  1. He flashed again and waved at me. I went. I was failed. you were driving on the wrong side of the road.... Cheers ....
  2. I definitely had injuries from MA, but unknown makes a good point. I gave myself time to heal. I didn't take a bunch of time off from training (I took a few days), I just modified the way I trained for a while I can't stay away from training more than a week .... EEEEEKKKKK just the thought scares me! LOL I can feel your pain, Im the same way. It just takes longer to heal now. It drives me crazy to train and not be able to perform at 100% but its better than sitting in front of the TV.
  3. Heres a crazy one for you...... When he commits himself foward the second he drops his hands to go for your legs step back lock into a front stance and reverse punch him directly in the face. Do it quickly in one motion, I guarantee it will hurt. Just a little thought from your friendly neighborhood Shotochem...
  4. I disagree, IMO kata and bunkai are very important. They offer an excellwt way to work on your technique as well as applications. Not everyone understands how to apply a technique or which one in a given situation. Kata are just a way to practice and inspire creativity. The more advanced and creative the person the more they will see. It is also a good way to visualize what will work for the individual as no two people are the same. If you do not see any merit in them that is your choice as to do them or not. I personally find them helpful and sometimes quite enjoyable.
  5. If we are talking about foot speed and agility I would say a 5. Hand and reaction speed Im a lot quicker. There are many different types of speed. There is certainly a difference between speed and velocity. It really is tough to rate on a scale.
  6. Im a puncher myself. What I find annoying is a guy that stays just outside my pounding range that darts in and out with multiple kicking combos. Counter puncking can be effective if you are the quicker one. When I face another puncher I personally tend to muscle it out a bit. Its about attitude and not worring about being hit and exchange a few shots till I can find an advantage. Not every opponent likes to be hit hard and some when hit enough change their tactics. I try to get them to fight my kind of fight. My strenght is not kicking high if you are a kicker throw a lot of kicks, just beware of the counterpunch and dont drop you guard on those high kicks youll be wide open.
  7. Let me rephrase it what I mean is that if you watch a person doing kata and their technique is weak looking, poor and sloppy they tend not to fight as well and vice versa. Unless, of course, the point of the kata is grace over power. Agreed. There is definatly a difference between graceful and poor. If a technique looks like it cant possibly work, it probably wont. If you kick like a rockette.....you might as well do kata around the christmas tree A technique should look like it has at the very least the possibility of causing some physical damage to an opponent.
  8. When you read this stuff it really shows how sick and deranged these people are. Its another fine example of the brainwashing of ignorant impoverised people to do the bidding of a dictatorship hidden beneath the veils of a religious cause.
  9. Hey everyone, As a general rule I watch people do katas. You can tell how a person fights by watching kata, if they show alot of power and quickness they worry me a lot more than the graceful dancers. You tend to be a little more wary of the ones that hit harder than the ones that look good. Then again there are exceptions to every rule .
  10. For me it was 9 or 10 months. Im in no hurry. They say it takes a lifetime . I have been getting banged up a lot lately pushing myself too hard.( I like to play hard ) I may start to act more my age and cut back a little. Its worth it to let the body recover. Especially us over thirty peoples.(physically). Ive missed a couple of gradings due to injury and I just came back stronger. Its only a piece of cloth around my waist, but I want to be good enough to have earned it. A few months wait can be the difference between just doing and understanding......
  11. I agree. As for the yes master slave comment, I was joking I would think a true master would not promote its usage towards himself but rather towards the founder of the style.
  12. Flexibility Santa Pleeeease!!! Ive been a good boy ( Ill even clean up after Rudolph) If ya get it for me I can be real bad
  13. I don't believe that katas are a waste of time. Katas improve power, speed, flexibility, and memory capabilities. Power in kata can be a crucial step to having power and agression in fighting. Now heres a first, I agree with MonkeyGirl Whats next??? Me doing a 540??? The possibilities are endless
  14. Use more side to side movement , counter then move in and strike on his cold side either stay inside his kicking range or just outside. Do not take him head on you will get a pounding. I have felt your pain.......
