I agree with Sai, a little dose of humility will go a long way in this case.

Well, thanks for clearing that up. I thought I was going senile. I was in a prolific posting mood at the time. I have had trouble with loading up this site especially on mondays and in the mornings does this happen to anyone else? It happens in both of my locations.

1. More power!!! (this one is followed by a grunt like home improvement) True 2. Faster! You are mistaken my hands are most certainly quicker. 3. Better Range a step or reverse punch will cover alot more ground the further you overextend a kick the less power. A kicker can also be jammed just stay in close where he cant extend his legs. 6. People dont see them as quickly because the movement starts below the waist. (hands start at the hand if your good or at the shoulder if your like most americans) I find most kicks easier to pick up that hand techniques. The shifting of weight and other telegraphing makes it easier. 7. I throw kicks, and im better than everyone so It must be that kicking is better!!!! Now thats funny!!!

Sporty vs Traditional
shotochem replied to shaolinprincess's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Traditional for me, Ill leave the sport and competions to the kids. -
Hi Dee, by organization I mean for example... JKA, SKIF,SKA,ISOK..ect. Im familiar with these and they do not do musical Katas. Do you also learn the standard traditional ones? Heian 1-5 Tekki bassi Dai ect...?

Hi Dee, I study shotokan. I have never seen or herd of a musical form of kata in shotokan? We practice the standard shotokan katas but never to music. Its a good thing, I have no rythm... may I ask which organization you are with??

I like the concept and the sentiment. My only suggestion on the design is to add a few missile batteries on the helicopter levels. At that height and location you could proctect most of Manhattan. It is certainly a better design concept than the others to date.

I dont understand your problem. There is nothing wrong with losing, it should be taken as a learning experience. As long as you give it your all and use each loss to build on and improve yourself. You cant win all the time.....Thats life...

Sai, listen to DR. Shoto...... TAKE A NICE VACATION!!! A week on a nice sunny beach with a margarita or 2 will work wonders  It will also give the ol body a chance to heal...

My stance tends to vary with the opponent. If he is the same size or smaller and fast I tend to stand a little higher with a slightly lower guard. This also helps with someone who kicks high and often. I try to slow them down a bit. If he is bigger I tend to get in a lower stance with a higher guard to minimize his target area and move around alot more from side to side. I also like to mirror my opponents stance to mix it up a bit.

The practice of Katas is very important it helps with your form and proper body mechanics. Better body mechanics=better stronger faster techniques. It can only enhance your abilities.

Good to see you back AO

It looks like that poor child is a burn victum. Displaying this for novelty is in poor taste. To each his own....

The 4th is to celebrate independence but we must not forget the price that has to be paid to continue our way of life. Here is something worh reading....... thank you Mr. Pitts, By Leonard Pitts Jr. for the Miami Herald Published Wednesday, September 12, 2001 We'll go forward from this moment It's my job to have something to say. They pay me to provide words that help make sense of that which troubles the American soul. But in this moment of airless shock when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say, the only words that seem to fit, must be addressed to the unknown author of this suffering. You monster. You beast. You unspeakable *******. What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us? What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was, please know that you failed. Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause. Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve. Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together. Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous emotional energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, we walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle to know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming majority of us, people of faith, believers in a just and loving God. Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us weak. You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals. IN PAIN Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are in shock. We're still grappling with the unreality of the awful thing you did, still working to make ourselves understand that this isn't a special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster, isn't the plot development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of the awful scope of their ambition and the probable final death toll, your attacks are likely to go down as the worst acts of terrorism in the history of the United States and, probably, the history of the world. You've bloodied us as we have never been bloodied before. But there's a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us fall. This is the lesson Japan was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us this hard, the last time anyone brought us such abrupt and monumental pain. When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice. I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you, I think, do not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future. In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose failure allowed this to happen and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. There will be heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably determined. THE STEEL IN US You see, the steel in us is not always readily apparent. That aspect of our character is seldom understood by people who don't know us well. On this day, the family's bickering is put on hold. As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn, and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that we cherish. So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know what we're capable of. You don't know what you just started. But you're about to learn. Have a Happy and safe holiday......

I would believe most advanced karateka would know quite a few illegal techniques. We just do not use them in sparring. The amount of training time or style is not always relevant to the ability of the fighter. There are a couple of lower ranking people in our dojo that give me twice as much trouble as the more advanced students. They are big, strong and completly fearless, quite a handful while sparring. I can tell they are going to be real good if they survive.

In our dojo, dirty odiferous Gis are not permitted. If it can get up and walk away on its own..... let it go!!!! As for the belts if they are getting grungy light hand cleaning is the way to go.

Lost Teacher......Gettin...Fat....Need......help.......
shotochem replied to Ragnarok5727's topic in Health and Fitness
To me it sounds like a bunch of lazy students who are not serious about their training. If its not hard work its a Mc Dojo!!! Nothing of value comes easy if something is not earned whats the point........??? Your teacher obviously had higher standards than the students. -
If the mental illness or lack of intelligence is legitimet and proven in court I dont see a problem with it. On the other hand, if you were so mentally deficient that you couldnt take responsibility for your crime, would you understand that being put to death is cruel and unusual punishment??? Whats with the unusual part anyway?!?!???

I think a student should be fully informed as to what they are getting themselves into before they take their first class. We don't want to be building false senses of security that can cost lives, do we? A person may take a martial art, a McDojo martial art, and then feel confident only to learn that everything they were taught was useless, and end up in a hospital. I agree 100% that is not only imoral on the teachers part, but pure negligence!!! A good teacher will teach the student what will work for them in a real situation as well as the regular techniques. A false sense of security in a dangerous situation can get you seriously injured or worse.... :dead:
