actually i know its a little off topic, but Italy has actually made a regulation for requirements in making Pizzas, because they were too worried about the art being lost due to influences from elsewhere. it includes requirements on how large the pizza can be, toppings that are not allowed to be used, what types of cheeses can be used and a few more. Just find it kind of humorous, and slightly on par with martial arts and requirements..

I think the UFC is getting much better in quality. Sylvia suffered a horrible arm break in 3 places(many stories going around, this seems the most credible so far ). And Kimo was no match for Shamrock. Apparantly the win has opened up alot of options for Shamrock, who si debating between returning to the WWE, or taking some fairly lucrative fight offers.

Ok so some basics... I am a heavyweight. I wear a size 6 in Karate Gis. I just ripped the leg out of another pair of gi pants, very frustrating. the size wasnt the problem, i just got part caught and when i kicked it ripped it in half. I am looking for the highest quality Gi i can find. I realized that I have used some fairly mid range gis my entire Kenpo career. Yet when i started Jiu Jitsu I bought the best Koral and Best Atama Gis i could find in size A-5 Anyways Are these the best gis or are there more that are similar, and or better?

Your midsection is one of the most important things for stabilizing and being your base for all punches and kicks. One thing people do that is a mistake is they do abwork like crazy and develop outstanding abdoninals, but neglect to ever do any back excercises... lower back specifically. one thing to remember is that you dont want to do excercises that cause you sharp pains, if it gets to that point stop let your body rest. there are a large number of lower back excercises you can do. from simply laying on your stomach with arms stretched in front of you and legs straight behind and at the same time lift arms and legs up towards the roof.. Do sets of this like you would sit ups. that is a basic one, i am sure if you go on the net and search for lower back workouts you will find alot mroe that are adequate

well I think that since Spiderman has superhuman strength and powers he has the edge. Daredevil has superhuman scences and incredible fighting abilitied, but alas when he gets hit he is after all still human, Spiderman can get tossed full steam into a building and break concrete and get up fighting. I think poor daredevil is outmatched. Now the fight that would interest me is daredevil vs batman

Moving your shoulders.
Luckykboxer replied to Karatekid04's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think you are probably being told not to move yoru shoulders for a specific technique or movement. In the course of your training you will be told lots of things that if taken out of context will not make sense. One thing you have to realize is that a move shown to be effective in one scenario, may or may not be effective in anotehr completely diffrent scenario. I know that when you start out it can be very intimidating. Hang in there and keep studying and i guarantee that everything will start to click -

if this is how you feel about it then you probably agree that at age 32 i should be able to take out my social security benefits now. or that i should have the same admission price as children or senior citizens. or that a 9 year old should be able to drive a car, or drink, or smoke, or vote. or that a 32 year old that never went to high school should be able to attend your local highschool and participate in high school sports. or that any other reasons that age has been placed on certain items or activities are unjust because its based on age? I am not trying to make fun of you, I just think that people should not be entitled to everything at any age. I know i dont want to see britney spears made president of the united states because 22 million 10-15 year olds are able to vote. Its a tough position on either side. And there are definitely things that can be said about both sides. I do feel that true signs of black belts, are the aiblity to think, act, react, and in general be dangerous if the situation calls for it. Or have the ability to meet situations with the amount of force the situation calls for.

