  1. Thanks, that's very helpful.
  2. Cathal (pronoucned cath ehl) is the first name of a mythological ancient Irish warrior. Just thought it was cool.
  3. Good show. What kyu level are you at now?
  4. Has anyone seen the protector yet?
  5. We have been lucky to not have someone who was disruptive. As for someone who needs special attention because they are honestly finding it challenging that's where you definitely just have to be patient. If they keep at it, they'll get it.
  6. If you have lasted this long without getting more cigarettes then you should be perfectly fine.
  7. This is a good threat, maybe better for the Health & Fitness forum, but anyway I'd suggest setting up an eating plan with your physician in cooperation with your sensei and a personal trainer from your gym. Alternatively you could simply seek assistance from a nutritionist. Sounds challengin to start out, but it has helped me greatly. I've lost a lot of weight and am much healthier.

I agree, go for combinations. Start off with simple ones, like sanbon-zuki. It's one shot to the head, and two to the solar plexus. Then work in two more punches after that, both for the head, or one for the head and one to the solar plexua again.
  9. Welcome to the Forum, Tokken. Introduce yourself in the Introductions thread if you haven't already. I'd like to first say that I have a great amount of respect for you. If indeed you are an experienced Yondan who has less than popular opinions on kata, and are willing to express them in this forum, you must definitely be very self-confident. Second, I'd like to comment on one of your points: I'd like to say that I have seen this many times. In our tournaments I frequently see competitors using kata-based techniques. The most recent one I attended, a friend of mine earned a silver in his category for using a reverse-hip iche-uke, and reverse punch. This allowed him to score and win that match.
  10. For us it doesn't much matter which kata you select so long as you do it the best you can. Our judges would much rather see a perfect Heian Nidan than a mediocre Heian Godan.
  11. We have something similar though we don't have a name for it. We do it over a training weekend every 3-4 months. It is officiated a master who travels to the session, and watches over it for the entire weekend. The Brown & black belts will train together over the entire weekend. The other coloured belts are welcome to join in only during certain training sessions.
  12. Positioning is quite important in grappling especially if you can take advantage of a weaker muscle group or joint.
  13. In performing a butterfly kick in your system, do you use it as two strikes, or as one? Also what part of your foot/feet do you use for the striking point?
  14. Is there a website which attempts to index the styles of Chinese martial arts?
  15. I had the opportunity to participate in a demo once, the instructor at the time was a Sandan and it was at a school. He did a lot of the same things as well. Here are some of the differences: 1. Before he went up & physically demonstrated his own techniques, he chatted about lower belts & beginner issues. 2. Had the beginners (myself at that time) do some kihon & a kata. We performed Heian Nidan (Pinan Nidan). 3. We then performed bunkai from 4 moves in that kata. 4. He did another little blurb about intermediate & brown belt levels...he repeated the demo in the same vein. But I think they used Bassai Dai. Afterward we did some throws, which went over really well. I was paired up with someone half my size, but a purple belt. I honestly think that when I was thrown that was when most of the kids decided to do it. I managed to land properly but I was still a little shook up. Next the two brown belts did some sparring, and then he did his own thing. The next week we had thirty new applicants and 20 stayed for a while...12 stayed until about green belt when I paused my own training. Of those 12 I'm not sure who stuck with it though.
  16. Good luck with the tournament, let us know how it went. As for any particular song I'm mostly in Rock. But for a good workout I'd suggest anything by Eminem or Dr. Dre because they tend to fire me up.
  17. Victory is ours. Now we should use the power of prayer to get us all some free pizza and beer to celebrate.
  18. Same with math. I think we're on to something here. Yeah, but math and music books don't kick back! I dunno I've seen some pretty nasty algorithm in my time. Brutal!
  19. Same with math. I think we're on to something here.
  20. We are online after all, howe about you try finding this form using an image search? We can compare the images to our own styles and discussion will be a little easier.
  21. I also am on a plateau of sorts. But the thing is I'd hate to always be on an upturn...that would suck. Can you imagine a time in your training where you are never on a plateau? No time to just train and enjoy yourself? Yep...enjoy it while it lasts. My take on plateaus are your brain's chance to reach a new high.
  22. We occasionally dance to a song now, find it's rythm and then use that particular beat or rythm in sparring. You'd be amazed how a song's rythm relates to fighting.
  23. I will be getting some diagrams etc. I will scan & email, just PM me.
