Which is yet another reason why people should stick to the languages they know when studying the arts. If they wish to learn a foriegn language, let it be in a formal classroom setting, not in a dojo where a misunderstood directive could cause an injury.

Adrenaline question
White Warlock replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have noted it lowers my stamina, causes my legs to be weaker (tire more easily, shake, cramp up), and generally knocks the edge out of me. -

Self Defense Techniques anyone?
White Warlock replied to younwhagrl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good discussion, i disagree. lol, just kidding. You bring up some valid points and it presents to me something that may be frustrating our discussions. We are perceiving two aspects here, when in fact there are three: Principles - concepts, ideals, laws & theory Techniques - rudimentary positions or actions that encapsulate a principle or combination of principles Applications - specific, individual presentations of a particular technique that is applied to specific, individual circumstances In my discussions, i am merging principles with techniques, and presenting applications as techniques. In your discussions, you are presenting principles as principles, discussing techniques, and not presenting applications into the mix. Sound about right? -
Hehe, From the movie, "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," 1948 starring Humphrey Bogart. It is a classic. The line (modified to accommodate the topic), as well, is a classic and secured a Hollywood career for the man in the picture, actor Alfonso Bedolla.

An MT low kick converts to a powerful knee if someone attempt to enter, or close the gap. Not so cut and dry, the options available, they are. -

Think of a blink. it is so quick, it hardly impedes your vision. It is performed repeatedly, every day, all the time. It is performed relaxed, and without conscious thought. It is natural, autonomic. Bring your actions to the blink of an eye. Emulate it.

Wave Master Punching bag
White Warlock replied to orion82698's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm not keen with the wavemaster, as i find it rather 'cute,' but cheaply made and the bag on it is just too wimpy. Like i mentioned recently in another thread, i like the BOB. Filled with sand and some lead pellets in the base and the thing is a rock. As to siphoning it out to move it about... yes, that can be a pain, but so can water. But, i want to bring something to your consciousness. A Ceiling-hung bag isn't going to be moveable either. However, the absolute best bag i ever had was my old army duffel bag hung from a t-bar outside, filled with a cotton frame which was filled with a combination of sand and shredded sponge (or whatever they call that stuff). The thing weighed a good 200lbs or more, and when i banged on it i felt like i was hitting a resisting opponent. It truly helped me to develop my power punching. Still, if you're hoping for a home bag, i recommend the BOB... and sand... and lead pellets, and a dog. A small dog. -

what do u think the best time to practice is?
White Warlock replied to Chris05's topic in Health and Fitness
Endorphins are the body's natural 'morphine.' It is an inhibitor of neurotransmission, and thus acts as a pain reliever. Interestingly enough, distractions and interaction increases endorphin release. So while an interactive classroom setting would be a great environment for learning while being pumped by endorphins, a sit-down solo setting is not. In fact, this presents the issue commonly encountered in the classroom by teachers who have invigorating classes, but have poor test scores. The students come to the class hoping for an endorphin kick, and so their bodies jump the gun and shoot out endorphins, in the manner of the Pavlovian salivating dog effect, only to find they must 'sit-down' quietly and focus on completing a test. One instructor i read about found a great middle ground. By interrupting the testing process for 5 minutes every 10 minutes or so, and starting up a light-hearted chat about a particular question on the test, he would help the students to perceive the testing process as a social activity, which oddly enough allowed them to treat the test itself as a distraction, rather than the focus. This, in turn, presented higher test scores. As to doing katas and such revitalizing you, stretching increases blood pressure and heart rate and also flexes muscles and joints. Yawns do so as well. Thus stretching out is, in many ways, an extended version of a yawn. You'll notice that you yawn in the morning, which seems to help you wake up. You'll notice, as well, that you yawn at night while 'trying' to stay awake. You may also notice that when you yawn, you don't just do it with your mouth. Your entire face gets into it, and sometimes even your arms and torso... an extended stretch. Ergo, it does not have to do with the endorphins. A disclaimer: do note that studies on endorphins, and on yawning for that matter, are still being conducted and that most of the studies are in relation to the pain relieving effects, or on behavioral issues associated with self-injury. The effects of endorphins is a 'barely' covered topic that i've encountered in only a few teaching magazines over the years. Too bad, because i think it's a viable topic of research when posed in the instructional venue. Problem is, pharmacologists have more money to toss into research than educators do. -
Holding a stance for an extended period of time could injure your knees. I regularly perform walks, similar to duck walks, in which my knees are significantly bent and i travel about the mat... or around a park (when nobody is around, mind you). It's not the most attractive scene, but it really helps develop the stances, the transitioning aspects, centering, and leg stamina.

Well, actually a workout floods your body with endorphins, and thus hampers your ability to concentrate on such things as homework. I gather he was referring to meditation... -

I agree that doing it before you do your homework can get you injured in class, as you will likely be distracted. It is best to do as much as you can to clear your plate before stepping on the mat. Less distractions, less lingering thoughts, less accidents, less injuries, more time to practice later on.