the problem here is that the majority of people are not mentally, physically, or emotionally ready for a black belt until they have grown up.... so to speak. I dont think that a black belt is given solely on regurgitating curriculum. I think that Black Belts are awarded on the entire package, how someone acts emotionally, mentally, how their body control is, etc. The curriculum is only there as a guide to teach basics and how to move. I have a 12 year old in our school that has been training since he was 5 years old. He learns well, he can do moves in the air and they look great. hes about 4 foot 6 and about 85-90 pounds. He is not physically dangerous, he can barely do manuevers on the body because of size differences. He is a 1st Brown waiting to test for Black Belt. His parents are pushing for him to be able to test because they believe since he knows the curriculum that he should test. Emotionally hes a child, mentally hes a child, physically hes a child. He has the curriculum down in the air, but at what point is that enough? The problem with young kids getting blackbelts when they probably shouldnt is only a fairly recent problem, I think within the last 20-30 years tops. I believe it has started because kids are joining karate younger then ever before, Psychologists are telling parents to put their children into karate to help deal with ADDS and any other learning disability, or disorder. So you have children starting karate at age 5, and spending 8-10 years learning curriculum and moving forward, and then wanting ot get their black belt. It isnt the childs fault he started so long. It isnt the childs fault that he has spent 8-10 years learning a curriculum that takes an average adult with no hinderances 6 years to reach a black belt level.(obviously this is from those that make it that far, not all adults who enter martial arts) Now the instructors have a tough call. Do they tell the parents the kid isnt ready and have him repeatedly go over the same curriculum for years as their body and mind catch up? Do they tell the parents no they wont test them and risk losing that student to another karate studio that will test them, or at least train them and then as the kid is ready for their black belt there they are now of age and have grown in body and mind? Do they just test the student and let him get by on curriculum only? Its a tough call Every option is a lose - lose situation. Either someone is promoted before hes ready and there is a watering down of the advanced levels. OR someone isnt promoted and they are negative and frustrated, they possibly leave the martial arts, or talk bad about it, or they talk bad about the instructor and school to all their friends and create bad blood. There are always exceptions... There will be 15 year old kids who are physically mature, mentally mature, and have it all... but they will definitely be few and far between. I dont know what the answers are to this, and I am positive that it will only get worse. More and more kids are taking martial arts at younger and younger ages. And with how litigious people are now days, it is only a matter of time that someone tries to sue because little johnny or little susan were not allwoed to test for one reason or another. I hate having such a glass is half empty type of attitude towards it. I dont think there is any easy solution. people now days want things quick, it seems more and more people are getting the attitude that things are owed to them. I would like to think that if an instructor told someone who had all the curriculum down that they were not physically or mentally ready to test yet that the student would understand and strive that much harder... But unfortunately i dont see that happening. Let me say that i find children able to focus on the curriculum very admirable, but i am also a big opponent to advancing someone due to their knowledge of curriculum

kind of funny you mention breaking it yourself. I would estimate my nose has been broken over 50 times. luckily for me the first time it was broken it was broken on such a clean line that it seems every time since it has broken on the same line, has made it really easy to reset it myself... get that nice eyes watering and want to smack your head into a wall right after i do it, but at least i dont have to go see the doctor every time.. sure it isnt exactly straight, but i seriously doubt without major reconstructive surgery it would be completely straight anyways

I dont want to be critical, but by gaining fat you are in no way helping yourself. Fat will never turn into muscle mass, there are absolutely zero positive side effects to adding fat to your body. If someone wants to gain weight, I would always recommend only gaining muscle mass. I am a huge proponent for working with certified nutritionists. I am usually very very hesitant in giving out advice due to the litigious nature of people these days. Some basics you will want to know though. Alot of times people will think they need to eat a ton of protein to gain weight. the facts are that protein is needed to increase your muscle mass, but in and of itself it doesnt work that way. You need to be training your muscles for them to require the protein, also if you eat too much protein for your body to use it places a big stress on your kidneys. a general rule of thumb i have used for myself is no more then 1 gram of protein for pound of lean body weight i weigh when i am working out regularly. If i am in a mass gaining phase i go for approx. 1 1/2 grams of protein for pound of lean body mass I am at, but i combine that with a very intense weight training program. At your age, I would discourage any heavy weight lifting. I believe light lifting is good, and I would recommend alot of pushups, pullups, etc. The reasoning is that heavy lifting when you are in the age range of growth can stunt your growth and lead to some issues where your muscles actually inhibit you. Just a little story for you about myself. I started 9th grade at 5 foot 2 inches and 102 pounds. I was almost 15 years old. I graduated 12th grade at 6 foot 2 inches and weighed 195 pounds. I did zero weight training until i was a junior in high school and i had gone through the majority of my growth spurt, I didnt know much about weight training and the lifting i did do was not super heavy. Most of my growth came from age 15-17. I think thats about right where you are at. Eat smart, possibly have your parents set an appointment with your doctor so you can discuss it. And good luck

I believe they are in the mid 40s now. they all have some good action. The first 10 or so UFCs were a little less skilled, as peopel were getting used to what was going on and developing training to cover all aspects of what was being thrown at them. the last 30 or so have all been fairly good, with some of the best matches in my opinion coming in the last 10 or so UFCs. I know there are memorable fights thrown all throughout the events, but i cant remember one UFC that stands out tremendously over the rest.

