Shaving...irritable skin (girls answer too, please)
Luckykboxer replied to Mr. Mike's topic in General Chat
Hrmm make sure you are taking a shower or soaking your face in hot water first. That softens the skin, opens the pours, and makes it easier to cut your facial hair. Next use a sensitive skin style of foam to shave with. next use a brand new razor, and use cold water to shave with. cold will contract the steel in the razor making it sharper to work with, and warm will expand the steel and make it duller..... even if it is miniscule, which it is, it is a difference. next when you shave dont shave large areas before rinsing the blade. do one stroke, rinse and repeat. Also dont go back and forth over the same area, that cause razor burn. Also as much as you may hate doing it, spend the money for a high end aftershave. I use an aftershave by Varvatos, it cost 32 Bucks, but I never have razor burn, I use a MAch 3, use the blades maybe 5-6 times each, sometimes less and sometimes more, but basically 1 a week. When it comes to health products, like conditioners, shampoos, aftershaves, colognes, lotions, any of that crap. I have seen a huge difference by going to really high end products. Sure it would be easier to go to the grocery store and buy cheap crap, but I got tired of razor burn, so i started buying the good products and it works great -

Weak chins
Luckykboxer replied to Topic's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
its not always the chin, you can get knocked out from a blow pretty much anywhere to your head. actually the forehead is a bad place to hit someone, if the person drops their chin and lets you punch the crown of the head youll probably break your knuckles. -
hrmm this is a topic that could go on for pages. My advice truely is to see a nutritionist/trainer and pay for some face time and grill him on it. it really is that complex depending on your goals. Basically you have short term fast absorbing proteins and long term slow absorbing proteins. Its definitely beneficial to make sure you get both, Do you use any protein shakes? or are you taking all your protein through whole foods? You might want to look at supplementing BTW to the Isopure guy.... how do you handle that stuff? It tastes decent going down, but 1 second later it feels like my tongue is wrapped in a chalk straight jacket

read what White Warlock wrote, memorize it. and add a ditto for about every person who knows what they are talking about as a reply. And as far as elbows in the United States go, I fought in Vegas 2 years ago with Elbows Generally the boxing commisions that overlook the sport dont allow it as they deem it too dangerous. I completely disagree as the average boxer takes much more punishment in one fight then I would estimate a Thai Kickboxer takes in a dozen fights. Elbows open up cuts easy and they look vicious, but when they land solidly its fight over, when they dont its usually a cut and it is more like the all bark and no bite saying...... too a point

