it really ticked me off when he said that. yes i do agree that you need the muscle first, but if they hit hard enough ribs will break. strongs ribs strong muscles behind the ribs and your good to go. many practice this. iron man training can be done all over the body. if you become serious about it, most people would end up doing this. muay thai guys do it to shins, boxers to knuckles and there is certain styles out there that does it too the whole body.

umm dont you guys have insaine suicide rate though?

best book for grappling
dear john replied to dear john's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
thankyou but i have decided that for now i am going to hold off on any book that talks about specific techniques and all. recently i have been reading books about philosiphy of martial arts and life. this seems to be helping with my MA's more than anything. -
every person i have ever talked to, from wing chun to jujitsu to taekwondo to boxers. they all say that it is the worst kind of punch to throw. so why in the world do you see it nearly 75% of the time in the UFC no holds bar competitions? if you watch the video "UFC's greatest knockouts", you will see a good 75% of the guys who did the punching throw these heymakers. i thought they were suppose to be the most skilled fighters alive. any comments as to why these so called horrible techniques are working?

okay so i kinda forgot to ask about Dave Mcneil but my officail answer for the name thing was that professor learned things from all around and decided to add the name in japanese because he realized that what he was teaching was something more the Dan Zan Ryu and to call it just that would be missleading. this is his own personal style. all of dan zan ryu and the additions of his own stuff brought from outside it. the name was never tranlated from tibetan to japanese, although we have tibetan style and philosiphy the name was simply added to show that there is a difference in style. from what i have heard, the tibetan part adds a certain part of jujitsu that Dan Zan Ryu lacked. so i guess yes it is believed to have made the art better, more effiecent.

Help me prove someone wrong

JKD is supposed to have everything in it. under bruce lees philosiphy, to have anything less would be againsnt what JKD was about. bruce lee believed that a set type of moves or specific techniques were very limiting when it comes to real fighting. you must know your self and you your opponent. with that in mind. almost anyone who is all about combat MA's can teach JKD. at least in my opinion. i could be wrong though. and if you really get into bruce lee's ideals and philosiphies he would never tell someone that they are not allowed to teach JKD. that is what this guy is implying when he says bruce only authorized one person to teach JKD. JKD is for everyone, a way of life, like Morieh in aikido. -
ill take 1.wing chun 2. bjj 3.Dan Zan ryu 4. aikido 5. judo 6.iron man trainig yes lots of soft stuff but its who i am.

What Percentage Make it to Black Belt?
dear john replied to TMAA's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well i am one of 2 and it looks like i will be one of one soon enough. so there you have it. -
yes iit has gotten me into little trouble in the past but i have never seen anyone killed because they looked at somebody wrong

you are new. most new people are going to be looked at as an outsider. you should remember though, eventuallyu you will no longer be new. after a while they might warm up to you. but if they dont and you are always stuck on the outside, i wouldnt stop going just because of that. look at the system. is it any good? are the teachers good teachers? what type of style is this dojo about?
-
The Black Belt usually takes 5-6 years of rigorous training to achieve, and the test requires a demonstration of everything learned. Generally, it takes an entire day, and those who undergo the test leave knowing they can apply their skills competently in the most adverse of circumstances. Sort of like the Shao Lin Temple! i changed the color and size to highlight what i am talking about how can he make this statement unless he throws them into a live fight. his testing practices may be hard but no amount of physical stress can prepare you for a fight.

the art is basically japanese, but professor has spent some time studying tibetan MA's and alot od philosiphy. that is what we have most from tibetan, philosiphy. we even have some guy from tibet, he was in the newspaper and everything. he teaches old style yoga. i should be seeing him tommorrow but no promises.

what in the world is vitamin-S -
when i was still in highschool. one day early in the morning i was walking to school and i glanced to the right and i saw this guy staring at me. it was clear at first sight that he had a problem with me. it was strange though, he was almost 200 feet away, i couldnt see is face, but the eyes were clear as day. he was in the passenger side of a car. we continued this stare for a few seconds with him seeming to get madder and madder. at one point half his body was out the window of the car while it was moving, he was aparently making arm movements slapping his chest.when he started doing this i dropped my bag put my hands in my pockets and continued to stare. there was a red light ahead, they stopped and the guy kept at it with the chest thing. he was yelling stuff too but i couldnt hear it, he was too far away. eventually the car had to go and we broke eye contact when the car turned a corner. this guy was literally going nuts in this car. the whole time he was doing this, i could only think of how funny he was. such anger i look back and wonder what was going through his head, did he think that he was really that scary, to intimidate somebody from over 200 feet away. the scariest person i ever met was a guy in my old neighborhood. he could stare anybody down. he always had a problem with me. he liked to scare me evry time he saw me. it was funny though. he hated it most when somebody looked him in the eyes. every time i saw him i had to make eye contact with him, just to pi@# him off. i remember one time he was going up a hill with his bike and i starred at him waiting for him to look at me so i could look away, but he never looked at me. a complete stare and he didnt even glance, it kinda made me mad. so when he was gone i went on my marry way down the hill. i made one last look behind me before i kept going and saw him looking through a bush starring at me. he knew i was starring but he knew how much i knew he hated it. but still he knew. life is funny

you could try the whole fish thing. fish fats are pretty healthy for you if you are trying to gain a pound or two the healthy way. you should remember the basic concept of gaining wieght. you have to store more than you burn off. if you burn 2000 calories a day, eat 2500. i really would try to stay away from foods that have saturated fat and sugar else is fair game. if you are really serious, talk to your doc. ask him if he could prescribe about a month supply of steroids. despite what you have heard steroids arent that bad for you. like most things you must not abuse them, like dumb people do. steroids will increase your bodies ability to gain muscle mass and after you stop taking them, your metabolism will slow down. and you will gain more weight. talk to your doc before you do anything this serious though. he will know what to do. -
How long did it take for your black belt
dear john replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
3.5 years is required for WTF. i personally could get it with 2 years because i basically live there. i have been doing it a year. my school is set up so you cant really move ahead fast even if you are ready. -
before you work out is a good time for light stretching but if you really want to some progress then you should find about an hour or so once or twice a week to stretch. studies have shown that stretching for long periods of time everyday is no better than doing it once a week, but if you dont keep up with light stretches your long stretch is pretty pointless. but then again everyones body is different. i read this in a book and it seems to hold pretty true to me. find what works for you.

i am not for sure how it might have happened but it happened none the less. if it is injured, training with it and doing exercises that hurt to do will only make it worse.

i visited a pretty decend MA school, but it costs $190 a month, if you ask me the is pretty McDojo'ish but it was still a good school. i knew the owners son, i could go for considerably less, but its too far to travel. could be greed or maybe they dont want that many students. his class was really small, like only 15 students.
