorite techs to use in sparring, competition, or on the street. Using the rear leg to kick is good, but its "telegraphed" and a seasoned fighter will see it coming, but that kick has alot of power in it...so it will be difficult to stop. As long as both kicks are low, and not high...it is a highly effective kick to use...whatever your situation. Hasta!! Slider

A black belt means simply 1 thing: You have mastered the "basics" for your paticular system. When my instructor presented me my black belt, he ended the ceremony with these words "ok Ryan...are you ready to learn karate now?" Imagine my suprise Hasta!! Slider

UFC is losing popularity....although it shows the "reality fighting" to a mass audience, people like TANK Abbott are ruining the UFC's already fragile reputation. Theres no point to it anymore. I am not interested in spending $40 to watch a bunch of fat guys with no teeth and bad hygene roll around on the mat. I'll stick to watching or training with the BJJ greats first hand. Hasta!! We have the Klingon Batleths through my business KoldSteel Enterprises. As far as the kata for that is concerned....it is something that you would have to use your imagination for. I would love to see a good showmanship routine that employs a batleth....that would be entertaining non the less. Try it, maybe I'll see ya on the tournament circuit...ya never know. Hasta!! I agree that things have changed as far as fighting is cncerned. I see the need for learning how to fight on he ground. WHAT IF YOU END UP THERE? THEN WHAT? My life is far too valuable to me to be closed minded. BJJ has been in my fighting arsenal since 1998...I had been studying Kenpo Karate 10 years at that point. I am now a confident fighter both on my feet, and on the ground. Hasta!! Slider 2nd Degree Black Belt Ed Parker Kenpo Karate

I have been to Billy Blank's Tai Bo center in Sherman Oaks California...I have personally seen him advise his students on a regular basis NOT TO USE CARDIO TECHNIQES ON THE STREET. It depends on the instructor....I advise teaching a student properly as well. Most people that take cardio classes do it for that reason...CARDIO. Hasta!! Hey guys, I cannot emphisize the training with other styles enough. Katas from other styles are great..especially if you are a competitor. I have many friends that train in kenpo cuz they love the movment, and fluidity of motion that it offers. I myself am learning Basai Sho for competition on the NBL karate circuit. I will compete in the Traditional Kata division. Training in other styles is not only encouraged by myself...but I require it as well of ALL my students. It will broaden their horizons. I was a shining example of wanting to train in other styles to further my unquenching need for knowledge...my instructor told me to choose between that, and my school...I never trained with him again. You wont be able to keep a young mind from learning...dont try. Hasta!! Slider 2nd Degree Black Belt Ed Parker Kenpo Karate

I have some bacground in Kenjitsu....it is better than Kendo cuz its more combative. Its interesting cuz it teaches you the "samurai way of life" as well as teaching the drawing and cutting portin of the art. This is basically the art that th samurai warrior trained in, and its very, very fascinating to learn. Theres alot of listings on the internet yellow pages..look em up!! Hasta!! Hey guys, I would actually advise against repetitive kicking personally. Against a seasoned street fighter, they will get on the inside of you quickly, and you will be in trouble. Try using your kicks to get on the inside of an attacker...then use hands to tear him to pieces. I would advise some ground fighting training as well....this will enhance your arsenal should the fight ever go to the ground(95% of fights go to the ground within 30 sec into the fight). High kicking serves little purpose in a street situation. Keep em low, this will enhance your power. The higher the kick, the more you smear the power in the kick. Hasta!! You can see an example of one of my swords..its located at: http://hometown.aol.com/koldsteel504/myhomepage/profile.html wejust switch out the steel blades for our aluminum ones. The result is a sword that looks as beatiful and as strong as a steel blade, but without the cumbersome weight. Hasta!!

The weapons are VERY durable. They are manufactured for movie companies. Thy are esigned mainly for training and competition though..not for banging against each other. But they will be well worth your time...believe me. The swrds are "FEATHER" light....I personally use a Highlander sword with one of my blades on it....its light as hell, and looks good when I compete Any more questions? Competitions
Slider replied to Tobias_Reece's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Hey guys, Competitions are GREAT! Most competitions are well run, and the staff is quite professional. I highly reccomend the NASKA, or NBL/SKIL tournament circuits myself. No matter what, there will be some funky experiances you will have in the coarse of competiting, but its all in good fun. Depends on how you look at it. Competitions are meant to be fun. Try not to look at them in a bad light if you haven't been to one, or simply didnt bother to compete as much for whatever reason. Not really fair to the tournament, and it competitors. One of the best ways to meet people, and travel is by way of karate competiton, and is an excellent way to meet your fellow martial artists as well. I highly reccomend it, and I encourage ALL my students to compete. Hasta!! Slider http://www.spooxdl.homestead.com/files/slider3.jpg -
"American" kenpo karate was founded by Ed Parker in 1959. I personally have been a student of kenpo for the last 13 years, and I currently teach it in Southern California. It is by far one of the most interesting, and mind altering of all the martial arts. It teaches you to think "practical", not traditional. Basically in a nutshell...the art is always changing. I recommend Ed Parkers series of books called "Inifinite Insights on Kenpo" Hasta!! Ryan