ya you dont really have a thai workout. at least not a fighting workout. I train differently depending on the fights i have coming up. I train Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, and Muay Thai. When I have a Kickboxing fight approaching my workouts are similar to as follows. jump rope for 10 mins. 3 min round of shadow boxing - 1 min rest between all these rounds 3 min shadow boxing with 5 pound weight in each hand x 3 3 min rounds of pad work, estimate at least a few hundred strikes thrown on the pads per round, concentration is on combos and speed. x 3 3 min rounds of sparring x3 3 min rounds of just taking strikes x3 3 min rounds of sparring x3 then i do my "homework" roundhouses on the heavy bag push kicks on the heavy back inverted front kicks on the heavy bag depending on how close to the fight depends on how many i do. the 2 days before the fight is usually rest with no activity. 2-3 days before that i cut out the hard sparring sessions. 5 days before the fight I have gotten to my ramp up stage on the kicks on the heavy bag and will be doing anywhere from 800-1000 kicks per leg. just in my off training, I am throwing on average 200-300 kicks per day per leg on the heavy bags. I am usually only in my super heavy kick training for about 2-3 weeks at a time tops. Usually its in the 200-300 range that i mentioned. Afterward I will do my neck workout. I have a head sling that attaches weights to it and i will lawy with my head hanging off the endge of the ring and do 3 sets of 15 per side, front, and back to strengthen my neck. Abwork is tossed in at the very end, that ranges anywhere from standard cruches to decline crunches, to medicine ball crunches, leglifts, partner leglifts with resistance, etc. Weight training Is interesting. I used to powerlift, but since I started fighting more several years ago I dont do as much. I dont do any leg training with weights at all. I do basic movements now and I dont worry about maxing out with weight, I generally dont do any weight I can rep out at least 8 times. when I in fight mode I will stop weight training 2-3 weeks before my fight. off training though i pick it up a little harder. My training is usually 3 exercises per muscle group/ with 4 sets in each exercise and between 8-16 reps per set. I may go more or less depending on the day and the weight i use, but for what I do thats the general workout i use. I really like and recommend switching the exercies you do up, so that your body has to constantly adapt. For example for chest I will chose what I do, from the following exercises.. flat bench barbell, flat bench dumbells, incline bench barbell, incline bench dumbells, decline bench barbell, incline bench dumbells, cables, standing, or on a decline/incline bench. I usually stay away from the other types for chest as this gives me enough variety without having to get ridiculous. If you are wanting to gain lean mass. then here are some suggestions. eat 6-7 meals a day, every 3 hours. speak to a nutritionist as far as you rdaily intake of protein and carbs and fat. If you are eating healthy the fat wont really be a concern. Protein is debatable right now as there are a few different fields of thought on it. My thought is that if you are wanting to gain mass, then take approx 1 1/2 grams of protein per day for every pound you weigh in lean mass. You should be very active in your training though. Some people believe too much protein injures the kidneys, otehrs believe it doesnt. Carbs are alot trickier. Too few and you lose energy for prime workouts, and too much and you gain fat, I refuse to give any advice here, as I tend to undercut my carbs beyond anything that my trainers and workout partners recommend. The best advice I can give is to find someone you can train with or partner with that is bigger/stronger/faster then yourself and will push you. There is nothing better then motivation to get you through a tough workout

