I have an odd situation here
parkerlineage replied to BLueDevil's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Should've moved on when he went to jail. Drop him like he's hot, and find a new instructor. -
Good idea! I'll try that...

Really really really really roughly, yes. If enough people want me too, I'll put my senior paper up on here - it's a several page history of "American" Kenpo.
-
I use the "glue" metaphor...have him "glue" his front hand to his head, and his back hand to his elbow (or whatever your fighting stance is), and then remind him continually to "keep the glue!" A slight tap while he's wearing a helmet is okay, but keep it to a minimum - all that seems to teach is fear of getting hit.

I should've thought of this sooner, but I'm sick of working out by myself, and I was wondering if there was anybody who had a school in the Washington DC area that wouldn't mind me working out with them this week. I have no gi, or belt, but I do have workout clothes. I honestly don't care what style, as long as you don't care. Just a thought that I wish I had come up with sooner...

Parker/Planas Lineage 4evah!! (or something) My instructor is a longtime student of Master Planas. I don't want to offend anybody or start an argument, so in my humble opinion, (thanks Sohan ), Master Planas is the best way to go. I mean, the guy practically wrote the system, and he knows it better than anybody else out there. In my opinion.

hypothetical weapons tournament, what would you use?
parkerlineage replied to alsey's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Yeah, me, too (in terms of cash). -
Straight legged. I don't think a chamber ads any power to it, does it? Seeing as a chamber from the position where we crescent kick is essentailly wasted motion...perhaps it varies in our styles. Oh. I take it back a little. When I spin or flying spin, I do chamber them, to get better torque. But from standing, it's straight.

So, essentially, I'm getting that I may as well forget headgear, and tell everybody to be careful - not no head contact, but careful head contact. And have good insurance.
-
I use the backfist to rattle people's brains in their heads, and jabs to distract them so that I can throw a hard right. I find jabs a little faster, and backunckles (as we call them) waaay more powerful. But I think it may change for the individual and the style.

I should've gone with A. I will certainly try to think a little more before it happens next time. I was fairly confident that the guy was alone, but I don't even want to think about what would happen if I fought back against a gangbanger. Seeing as my experience with drinking or people who have been drinking is...let's see...nothing...I didn't know this, or at least it never entered my mind. So I will remember that next time. On the other hand, I frequently don't know what day of the week it is... Time frame exaggeration aside, how else would you like me to kick? Let him know that I was going to do it, and then do it blind with no principle behind it? -
Tested for Blue today and passed!!

hehe...what's the first word in the phrase, "Devil's advocate?" It's good to push on occasion - made me make myself and everyone else certain that I didn't do it for fun, right? -
Here I come to...offer not specifically asked for but previously warned of information!! American Kenpo and Japanese Kenpo are not the same. American Kenpo is Chinese based, with roots in Japanese Karate and Japanese Ju Jitsu, but they are not 100% similar. Possibly easy to transfer - I wouldn't know exactly. Who was your instructor? I may know (of) him or her. Even if you're not planning to be with the same instructor - and especially if you aren't, actually - you kind of have to be careful who claims to have been "under Parker." What SGM Parker started was a marketable self defense system, that, though partially designed to be marketable, is just as effective as anything else out there. Now, becaue he realized the importance of politics in anything, he would teach just about anyone - but not always on the same level. Those in which he saw real talent and real commitment, he taught - others, he only...instructed. Outlined, perhaps. In addition, after SGM Parker died, everybody was a 'direct student' of his; nearly everyone - ranging from people who had been to a seminar of his, or had a class with him, to those who had never even seen him - claimed to have trained with him. And there was really nobody to argue, and no reason to get in heated debates over who was real and who wasn't - one's Kenpo speaks for one's self. So, back to my point...um...oh, yeah - not everybody who says they were 'under Parker' was under Parker. You may want to check people's history, and even check it on other websites than their own, too. Is it the real deal? The short answer: Yes. The long answer: Yes, definetly. Ask anybody who's seen real Chinese Kenpo (what Parker originally called it) in action, by somebody who really trained with Parker, or trains with somebody who really trained with Parker and hasn't watered it down, and so on, and they'll tell you it is. Hope that's helpful! PS. Bluedevil, I'm not in any way suggesting that your teacher isn't legit, so please don't take it that way.

parkerlineage replied to parkerlineage's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wow...hadn't thought of that... I believe the proper answer to both of your questions are...um...HECK NO!!! I want to avoid fighting at all costs, especially in a disadvantaged place such as the narrow entryway of a bus, especially against someone who may not feel my blows, like a drunk person, especially in a big city, where violent crime is common, especially - let me emphasize this one - especially when my best friend could get seriously hurt by my actions or inactions. I'm almost appalled that you suggest that, but I'll take it as curiosity and harmless suggestion. If I really wanted to fight, I would - alone - find a street thug - alone - in a place where I had lots of room to move, and then start it with the first blow. Darn, that was totally what I was going to say, too. -

^Harsh, but logical. I like it! I will certainly do that, and stick to it. In fact, do you mind if I pretty much quote that verbatim in the classes I teach? -
Well, here I am in big, scary, Washington DC... I come from a rather small town with an even smaller town mentality, where I lead a ridiculously sheltered life, in comparison with the general population of big cities. After my incident with the crazy guy in Home Depot (thread- http://karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=27223), I realized that I needed to change my mentality on when to fight back. I let people go too far, and if they were really going to hit me, they may have been able to hit me before I could respond. Especially since DC has a high crime rate (from what I hear), and because I'm here with my best friend (a 5', feisty but tiny girl), I decided I needed to be prepared to do whatever I thought necessary to maintain control of threatening situations - even more so because her mom gave me the mandate to be her daughter's "bodyguard." Anywho, we were getting on the bus, and there was this drunk guy rambling at these two other guys, who finally got him to go away. I had just happened to turn my head, and unfortunately made eye contact with him, and sure enough, he started heading over toward the two of us. I gave my friend a little nudge to move her a step toward the bus, and stepped between her and this guy. She got on, and I started to get on, thanking my lucky stars that he hadn't reached us in time. And then, as my foot hit the first step, he grabbed my arm. I tell you, it was going to be absolutely beautiful. I leaned my weight forward and jerked my arm from his grip, my head whipped around, my leg raised up and chambered, my hips torqued, and if he had stayed for half a second longer, my heel-hook to the temple - which is dojo renowned for leaving throbbing headaches when pulled - would have left him unconscious on the sidewalk. Lucky for him, the doors of the bus shut behind me, nearly pinning my leg in them, but I pulled back in time. I had the adrenaline surge again, but this time, it was more controlled, like I knew it was coming, and was ready to handle it. Would it have been right, to lay out some drunk who mistakenly grabbed someone he shouldn't have? I don't know (that's kind of my question). Would I have felt remorse - I doubt it. Chivalry is something I try to keep in the forefront of my training, and if somebody threatens to hurt my friends, let alone my girl friends, let alone my best friend - you bet they're going down. Is this the right state of my to be in, or am I paranoid? Would it have been okay if I had leveled him, or at least stunned him, with a kick like that? What do you guys think...