I have always heard it called a Kip, or a Kip up. It isnt very hard once you have it, but it may be tricky to learn. the best i can describe it as such.. bring you legs and knees up towards your chest shoot your legs out away from your chest(the trick here is not to shoot with you rlegs.. but from you waist), while at the same time driving your hips up towards the ceiling. Also at the same time bring your arms forward in front of you, as you arch your back. I know thats not a very good explanation, but that get you started, once you have it its alot easier to do without all of those parts working together. practice on a well padded area, and be careful not to flop yourself onto your own back.

my best wishes to you and your significant other White Warlock, and thanks for the welcome all. If and when you want to meet up to chat just let me know I enjoy meeting new people, especially those with similar interests.

this is exactly what i was eluding too, great description. I have gone hard on a bag with no gloves and it almost feels the next day or that day that you havehad your knuckles pulled apart, adn they are swelled in between. that quite simply is why i never use the heavy bag without glvoes now.. it just isnt worth that feeling to me

Best place to hit someone?
Luckykboxer replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
this reminds me of an Ed Parker quote.. I may have a coupel words off but its basically this.. When Pure Knuckles meet Pure Flesh you have Pure Kenpo. -
thanks guys, Delta I train under American Kenpo as well. My Instructor is Professor Barry Barker, He recieved his Black Belt under Jim Mitchell before Jim Mitchell broke away from Ed Parker. Before that he had studied under Parker Linekin and Brian Adams. He in recent years trains under Ernie George. the school is its own Affiliation now, called american kenpo alliance or AKA When I first started our curriculum was pretty much dead on the Ed Parker system, over the last 12 years Professor Barker has added in techniques and principles and changed some up. While our Forms and basics remain the same, alot of the techniques have been altered and have had name changes. Its funny sometimes when I remember a technique from 12 years ago and think to myself... wait a minute where did that go? Its also fun to have kenpoists from other schools come visit for a workout and see a technique and say.. wow thats awsome! I have worked with Several Kenpo artists in the last 12 years, one thing i am definitely looking forward to is the Long Beach Internationals this month. There is an all day seminar with the likes of... Bob White Huk Planas Larry Tatum Mike Pick Paul Dye I think that in another 20 years I will be able to look back on that and be astounded by how lucky i was to have those peopel in one place at one time for a seminar.

In my experience with point sparring in the current state the following are keys. 1. - Speed wins every time. Be quick and decisive. trying to find a target open will get you second place in every fight. Decide to move and then move, let the target appear at the last second. 2. - Combinations are critical. If you throw one punch or one kick you will be lucky to win a match. same thing goes for height and depth of targets... if you always throw high shots you will be picked off and lose, if you always throw shallow weapons it will be easily timed and countered. 3. - You should already have the combinations needed to win. Use the principles of combat to allow yourself to use the weapons you know. Above all else... have fun! dont hold a grudge. enjoy the experience. and try your hardest

Katas, Forms, etc are one of my weak points, its something i have to really focus on because i am so into the contact aspect. One way I am able to help motivate myself in Katas, and my students is to once in a while have them do contact katas.. basically i will have about 4 other students surround the student doing the kata and have them do the attacks that match the moves in the kata. I have found it to be a great tool to help students who may have difficulties understanding the moves int he kata.

TKD - only for tall people?
Luckykboxer replied to aefibird's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have little first hand knowledge of tae kwon do other then the tae kwon do people i have sparred or fought. I guess with anything else if taken out of context it makes sense. if two people have the exact same skills, and all other things are exactly equal then the person with the longer legs should win every time.... now that isnt the case, and no two people are exactly alike, they ahve different strengths adn weaknesses, and different thoughts adn skills, and different strategy and abilities. The biggest peopel are not always the best, but I have to say that the advantage of longer legs to strike a target from farther away is a bit of an advantage.... once again only if all other things are equal -
I like the topic, along time ago it was pointed out to me that when i did any power combat i fought naturally. But when i did point sparring tournaments I switched to southpaw style. After thinking about it alot more I realized that the reason i switched to southpaw in tournaments is because so many schools tought how to fight against a closed stance so often( against another natural fighter) that they were confused when i turned my side and fought them as a southpaw. Whenever anyone started catching on i would switch to natural and the confusion was usually enough to get the extra points in where i needed them. I have tried a few times in kickbxoign matches to change southpaw in a middle of a fight to see how the confusion factor set in.. To be honest it didnt make much of a difference. The only reasoning i could come up with myself was that in point sparring too many competitiors are thinking of a target to hit, and when that target is presented to them at a different angle then they are used to hitting they have problems adjusting. In the more harder combat styles i think that instead of specific targets they are looking at zones to strike and the angles are already there depending on what the zones you are wanting to hit are available.

are there some good videos that go over the basics. Swordsmanship has always been interesting to me, and swords have always been fun for me, I have several. I have never spent the time to get to learn how to use them, they are all pretty much decorations for my collecting bug at this point