Top 10 Streetfighting Problems.
Luckykboxer replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Ok Wise guy lets dissect your brilliance then. Obviously your impression of Honor and mine are very different. It sounds to me they think nothing of Honor and in fact just want to beat people. Now if the immigrants in your area are so bad, that the law enforcement cant keep them in check then you probably want to move. If you cant move, and the law cant handle them, then you probably want to get alot of friends to start hanging out with for protection, or just get used to pain. /shrug Unless you have far superior skills to 10 people you will get your butt kicked every time. I have fought against this many people a few times, and unfortunately even if you manage to take a few out its only a matter of time before you get wrapped and taken to the ground, that is assuming they are serious about hurting you. There is no way around it. If you think there is you have been watching too many martial arts movies with large fight scenes. Stop kidding yourself! yes read my above statements. And like i said before even if you get lucky in a fight with just yourself and 10 others there is no way you can try to defend another person and yourself. Too much kung fu theater leaking into your head, it doesnt work that way in real life. I think that if you wipped out a nunchaku you better be a hell of alot better then the are, because at that point your probably going to go from butt kicking to hospitalization if you dont win. Just what is Classic about this dilemma? Absolutely nothing in my opinion. It sounds to me that it is people making comments and you are the one starting the problems. And once again if you dont like people making comments go somewhere else. Now mr Sensitive, tell me where in that post you said you were doing all you could not to get in trouble, or how you were staying out of the wrong places? Ill give you a hint.,... you didnt. IF you want realistic advice ask for it. I have seen it given many times in these forums. If you want a comic book answer or a kung fu theater answer then go to the movies and imagine it. -
Help! People dissing other dojos....
Luckykboxer replied to KarateChick06's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have only had one person ever tell me their style was better then mine. It was a Shito Ru Black Belt. His explanation was because his art had a longer history then my american kenpo. After discussing the reasoning I invited him to a class, he said he still wasnt impressed so I asked what would impress him. He stated when we hit over 100 years old he would then start to give us credit. Obviously someone like this is never going to be happy. No skin off my back. I find the biggest problem i run into is making sure that students of my art are not bad mouthing other styles. unfortunately there are several schools that are a bit weaker in tournaments for various reasons, and sometimes its hard to explain to a kids between the ages of 6 - 18 that its just different not inferior -
Help! People dissing other dojos....
Luckykboxer replied to KarateChick06's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well, for one dont beat around the bush, tell him straight out that it bugs you when he talks trash. Obviously he is either trying to recruit you to his school, or he is trying to justify something in his mind about his own school and choice to train there. it doesnt sound like you have been to his school either to see what the do. So it is very possible his claims are correct. It is also very possible that he trains for a different reason then you do. If this is the case then most likely the same school or style doesnt match for you both. His school may very well be the best school and training for his desires. Yours can at the same time be the best school and training for your desires. not every person is the same and not every person trains for the same reasons. It sounds like it may also bug you because maybe there is something you feel is lacking in your school or training. regardless, never fool yourself into thinking that someone else is bugging you. You have the power to listen or be around that person. you have the power to let that persons words effect you. you have the power to disregard whatever they say as meaningless to you and let it roll off of your back. My suggestion is to find out what is really bugging you. I seriously doubt its that he is bragging about his school and knocking yours. -
What makes a great fighter?
Luckykboxer replied to Carbon_Cricket's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
all of that is learned. you learn how to move better and be better coordinated hence being naturally good at fighting. you are given examples of how to strive towards something, hence being naturally mroe driven. you learn to shut out pain, or deal with pain in different ways hence being more tolerant to pain. etc. etc. unless someone has birth defects that prevent the way the recieve outside stimulus everything you stated is a learned action, not born. -
Controlling adrenaline shakes....
Luckykboxer replied to zerohour's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
dont be so confident you overlook the gun his buddy shoves into your back and lights you up. I couldnt disagree more with your assessment on how to handle it. confidence is a byproduct of experience, and if you are just going off of thinking you can handle things, then you have a great possibility of ending up on the wrong end of a bad train wreck you wont always live in a fight, plenty of people die every day in fights. people who threaten you are not usually weak, usually its the opposite, and if you dont have the skills necessary your finished. also its probably not a good idea to shout/speak/ say insults back to multiple people who are starting an issue with you unless you are really looking for the fight. I wouldnt call that confidence so much as i would call it you wanting to fight for whatever reasons you have. -

Luckykboxer replied to zerohour's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
experience man.. period end of story. you have to get used to dealing with the changes that come with an adrenaline rush. you have to learn how to continue functioning with the adrenaline rush. you have to get used to working with an adrenaline rush. if you dont practice it then you wont ever have full control(for lack of a better term) over it. to practice it you dont even have to fight necessarily. just do things that you are uncomfortable doing. one thing that will help you alot(trust me it sounds stupid but try it) if you are shy at all, then go to complete strangers and start a conversation. preferably do it to attractive women. you will get an adrenaline rush and once you learn to maintain your edge through that you will be much better off dealing with it in a fight. now of course the better method is to have some form of fight where your adrenaline goes on you and you have to deal with it, but this is just so much more fun -
something here really bothers me and this is it.. you say the guy is a kenpo practitioner for 3 years. obviously if this is true then his school isnt teaching, or requiring the pledges that normally go along with kenpo. pledges of restraint for example. and pledging to never misuse the skills learned to hurt others. I would have to say that there is probably alot more to this story. If not then I would say that the kenpo school the guy goes to is a crappy one. And yes to answer your question real life experience is invaluable. even if it is preventing punching to the face.

