I agree with Angus mostly, except for the fact that he is sort of wandering back and forth between arts (or that's how he makes it seem). I train in two arts, one a lot more than the other (tae kwon do 3-4 times a week, BJJ once a week just to start off), and I think it's already (after only 3 BJJ classes) making more well-rounded. The only real problem is that in tae kwon do they tell you "stay on your feet, if you fall stand back up," and in BJJ it's all, "the mat is your best friend," and stuff. besides that I think cross-training is excellent, and it keeps one art from getting a little tedious.

They are contesting....figures. That's why some "sports" ( or so-called ) are so hard to compete in - a lot of the true champions get cheated or jerked by politics. Sports that are judged by a panel are the hardest to regulate.

I'm sick of Tae kwon do.

I was meaning all these things after you've rolled for a little while (before standing up you should know how to last on the floor for a few minutes) and after a while, if you see an opening and are ABLE to get into your guard, which you should (see, I started somewhere in the middle of a lesson or soemthing, so now we're all confused), you can try to stand up. -
Ok...let me start with a little preamble. I have ALWAYS hated watching figure skating, becasue of judges biases, the fact that I knew nothing about it, the fact that a lot of the athletes anoy me, etc. Well, last night at around 10:30 I turned on Channel 4, and there was the Women's figure skating, the most talked about event. Since I was not tired (another damned insomnia bout), I decided to watch. Well, I just wanted to say that I thought Sarah Hughes put on one of the best performances IN ANY SPORT, EVER, and though I'm no qualified judge I was still amazed. I think the judges did a fantastic judge, though I think Michelle Kwan messed up a lot and her routine didn't seem as complicated as some of the others. You thoughts?

If you start at the hip, you are more likely to remember to turn your hips, therefore getting more power from the technique. Also, it reinforces keeping in the correct stances. Our instructor always puts out a balance by reminding us to keep our hands up in a real fight, etc.

If you get to be sitting up, put on leg under the other knee, lift all your weight on to one of your arms, and step BACK quickly. Also, yu can get into four point stance and practice replacements, replacing your left hand with your right foor, and so on. Always have someone in a good guard (pretty far away), or get them down too (learning a few basic takedowns is a good idea) before you stand up. And always step BACK....so you don't stand up to a clean punch in your face. I know I'm not good at explaining it, so asking in the jiu-jitsu forum maybe (I'm a total BJJ newbie) might be a good idea. -
Interesting name.

I'm still trying to figure this one out also. Well, it's simple. If you roll onto your stomach, you give the person your back - not good. They have the back of your head along with all the places on your body YOU can't see...and you can get someone with a choke VERY easily if they are on their stomach. -
Age and the Martial Arts
three60roundhouse replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I know that telling a six year old who is passionate about the martial arts that it'll take him twelve years to be at black belt while a sixteen year old who starts only needs four or five might turn many a future star off. -
should young kids do a martial art?
three60roundhouse replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Hmmm....well, I assist at my school a lot, and we have what we call the "tiny tot" classes - these kids are age four, and some immature five year olds are also in this class. They cover very basic kicking and punching, but for the most part it's fun and games...They start off with a white belt, and instead of prograssing through belts, they get colorful tape stripes on the belt to indicate getting better. Some kids stay in the tot class for a long time, but mostly the five year olds are transfered into the more serious training. I think we should be teaching the young kids that the martial arts are fun - while not pushing (classes are only 30 minutes long) them or giving away belts. -

three60roundhouse replied to mastertae's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Yes....this is what we have been telling the TKD bashers for a long time....just becasue we like to show off our acrobatic yet almost useless flying and spinning kicks, we do have a lot of practicality that is overlooked. A lot of studios even teach grappling nowadays! -
Age and the Martial Arts
three60roundhouse replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Here's another thing: the junior black belt. So many studios (including mine) are awarding these to children UNDER age 16 when they've met all the requirements for a first dan, but are not emotionally mature enough for a black belt. The belt is half black and half red, and the junior black belts learn the same forms and stuff as the regular first dans, but they have to re-test for their black belts at age 16. I think this system is good....it shows the child that they HAVE accompolished a lot, but also reminds them that they aren't as mature as the older black belts and that they still have a long way to go. -
Why do you study?
three60roundhouse replied to ramcalgary's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, it's along story that begins three years ago. My ten year old brother, Sean, was the middle child of five, and was very sensitive and emotional (in other words, a big sissy. Don't worry, not there are six kids, and he got over the middle kid thing). A teacher suggested martial arts for him as a good activity to build confidence. My mom looked around for a school, and Mr. Stevens, my instructor, had just moved his dojang very close to us. My mom met him and thought he was nice, and we knew nothing about martial arts choosing schools (in other words WE WErE SOOOOO LUCKY). Sean started and then my brother Mike (13) and my brother Ry ( finally complained her into buying them classes too, and they moved up to high white and I was tired of sitting there watching them do classes, so I started and I have been doping it ever since. We have all pretty much evened out, we are all the same rank (testing for red belt in March0, and even though some of us are a little better, we all train together and help each other out, so we can pull through and MAYBE someday become the first family of four black belts from Stevens Martial Arts. -

if they get you to the ground in a self defense situation....don't roll onto your stomach. -
I've never seen a nunchuck like that, but then again we aren't even allowed to use wooden ones in my tae kwon do dojang until black belt(I have foam covered ones). I have a question, though - wouldn't these kind of tapered nunchaku give you a hard time when spinning them over your hands? [ This Message was edited by: three60roundhouse on 2002-02-20 10:10 ]

In class, the month is separated into "weeks" - where we cover all the basics but keep focused on one thing...There's "sparring" week, weapons week, rolls/breakfalls/ground defense week, forms week, etc. When we have forms week we probably do the form 3-4 times in the class and if it isn't forms week only once or twice, though I do it many times at home on my own.

What I have that you don't. There are two of them, and boys think it's funny to try to get a look at them while grappling. Mind you, that's before i kick their butts. -
There have been many disputes over the years as to at what age the black belt should be given to kids, at what age kids start training, at what age they are mature enough to grasp the meaning of the martial arts, etc. Hmmm....I don't know. What's a "kid"? And aren't some kids more mature than some adults, and vice versa? What do you guys think?
