  1. You're never too old - don't let age stop you!
  2. Okay, so maybe I'm half-crazy then - it at least came from horses...
  3. That's why I'm glad to take an American System. We have several masters in which we put stock - unfortunately, with Ed Parker's death, suddenly everybody was a grandmaster - as far as I know, neither of the 10th dans with which our school is associated calls themself a "grandmaster", though they may have earned that title. One of them, Richard "Huk" Planas, comes around every three months or so to do a seminar or a test. He's really scary at first, but turns out to be a nice guy, after all. The other one, Frank Trejo, comes maybe once a year, sometimes less - we're not so much affiliated with him as with Planas, as far as I know. Since their seminars are usually on Saturday, and for religious reasons, I don't train on Saturdays, I usually get to hook up with private lessons on the Friday before - makes me feel special.
  4. Oh, yeah - my belt isn't the highest quality, probably, but it's cloth, and thick. I got it that way because I knew I wasn't getting a promotion any time soon, and I want it to last me for...possibly seven or eight years.
  5. I was actually just being a goofball - there's a real story about that?
  6. Oh, and I agree with Jaymac...THREE TIMES!
  7. When two people flirt while in a group, it can make everybody else in the group feel very uncomfortable, and even angry - sometimes angry enough to project their negative other people flirting experiences on some other poor girl on a karate forum...*inhale* Don't ask. I think it would do you and everybody else in your class good if you could restrain yourselves. That doesn't mean ignore him in class, or don't talk to him, but...just keep it like you were friends. As a teenager, I know that may be hard, but a dojo is not a place that you go on a date, or to force your personal life on the other karateka. In my humble opinion.
  8. I can't believe I haven't posted on this thread before...I've always assumed I already have... Name: Peter Rank: First Dan - American Kenpo White Belt - Danzan Ryu Ju Jitsu Know Random Kata/techniques from - Wushu/Eagle Claw
  9. Oh! Oh! What now!!? Maybe Parkerlineage isn't so crazy...
  10. That can actually be very effective, if applied with ancient Japanese secrets.
  11. Well, I'm 18, and since I wear my belt so much (20+ hours a week), it's fraying quite a bit around the knot, sides, and back - so by the time I'm 25, it may be rather frayed. Of course, I will have been a black belt for 10 years, by then, so I don't think it's that ridiculous, under the right circumstances.
  12. It was never my intent to put down on the Karate Kid, and I apologize if anyone took it that way.
  13. Hm...I may watch it, just to see how it is.
  14. We use it messing around, sometimes, as a joke when somebody tries some move that's way too flashy and has a 99.9% chance of never working, ever.
  15. Something told me you were going to do that...
  16. I was told that the horse stance came from soldiers learning to fight from horseback, so that all they could use was their arms. Horse stances and cat stances are transitional moves, and the names just make more sense than "stance where your legs are spread out slightly more than shoulder width and feet pointing straight ahead so that you can train just your arms", and "stance where one foot is kind of on its toes and your weight is 90/10".
  17. Interesting perspective - perhaps I'll get my next dan with premade holes, and maybe an embroidered skull...hehe
  18. I agree that, eventually, a student will be able to take what they want and formulate their own ideas - but until that point, the instructor has to begin those thought processes for them, and guide them on their path.
  19. Yes, JJJ - Danzan-Ryu, which is cool, because Ed Parker's lineage traces back through Okazaki. I don't know exactly what they do, but their classes are two hours long, so I'm guessing I'll get to learn a lot. I wish I trained in Pasadena (though I have trained with Master Trejo, who I believe operates the Pasadena school)! No, my current Kenpo school is in Redding, CA, and my new ju jitsu school is in Calistoga, CA, where I'll be moving for college.
  20. I found an academy just a few minutes away from the college to which I am going!! I e-mailed the instructor, and googled him, and checked out his lineage...and he looks good! I'm so thrilled - I've been trying to find a good jujitsu academy forever!
  21. hahahaha...I love it! Someday, I will write/make one of those, I hope.
  22. I WANT TO DO THIS!! But it's not Martial Arts. It's very good gymnastics, which I love, but not MA.
  23. I believe the major martial arts in the karate kid movies were: Cinematography Ryu - The art of having the camera make you look good. Ignorance Do - The art of relying on the fact that virtually nobody knows martial arts. Narrativeimprobability Fu - The art of making script writers let you win I happen to have a black belt in all of those - although, in my only MA film (it's a 9 minute ninja movie that we made for an English project), I was the bad guy, so I had to die. Therefore, my friend is really better than I am in Narrativeimprobability Fu. But I'm practicing!
