That guy should just surrender and go to jail now. He's too stupid to function in the outside world. )

Pat Morrita?
steveb replied to karatekaBR86's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
His name is Pat Johnson and he is/was a 9th dan in Tang Soo Do. He also played the referee in KK2 and KK3 and has been a stunt coordinator for a bunch of martial arts films. Info is from the internet movie database. -
what tricks can YOU do?
steveb replied to The_Devil_In_Disguise's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We were practicing those jump kicks recently at the dojo where someone would hold a hand pad up high and you would try to kick it out of their hand. I was holding the pad for one of the instructors as high as I could and when he kicked it it flew up and knocked down one of the ceiling tiles which then crashed down on our heads. -
Another "should I test?" thread
steveb replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Since testing is available to you in Jan. and you said you would test together I would wait. After all it is more about the journey than the destination, and the journey is more fun w/ friends. If it was a much longer wait I would have to think about it. -
Your sai have razor sharp points? Like a dagger?

There have been several threads on this topic already by people who have much more knowledge than me, but what it boils down to is don't use any more force than is necessary to protect yourself and escape. As a martial artist you are not any more or less liable than anyone else, after all you don't need to know martial arts to gouge someone's eye when they attack you.

Biking and running will both tone your legs. If you have fat on your legs you can't make it go away by working your legs. The fat doesn't "belong" to your legs, it belongs to your whole body. The only way to get rid of fat is to consistently do cardio exercises, at least 30 mins each day for 4 or 5 days a week.

Groan! Reminds me of an old bar sign I saw - Liquor in the front, poker in the rear

Sure. It can make you feel fuller so that you don't eat as much. Also, if you replace things like soda with water and/or juice then you are getting less calories and sugar which is much healthier.

Since you're doing a "duo" with your friend won't you both be doing the same kata together? If not, since you say you have a few months to practice why don't you try doing one of your open hand katas with your escrima sticks. Play around a bit and find which one works well with the sticks and then practice it over and over. I'm sure you can find one that will look great. Good luck!

Good luck, I hope you knock their socks off! (well, not literally, but you know what I mean)

Getting back to my original question, what are people's preferences regarding straight vs. rounded body, contoured vs. straight handle, round vs. square head, etc?

The two tonfa forms we learn are "Matayoshi no tonfa ichi" and "Matayoshi no tonfa ni". Our system is traditional Okinawan kobujutsu and our instructors lineage comes down through Seikichi Odo and Shinpo Matayoshi.

It might help if you define what type of balance you are referring to. There is physical balance which elliotspirett was talking about. There is mental balance i.e. aggressive vs defensive mindset. There is balance referring to type of attacks i.e. using kicks and punches equally. Maybe if you can explain your question more clearly we can help.

I will be learning tonfa forms soon and will be buying a pair of tonfa. I would like others' opinions on what they like / dislike in a tonfa. For example, there are square vs tapered tonfa, rounded or square head, etc. Also if anyone has a particular brand or maker to recommend I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Just trying to imagine the look on my kobudo instructor's face if a student came in and asked how to kill someone with a sword while looking "kewl"

Every school and every person is different, so it will take longer / shorter depending on the student's aptitude and dedication as well as the teacher. For what it's worth, my 2 kids and I will have been in TKD for 2 years as of January and we are just over halfway to our blackbelt. I estimate it will take us about 3 1/2 yrs total.

Free trial and money back guarantee on the internet? HA! I have some swamp land you might be interested in buying. Personally I do not do business online unless I have already dealt with them offline or KNOW that they are reputable, such as Amazon, etc. Too many scams out there, be careful.

Just one note about the BMI charts. If you have an athletic build the charts will not be accurate for you. They only take into account body weight, not the composition of that weight. Someone who is 6' tall, 200lbs with low body fat would be considered overweight, bordering on obese according to their charts. That same 6' tall person would have to lose nearly 25 lbs of muscle to reach the upper edge of their acceptable weight range.

The speed will come as your arms get stronger and used to the weight. Plus, once you are accustomed to using a full size / weight bo you will really be able to make that bamboo rod fly!

Call the IRS. They have programs to help whistleblowers. Also, while it may not be a crime to stand by and do nothing if you in any way now perpetuate or assist in this fraud you will most likely be charged. Best of luck, it's a sucky situation.