What makes a great fighter?
Luckykboxer replied to Carbon_Cricket's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i have to disagree with the comments that a great fighter is born.... completely... its all about practice and state of mind. you have to embrace pain to be a great fighter. if you cant handle pain you will never be a great fighter. you have to embrace practice to be a great fighter. experience, intelligence, intuitiveness, environmental awareness, there are a whole long list of things. to make it short. here you go. you have to be willing to get hurt, and take chances to be a great fighter. you have to have the training and practice and experience to make the decisions necessary to be a great fighter. you have to have the awareness to change your strategy based on all factors involved. all of this can be learned. none of it is born in us. -
the main way the book tao of jeet kun do will help you in a street fight is if you use it to knock someone over the head and unconcious with. other then that you can use the principles in the book towards your own training to better equip yourself to deal with a real life or death situation. your ability to prevail is only going to be as good as your skills and training are though.

Top 10 Streetfighting Problems.
Luckykboxer replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
this is ridiculous. here is a solution..... learn common sense. First of all, if you are in an area that you are constantly being harrassed in, then move your happy * to a new area. that is of course assuming you dont like it. next... if you are worried about your girlfriends or friends safety then dont bring them to those kinds of places. I have fought multiple opponents many times. It is damn near impossible to worry about anything other then yourself in this situation, if you do you are up the creek without the proverbial paddle. Now you basically can change only a couple things in this case. the environment is the easiest thing for you to change. In other words, stay out of dangerous areas at dangerous times. maybe stick to areas during the day when it is safer. or go other places at night where thugs are not at. I am always shocked by how some people try to make things so much more difficult then they are. -
We do it in our system of Kenpo.... its relatively new. We call it Junior Belts. for example... our normal progression goes.... white yellow orange purple blue green red 3rd Brown 2nd Brown 1st Brown Black but for children, younger kids, teens dont do it... it goes. white junior yellow yellow junior orange orange junior purple purple blue green red 3rd Brown 2nd Brown 1st Brown Black As you see there are only 3 junior ranks. basically the junior ranks are only for basics. this system was done primarily to keep young kids in the system. younger kids have a harder time remembering and concentrating, and holding in more information. This allows us to focus on the basics necessary for each belt so the younger kids not only stay focused and retain more, but they stay interested and have a longer stay in the martial arts. each belt rank has 6 stripes for basics and 6 stripes for curriculum. the junior belts just work on the basics first. We expect everyone else to retain and learn all at once and not broken up as we do for the kids. I have a strong feeling that if not for the monetary factors of trying to retain students longer you would not have ever seen junior or half belt rankings. hope this helps explain it from my perspective decently

ahhh the famous what ifs.... as in.. I am teaching a student how to defend and counter say a left roundhouse... and he comes up with his endless list of what ifs... what if hes taller/smaller/your back is against a wall/ your pinned/ etc etc etc.... at least thats what I am reading out of your post. The best way i have found to answer that to students is... this is teaching you to defend specifically against this type of an attack, under these specifics circumstances. other circumstances, and attacks will come later down the road, or the lessons will be learned in other techniques. As students spend time in the system and learn what is being taught.... and i mean the principles and theory, not just regurgitating memorized body movements with no idea why they do it, they will learn the answers as to how it will change depending on the situations variables... I have to hook up my sound to my computer before i can figure out whats said in that clip... probably another day or two

Uncontrolled fighter
Luckykboxer replied to Topic's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
ummm what? if you are talking about playful sparring then sure maybe. But any trained fighter worth a damn is not going to exchange punches ever in a real fight. I am a trained fighter and the last thing i ever want to do is give someone a chance to land a lucky shot and hurt me. Sure an untrained brawler can be dangerous. But a trained person who is going to trade or exchange shots is the most dangerous enemy to himself. -
Whats your favourite stance , Why?
Luckykboxer replied to Matousek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am sorry but this is an incomplete question. There is no best stance in general because each stance is designed for a different situation. I really doubt if you would like your cat stance if you in a position that wouldnt allow you to use it. Now if you said what stance do you think looks the coolest when you are taking pictures... or what stance do you like best for such and such situation then maybe you have a point. Its like saying what kind of dirt is best? without saying what you are wanting to do with it.
