  1. Hi Guys, I like to practice punching very slowly to work on technique using light weights. Start with 2lbs then work your way up. I dont like to use more than 5lbs or it doesnt feel like Im punching(it feels like weight lifting). Ive also started to use them while doing slow motion katas along with ankle weights. Ive found its starting to increase my speed and power. Just remember go slowly and not too much weight or you can injure yourself. Does anyone else do this too???
  2. No, I have not actually been in a fight in 15 yrs or so. Ive discovered that most adults do not fight to settle their differences. There are exceptions of course and humans are irrational but keeping a clear head and sense of awareness will go alot further than fighting. There have been a few times where I could have fought. Then I thought of the legal consequences and they outweighed my desire for self gratification and revenge. Always be the better person.... However, if you are in danger and have no choice hit with everything youve got and get away ASAP!!!
  3. Ill never forget when I started. I was 50lbs heavier and I could hardly touch my toes. I could barely survive the stretching. The sensei and a couple of the other adult students helped and encouraged me to keep going. They told me what I now tell others that are just starting..... "we all were the same when we started.....if you fall down we are here to help you back up.... just keep trying... . I have not looked back since!!!!!
  4. Try not to worry about winning. It is only sparring. Work on your technique. Work on one thing at a time lose 1000 times but learn and improve in the process. The place to lose and improve is the dojo. It will keep you alive on the street should the situation arrive. Know what you are good at and remember sparring is not the same as the real thing.
  5. I know there have been many child abductions over the years. There seems to be a new trend. The abductors are getting bolder and more violent. They are grabbing all ages and teens as well. It is time we all started to pay closer attention to all those around us and to tell our children about the dangers and realities of the world today. I would highly recommend that children be taugh self defence and most importantly.....awareness of there surrondings. We all could make a difference.
  6. Good points G95. There are many types of "BIG" guys. You can work around the Fat Guy if you dont try to over power him. The Tall Skinny Guy, if you fight in close you can jam them and take their long legs out of the picture. Be prepared to take a shot or to in the process . The Athletic Fat Guy is much more difficult, he may be just as fast as the little guy only the little guy tends to be much quicker side to side where as the big guy tends to be quick in and out. The Athletic Tall Guy is a nightmare.... Hit and run has yet to work on my own "Goliath"!!! Im still working on that one, maybe Ill get him next time.....
  7. Careful, Bon you might find what you are looking for ! I think you will enjoy your new training
  8. Reeses Peanut Butter Cups!!!! My son has to hide them!!!! MUST-NOT- GIVE -IN!!!! HELP!!!
  9. In our dojo it is the higher ranking persons responsibility to show control and not injure them. You are supposed to be learning and helping each other improve. Pummeling the weaker is not what it is all about. We regularly spar with all ranks, I enjoy the challenge of a better opponent as well as the "unpredictable" white belt
  10. Metallica-S&M Nirvana-unplugged Creed-My own Prison The Who-Tommy AC/DC-Back in Black Guns&Roses-Appetite Alice in Chains- unplugged Led Zepplin- IV Pink Floyd-Darkside & The Wall Staind-Break the cycle Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory (My current Favorite ) I listen to all types of music. I tend to make my own CDs since there are very few albums I would sit through without skippingover
  11. I agree with MA. However I belive in keeping things as simple as possible. A person has to know their personal abilities and limitations. I know that I have a better chance of hitting lotto than springing through the air with a flying death kick to the head of a much taller person. For me a lot of punching, elbows, knees a grab, and a kick or 2 to the ribs or lower will have to suffice. Im not as young and flexible as I used to be If its your life and you have to defend yourself there are no rules........
  12. I prefer the 14oz heavy weight gi. It may be a little hotter in the summer but you actually stay cooler, it doesnt stick to you like the lighter ones, the sweat just rolls off of you and you get better ventilation. I get mine one size larger and altered by the tailor its much more comfortable and looks better. It also feels like body armor and makes nice popping noises when you punch and kick...
  13. I say start right up. I was not exactly a light weight when I started. You will gradually tone up and lose weight by training. The important thing is to start gradually and not overdo it then as your body develops you can push yourself harder. It will not be easy it is a lot of hard work and dedication. But IMO I feel it is worth it!!!!
  14. The manufacture matters not. It is unfortunate that bombs have to be used at all. The fact is that these people value thier lives so little that they are willing to kill themselves just to kill innocent people in the process, Just to create terror. Its a matter of intent. On the other side of the coin the Isrealies and Americans do not intentionally kill innocents if they can help it. At least the effort is made. The Palestinians could have had their own state. Instead, they chose violence. Remember their fellow arabs in Jordan are the ones who displaced them in the first place and would not keep them because the are terrorists. How soon we forget.......
  15. Pleease dont say over 30!!!!
  16. a couple of days to adjust. Then youll be fine.
  17. The "militant you are refering to was the leader of HAMAS!!! He was personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent poeple through terrorist actions. The people knew who he was they should not have been near him. If Bin Laden were sitting in the middle of an orphanage I would hit it with a missle. The world would be a better place. The ends justify the means...........
  18. Travel to mars is scientifically exiting. The logistics and practicality even in 20yrs is a stretch. I would say the unmanned robot missions are more practical at this time. We should work on improving this planet be it terra forming deserts, cleaning our rivers& oceans, or most importantly, uniting as a world. If we cant work things out here how can we do it out there.........????
  19. He guys thanks for the ideas, Ill be on a cruise so there is an exellent gym facility aboard. The only problem is that Im terrible with all that hi tek gym equipment. I tend to stay away from the weights. I usually go the push up , sit up, crunches ect... route along with Karate 4-5 classes wk. I guess if I controll myself around all that good food I should be ok. Im just trying not to gain anything and not be too stiff after a couple of weeks off.
  20. Does anyone have any tips on how to stay in shape while on vacation for a couple of weeks? I would consider pool kata, but I think people would think Im nuts!!!
  21. ROTFLMAO!!!!!!  MASTER BON I am truly humbled !!! _________________ I'll leave the Zen to the Zen-Masters!!! Chi never blocked a kick....... [ This Message was edited by: shotochem on 2002-07-25 12:06 ]
  22. Since there is not that great a difference in size, I would say the one with better technique.
  23. I normally do not kick high, though I can kick about 6" over my head when I get exited. Do you guys kick much higher on one side than the other? Or is it just me? I normally would not even attempt a roundhouse to the head with my left leg. The right is not a problem.
  24. Leaving was the right thing to do. This person obviously should not be teaching. Where did you go after? Did you find another dojo?
  25. In that case Ill cut down on the crunches. A shower before and after smells like a good idea!!!!
