Grappling vs. Striking
Master Jules replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In police work, we do take a lot of perps to the ground.....usually hard....but then....thats if theyre resisting.....otherwise...its the standing, up against the wall/car kinda thing -
I think I understand what youre trying to get at here, but can you rephrase your post in a more understandable way ? Also, pardon my ignorance, but what does it mean to be " a LEO of some other form of security "

Generating more power
Master Jules replied to Ktulu's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Power generation coming from the hips is correct......for beginners.....what are you gonna do when you are fighting multiple opponents, and one of them has grabbed you around the waist, making a hip turn impossible ?,,,,,,You must learn to call the power to your hands, and doing this takes time.....like anything else.....the end result (my students have told me) is the feeling that you are getting hit by a bowling ball.....its the development of "heavy hands" -
Health Meditations: Have you heard of this one?
Master Jules replied to BakFuPaiGuy's topic in Health and Fitness
If you like those, then you should look into Earl Montegue.....He is a reknowned authority on Dim Mak, and internal chi gung styles of meditation. -
Wing Chun origins
Master Jules replied to JKDkid2's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Wing Chun was created by the head nun, Wu Mei.......and I think your friend either misquoted, or misunderstood Kayo. -

Grappling vs. Striking
Master Jules replied to STR33T GUY's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I went with the 50/50 choice......I think it is important to train yourself to be equally comfortable with a "stand-up, punch and kick" situation, as well as standing or ground grappling situation. -
I second the motion for the exact same reasons.

I love kata.....all kata.....thats where the secrets of the system are contained. Each Goju kata has its own unique "attitude", so somedays I prefer one over another. I really feel very much "at home" when performing Seisan, as it is known as a "fire" kata....suits my personality, and Seipai as well. as far as breathing forms go, I love Tensho.

Yeah....my master (Goju and Jujitsu) who stays with me from time to time (see "Uchideshi" thread....its funny) is a bit "eccentric".............ahem...........but he likes to beat the snot out of me during shime testing.......whether its punches and kicks, or beating me mercilessly with the shinai.....but the beauty of that is.....it did bring me to a "higher level" of focus and concentration. During one of my black belt tests, I was performing Sanchin kata, and he struck me in the lower chest/upper abs region with an ESCRIMA STICK....... which is a heck of a lot harder than any shinai Ive ever been hit with......he actually cracked the escrima stick, and two ribs as well......lotsa fun...lol....but maintaining the ability to focus and continue unfettered is the end product of proper meditation, whether its "standing", "seated", or "moving" Zen.....

Prayers Needed for Shihan (Master Sensei)
Master Jules replied to KarateChick06's topic in General Chat
Best wishes and prayers for you and your Shihan. -
The rank system is as follows : 10th Kyu 9th Kyu 8th Kyu 7th Ho (Ho is the term for "half step") 7th Kyu 6th Kyu 5th Ho 5th Kyu 4th kyu 4th Ho 3rd Kyu 2nd Kyu 1st kyu ShoDan Ho (Half step between 3stripe brown and 1st degree Black) ShoDan--1st degree Black NiDan--2nd degree Black SanDan--3rd degree Black YonDan--4th degree Black GoDan--5th degree Black RokyuDan--6th degree Black ShichiDan--7th degree Black HachiDan--8th degree Black KuDan--9th degree Black JuDan--10th degree Black There are other titles associated with ranking as well. They are : 1st and 2nd Dan--Instructor 3rd Dan--Sensei 4th and 5th Dan--Low level Master 6th, 7th, and 8th Dan--High level Master 9th and 10th Dan--Grandmaster Other Titles also include: Renshi--usually given at 4th, 5th, or 6th Dan. Renshi means "One who has mastered himself" Kyoshi--usually given at 7th and 8th Dan. Kyoshi roughly translates to "Wizard", and "a higher level of self mastery" Hanshi--usually 9th or 10th Dan who is the highest ranking practicioner of the system, and therefore, "head" of the system. Soke--a Soke is a creator, or founder of a system. For example.... Morehei Ueshiba was the Soke (or creator) of Aikido Chojun Miyagi was the Soke (or creator) of Okinawan Goju Ryu Kyu means "child", and Dan means "man" As far as the use of color belts.....some dojos have just a few....ie: white, orange, green, brown, black some instructors chose to have many more for whatever reasons.... One thing that will always hold though, is the Kyu/Dan system.

Welcome to the world of martial arts training. I wish you the very best, and Ill be more than happy to assist you in any way I can, especially with your Goju Ryu questions.....Part of taking tests is the "not knowing"......you can pretty much guess that youre not gonna be tested on something you DONT know.....so dont worry about that part.....youll be nervous....butterflies....probably wont sleep to well the night before....that kinda thing......thats all part of it....just take it all in.....do your best....remember.....its just another day....take it from someone whos been going through and giving tests for over 30 years......YOULL LIVE.....I PROMISE.....LOL..... Like I said before though......the "new"....the "first time"......the "unknown"......it forges you....it makes you better to go into it NOT knowing.....itll show you what youre made of....how you handle "the unknown"...... SO I MAKE THIS STATEMENT FOR ALL TO SEE..... As a teacher....and there are several of us here....I ask everyone who reads this thread and wishes to participate....leave you best wishes, your "pats on the back", and your words of encouragement..... BUT....... Although many want to "tell" what goes on at a test to be "helpful" to our new member "Intraining"..... DONT SAY WHAT WILL OR WILL NOT OR DOES OR DOESNT HAPPEN AT A TEST..... Doing so will take away the "unknown" that should be part of the experience of training in the martial arts...... Just my humble request....only for "Intraining"'s benefit.....
