  1. and rhythmic gymnastics IS in the olympics and it is NOT a sport!
  2. Hey lazy, do your own search! Seriously there are several threads on here that name sources for bo's
  3. Mostly length...a bo is usually about 6 feet long, a jo is usually 4 feet.
  4. Exactly. It's like the Marine drill team doing their fancy rifle show (like at the beginning of the movie A Few Good Men). Nobody confuses their drill with actual combat training, but that doesn't make it any less impressive or inspiring. Also, noboby (who doesn't want to get shot, that is) would argue that they do not know how to handle their weapons. Training in the fundamentals is essential but there is nothing wrong with having a little fun too.
  5. Horn broken, watch for finger
  6. Perhaps I am wrong but I don't think many MA's would start off their fight by grabbing the other persons wrist like the guy in the hat did. You are opening yourself up to many counters by doing that. He didn't look trained to me, more like a street fighter.
  7. volley.....return.....volley.....return anyone else as fascinated with this exchange as I am?
  8. Cold muscles do not stretch, they tear. Do a light warmup, then easy stretch, workout, then good stretch after.
  9. If you cannot talk back and forth with someone while running you are going too fast. Slow down a bit and mix in a minute or two of walking now and then and you should be fine. Work up to a solid 30 mins slowly. Keep it up!
  10. Unfortunately true. For some people all the talking in the world won't make a difference. They have to be shown that not everyone will tolerate their crap.
  11. Just get an ice pack and wrap it to your shins using an Ace bandage. Easy, cheap, reusable.
  12. Sorry, but the USA is not a democracy, it is a republic. This is illustrated in part by the use of the Electoral College. In a pure democracy you run the risk of oppression by the majority. The founding fathers specifically set up our government to prevent mob-type rule. That is the whole point of having the judicial branch to act as a brake on the possible dominance of one group of people.
  13. Wow, that really is impressive! For most people it is the other way around.
  14. Well if it didn't have at least a couple basic rules it would be illegal (and probably very distrubing). Can't have participants gouging out each others eyeballs or ripping off their testicles or breaking their necks.
  15. What works for me is everything in moderation. I eat a sensible diet most of the time, but about once a week I'll indulge myself and have whatever I'd been craving (usually pizza or wings or some such). That way I don't feel like I have to deprive myself of some of my favorites and I still have a much better diet than others.
  16. My understanding also is that you should measure from the web of the thumb to your elbow and add 1/2 to 1 inch. Where is Shorinryu Sensei? He is usually all over these questions...
  17. Check out https://www.trickstutorials.com He explains how to do many different tricks and has video clips to illustrate.
  18. The oldest person at our school is in his mid/late 50's, he is a brown belt and started about 2 1/2 years ago. We spar often and he is quite capable.
  19. Doing cardio workouts every day will NOT kill you. Most experts recommend doing 4-5 cardio workouts of at least 30 mins each per week to get maximum health benefits. I would not advise skipping 3 days between each cardio workout for the reason stated above. If you do a particularly hard workout you should rest or do active recovery (slower paced light exercise) the next day. Also, it usually takes about 2 weeks of inactivity before you start losing your fitness level. Skipping rope is excellent cardio work as others have stated as long as you can maintain it for about 30 mins. If you are just starting out and cannot maintain that duration then perhaps some cycling, jogging, or swimming would be better to begin with.
  20. Martial "entertainment"...it's not a sport. Sports do not have pre-determined winners.
  21. I had it done and it is not a fun experience. However, a day's rest and you will be fine. Good luck.
  22. wtf is "what the *uck"
  23. The question was meant to ask what other types of exercise besides MA people do and how often they do it. That would include running, swimming, weight lifting, etc outside of the dojo.
  24. To build your forearms use a barbell and do arm curls with a palm-down grip.
  25. I'm curious as to how many people on this board do cross training. For instance, in addition to my MA I also run 2-3 times/week and cycle 1-2 times/week. Anyone else care to list their activities?