  15. So thats what happened tp Big Boss Man from the old WWF!!!!! Y'all want fries with that??? For some reason I just dont get it
  16. Relax, hes only a shodan. All BB are not created equal. The guy just walked in with his hands down and tried to grapple a grappler. It is not playing to his strengths. Never go in with your hands down stay back advance cautiously and when he starts to shoot low for your legs kick him in the face then just keep striking and striking and strike some more it dont matter where just dont let him grab you. I used to be a wrestler and I still wouldnt want to roll around with these guys. If I were to grab any limb not grabbing would be attacking.
  17. Squating down then jumping over people or objects!!!! No good for the knees
  18. if I eat any less than 3000 I start to lose weight, and I'm only 140lbs LOL! Just make sure you get those calories from clean sources! Jack, you are a lucky guy Im am not fat but not skinny Im somewhere in between. I usually target 2000-2200 cal a day max to maintain my weight. I dont quite have that 6pack yet but its a lot better than the keg I used to carry
  19. Hey guys, I guess I can have an extra 700+ calories a day??? The site says Im overweight yet I do not consume nearly the amount of calories suggested??? I guess it doesnt take into account muscle mass...
  20. As a "vertically challenged" individual, I tend to favor striking. I feel that it would be a disadvantage to lock up with a guy a foot taller and heavier than me. Though a wrist lock or armbar with a pressure point or two combined with striking would work well for a person with my build. It really does matter how big the attacker is. I know Gracie is a small guy But he fights in a tournament setting where there are rules. I just dont feel that it is the answer in a no rules self defense situation. Of course any MA would help but the bigger stronger brute has the advantage.
  21. Thanks KC, Ill try adding some punces to my routine. Oh and shotochem ... I have done those in my cardio firness class. They are killers and these also work the hip flexors. I call them Rollies.... So, thats why my hips have been feeling better lately..... I thought I might have gotten younger
  22. Hi Kickchick, So would full sit ups be a good strengthening excercise for the hip flexors? We also do a full sit up slowly with a side to side motion kind of an arc from one side to the other. Which muscles are affected most by this? Just wondering........
  23. Bluedragon you do not train in Karate."goshin jutsu kyo jujo"is not a type, style, form,or entity of legitimate or authentic Karate. Their is no linage in " goshin jutsu kyo jujo" to either ,Shuri-Te,Tomari-Te or Naha-Te, or any individual or groups in Japan or Okinawan. Also "goshin jutsu kyo jujo" does not conform in any manner to the biomechanics found in REAL KARATE. Does the lineage really matter? The Karate practiced today is not the same as Funakoshi taught. It has evolved and had changes over time. What makes you an expert on the essence of REAL Karate? Does it really matter what Blue Dragon practices? He enjoys it and says he benifits from it. This sounds like another JKA guy with a H**d On for Jerry Durant. (Which is why I would never join the JKA) The disscussion was supposed to be on the effectiveness of Karate, instead it is a personal attack on Blue Dragon. Now is that"Perfection of Character"??? The essence of Real Karate?? BTW, I dont give a Rats *** about Jerry Durant. Why do we waste time on the politics of MA? I could care less about politics. (Just on another Rant..........)
  24. Seasons come and go. Perhaps you can't kick as high or you forget a move or two but, take it from me, you can't stop the journey once you set your feet on that path. It's the same path that martial artists have trodden for the past three thousand years. The further you go, the more you realize how far you have to go. This is true of many things in life. With age and experience comes wisdom. If we are lucky we all learn what really matters and what is unimportant. great article
  25. If a smaller person can stay in tight they can kick while the larger guy cant . The down side is when you are in close prepare to take a pounding(and give one ) it is not for the squeemish .
