  1. shorin ryuu, in pinna yondan two kicks after stacking(befor elbow strike) are front kicks or side kicks. also oppening of kusanku dai , after two block like passai we turn back for a kick, is that kick a side kick or front snap kick.
  2. good idea, I did it and love it, even in a short time , at least you learn what they are capable of. But still for us the idea is not to grapple with a grappler.
  3. if you think kokutsu dachi or kiba dachi is "like a coil of a snake" , next time try one block using kokutsu dachi during a full contact. imagine yourself in a soccer stadium ,standing between rows and being attacked from two sides, are you gonna stand behind your post and fight in Kiba dachi and use all the power of “coil of a snake”, I don’t think so. But I can promise, you can fight in sanchin dachi or Naihanchi dachi with no problem. Tekki comes from Naihanchi , Sensei Motobu one of the greatest full contact fighters ever, stated that his fighting stance is Naihanchi dachi . sensei funakoshi learned the Naihanchi from itosu ,he took it to Japan and in 20 years a fighting system like Naihanchi became a useless Tekki ,good enough for damaging knee and wining plastic trophies. each kata should teach fighting combinations and help a karate-ka practicing his/her techniques, it doesn’t need to be fancy but it has to be deadly. and natural shiko dachi is the deepest stand I can accept.
  4. first go to shotokan club , you will hate it ,then you can go to Goju-ryu club and stay there. they are both good and since they come from two different lineage of karate we can't compare them. Goju ryu has preserved more Chinese boxing elements compare to shotokan, I really think you should go to both classes and see them in action, you have a martial art background and I am sure you will find one of them more interesting based on your training preferences.
  5. http://www.uechi-ryu.com/videos/tc_videos.html check here
  6. Shorinryu sensei, I wish you had a dojo in Texas, it's hard to find a shorin ryu school here.
  7. shorin ryu, thanks for the link, he is a real master.
  8. shorin ryu sensei, 1-some of the the karate-kas either bend too much or bring their chin down so you may see back of their head or neck. as you do know better than me, the head should be kept straight and the whole upper boddy bends. 2- in kyokushin karate ,controlled breathing is one of the principles of kata ( beside Tempo and Force according to master oyama) 3- to my best knowledge in kyokushin karate below shodan all the katas are "H" or line (sanchin ,tensho) and suppose to start and finish in one point (or less than 6"), I also think this is include all of 8 mandatory katas. 4- you are a very nice judge. 5- what katas in your style finish not at the starting point? 5- thanks for correcting/analyzing my post
  9. I am a white belt in "Chayon-Ryu" it's a Korean style http://www.kimsookarate.com/ of course my main style is Shorin-ryu.
  10. 1- opening of the kata is very important for judges so , close your fingers when you bow, don't show your back of neck , practice the proper opening with a higher rank. 2- each technique start by a look toward the direction of movement, it shows your awarness. 3- all the kicks should finish with a complete control ,chamber your leg back 4- don't forget breathing and show it to judges. 5- keep your fingers closed in shutos, at least your thumb should be closed 6- allways work on the corrections you need for each kata in order to finish where you start. and good luck.
  11. Shorin ryu, I can't wait till you watch the katas and explain them here, I have heard that our katas are very close to ones chibana used to do, is there any way you can put them on a web site?
  12. I saw in the news that Germany will join Iran to create the second National league in TKD ,South Korea also will start a national league for 2005, I guess very soon we can see some international tournaments in clubs level as well. What countries are good in national level or world cup? Who is the host for the next world cup?
  13. I just watched the file after 2hr downloading, I would have used "upper handing elephant #13” technique which can decrease the take down time to 0.5Sec, following with “penetrating fortress #3” technique which causes the opponent pants to fall off(0.5 Sec). So I could finish him in a second and total time include packaging would have come to 1.5 Sec.
  14. I am mostly agree with both of you guys , the only thing I wanna add is that the changes have been made in shuri-te katas by okinawan ,Japanese, Korean have different natures , in the case of okinawan the changes are mostly natural, during adaptation of katas among different groups as they start to cross training, masters from tomari and shuri and different families got the katas from each others and adapted them to their own technical characteristics,You can see this in variations of passai or Kusanku. In the case of Japanese and Koreans katas have been changed according to their culture and their own martial arts. IMHO ,they have changed them too much that the essence of the katas has changed. Heian kata has nothing to do with pinan ,they just look the same . the essence of shuri-te as a speedy style has been changed to a rooted , low stances which is more familiar to Japanese eyes so they don’t look at it as a low class foreign style. Same with Korean, they don’t wanna admit that they learned these forms from their Japanese oppressors, so they change the names and techniques without paying attention that they are cutting the roots to the original style, Japanese and Korean styles are good but are not connected to shuri-te anymore and this is basically what they intended to do , to create their own style. At this point it really doesn’t matter that the katas been altered, we can consider them new katas with other applications.
  15. Shorin Ryuu, That’s right, the most famous ones that I know are tetsuo shimabuku(Isshin-ryu miyagi-kyan) and kenwa mabuni(shito-ryu higaonna-itosu), anybody else?
  16. I have a sony "clie" sj20/u, I like all the sony models, they work good, my advise for you is to buy a replacment plan along with the PDA.
  17. dingyuan, Shorin ryu comes from Shaolin kenpo and okinawan “Tode”, Tomari-Shuri-te or what we mostly call shuri-te is a speedy method compare to more powerful method of Naha-te It is also apply more linear blocking compare to soft circular blocking of Naha-te , a good shuri-te block even without reaction hand(when it gets the power from abdomen) can damage the opponent forearm and elbow severely. It is also consider to be more offensive compare to more defensive Naha-te. Steps are natural and narrow, in attacks when you slide with front leg ,the back leg just follows and drag to it’s natural fighting position.the Most famous kata of shuri-te is Kusanku, weapons of okinawa has lot to do with a shuri master called chatan yara. We have 4 major shuri styles, 1- Matsumura seito ( very pure shuri style goes back to bushi Matsumura the famous student of “Tode Sakagawa creator of Kusanku kata and student of Kusanku himself) 2- Shobayashi shorin ryu(by Eizo Shimabukuro) ,the lineage goes to sensei Kyan 3- Matsubayashi shorin ryu(by Nagamine) lineage goes to Sensei Kyan and tomari-te 4- Kobayashi shorin ryu(by chibana) lineage goes to itosu , this is what I practice as shorin ryu ,it has 6 kihon katas, 3 Naihanchi,5 pinan passai sho, passai dai, chinto, kusanku sho, kusanku dai, gujoshiho(spl?)
  18. this is what my sensei says he has done before and stopped a fight make a fist with let's say left hand ,support it with the palm of right hand and push it to the center line of the chest of attacker above solar plexus while he is coming for another push, this is a push not a strike using Seikens, it's painful and disturbs the breathing.
  19. dingyuan, goju ryu belong to Naha-te lineage and shotokan originally comes from Shuri-te , the characteristics of shotokan as a shuri-te should be natural stance ,natural movement ,natural breathing circular techniques ,during the time funakoshi introduced karate to Japan he had to adapt the techniques with Japanese tradition so all the stances slowly started to get wider and lower compare to original shuri-te and justification was to create strong muscles . Goju ryu from other hand kept most of original characteristics of Naha-te like controlled breathing, half moon steps, open hand techniques, ect. Also weapons is not part of shotokan but Goju ryu has okinawan weapon system incorporated .
  20. We have a former TKD black belt in our class ,he is the only one I have to use zenkutso dachi against his front snap kick into the makiwara while i am holding it, any body else I use sanchin dachi. and he has the best kicking technique I've ever seen.
