I find that when warming up children the microwave works best

You also need to add some back exercises. You can break it up so that you do chest, shoulders and triceps one day, then back and biceps the next. Then do all your leg exercises on day 3. Take a rest day and then start again. Abs can be done every day if you like and cardio 4-5 times a week.

FYI...the belt listed by your user name is based on the number of posts you contribute, not your actual belt level in the real world.

Do a google search on her and you'll see she really is a martial artist and golfer...as weird as it seems this looks like it is for real.

Things I like: Leaving work on a Friday afternoon... Wrestling with my kids... Being somewhere where the only thing you can hear is the wind and the birds...

There's no way you can just throw that info out here and not explain! There's got to be a great story behind that.

In order to trim down, and maintain/increase your aerobic fitness, you need to increase your cardio to at least 30 mins per session, 60%-80% of max heartrate, 4-5 sessions per week.

One last comment. I agree with Master Jules comments wholeheartedly. However, there is one element of this that prevents you from just letting it go. The fact that you are both on the board of the dance studio requires you to take some precautions. The board must be notified that there has been a conflict between you two and told what you have done to rectify the situation. That way this other person cannot try to submarine you w/ the other boardmembers. The type of person who would react in this manner would also be the type who would try to blindside you. Good luck.

We occasionally practice this scenario in our sparring class. We will do 2vs1 and 3vs1 attacks. I don't know if "style" plays as much a part of surviving this as practicing the strategies needed to escape.

All things in moderation. A drink now and then isn't going to hurt, and in the case of wine (no, not as in drinking a whole case of wine) a glass or two has actually been shown to have some health benefits. Obviously, if you are getting lit every day you are going to incur some problems.

This is slightly off topic, but does anyone else do group pushups in their classes? This is where you get 4 people and each person puts their feet across the shoulders of the person to their left, creating a square where all 4 people only have their hands on the floor. Then, as a group, all 4 people do their pushups. It is a fun activity to break up the regular warm-up routine.

The book was "Bushido: The Way of the Samurai" by Tsunetomo Yamamoto

I did the very same thing about 3 weeks ago. Fortunately my reaction wasn't as long lasting as yours. I also had a large bump on top of my foot and it was quite sore for about a week. Luckily, after a couple days of icing and some ibuprofin it returned to normal.

I use the Gu gels frequently when I do my cycling training. They are very good at keeping up your glucose levels when doing endurance training. You must also take care to keep hydrated since they will require fluid to help absorb them. If you are slightly dehydrated they can make you queasy. I wouldn't recommend them for MA training or weight training since you are not using up all of your stored carbs during that training. They wouldn't hurt you any, just that you'd be wasting your $$ in that case.

Ok, now at least people can understand where you are coming from, whether or not they agree with you. I have to agree with you on this point. It is much easier to disassociate from the act when you are standing several yards away. I am very sorry about your friend and I understand your anger but it is not "gun culture" that is to blame. This "psycho" who was "on drugs" could just as easily have stabbed your friend to death as shoot him. This was a result of the "bad parenting culture" and/or the "druggie culture" more than any "gun culture". This goes back to my earlier comment about thugs. In a traditional Samurai ethic I would agree. But not all sword carriers were like that. What about medieval European bandits? They carried swords and acted like thugs, killing indiscriminately and robbing. No different from thugs today. I never said anything about MA's destructive purposes. However, with the exception of the arts you mentioned above, most MA's teach you how to disable, hurt, even kill opponents. I agree that MA's should be more than just that and for me they are. Also, I have never achieved any sort of enlightenment through fighting. Would you allow a 17yr old access to your kitchen? There are dozens of razor sharp knives there that are no less deadly than a pair of kamas. Do you require background and psych checks for them? I stand by my statement that the problem is not the guns, it is the thugs who use them to cause harm. Take away the thugs and you won't have to worry about the guns. Take away the guns and you still have to worry about the thugs, and now you're down a weapon. With respect

My circumstances are similar to yours. I also used my kids interest in starting martial arts as an excuse to join myself. I also find myself much more interested in training than my children. However, I am lucky in that my children still enjoy classes which I think is because I don't make them go as often as I do. I have a little different situation in that our school offers classes and rankings in TKD, hapkido, and weapons separately. So what we do is for TKD we go to classes together and we only test when all 3 of us are ready so that we progress together and stay in the same classes. For weapons, I train about twice as often as they do and we test/progress at different times. I take hapkido but they do not. This way I can train as often as I want and they don't wind up getting burned out. As for not letting them quit, I took MA for 2 years when I was a kid and then quit and I regretted it. That is why I take it much more seriously now and why I was glad to have the excuse to begin again. I know this is running on, so I guess my suggestion is to try and keep them involved until their desire kicks in again, perhaps they are just feeling a little stale. Until then, keep your training going and maybe go without them from time to time.

"I never got girls when I was a kid. One girl told me, `Come on over, there's nobody home.' I went over. There was nobody home." RIP Rodney

My favorite Rodney joke: I have a terrible sex life. My wife cut me down to just once a month. But it could be worse, 2 guys I know she cut out completely.

I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from on this. If there were no guns would you be complaining about the "sword culture"? People have been killing each other since time began with whatever was available. A hundred years from now you'll be complaining about the "super-destructo ray culture". What is your argument other than guns=bad?
-
"Gun culture" seems to have become the polite way of saying "thugs w/ weapons". People are not generally afraid of those who use / own guns in a responsible manner for hunting, collecting, etc. Even though they might not say so they are afraid of the people not the weapon. So suppose we wave our magic wand and there are no more guns anywhere. Will people still live in fear? Sure they will because there will always be thugs who use whatever weapon is available to intimidate/assault/coerce others to do their bidding. That thug is going to be just as dangerous with a crossbow as he was with a gun. Get rid of the crossbows? Now he's got a knife. No knives? Now he's got a rock. Guns level the playing field for those who are not as physically strong and are confronted by an armed assailant. It is not the "gun culture" that needs to go away, it is the "thug culture". Just my 2 cents. For the record, I do not now nor have I ever owned a gun.

I don't know anything about the pros/cons of skipping but if you are worried about your knees try cycling. Excellent workout and very easy on the joints.

Not sure what your point is, and I'm not going to get into a debate about whether an inanimate object is good or evil. But I will say that, for a lot of infirm or weaker people, a firearm is an excellent self defense tool- IF the person who carries it trains with it!!! Just buying one and thinking it will protect you is as foolish as assigning intentions to it (good or bad)! That was just my sarcasm coming out. Sometimes my sense of humor doesn't translate well online.

It is perfectly safe. You can do moderate cardio everyday without any problem. Even after a high intensity cardio day some active recovery (low to moderate intensity) would be good. I would define low intensity effort at up to 65% max heartrate, moderate from 65% to 85%, and high as anything over 85%.
-
You could say the same thing about people who carry guns and we all know how well that is working out.

How is it possible that no one has mentioned The Godfather 1 & 2 yet? All time favorites! Also on my list: The Matrix (1st only) Saving Private Ryan Young Frankenstein the Indiana Jones movies (all of them!) And for spoofs check out Galaxy Quest. Not on my favorites list but a great spoof nevertheless.
