I hope no one mistook my opinion that spinning is a necessary training tool for I thought that's all that is required. We start off with learning the 15 basic spinning techniques, which teaches us how to move the bong around our bodies. Next, we learn the moving techniques, which teach us to move our bodies around the bong. 3rd, we learn the hung, which obviously brings both those skills togeather. And finally, we learn the pre-arranged sparring drills, which now places an apponent in front of us, trying to hit us and avoiding our strikes. There is no mandatory training in free sparring with the staff, but some of us in the upper ranks, that have very good control, like to spar once in a while to get the feel of a "real" attack.

I'll have to agree with DBZ, even though I like the show overall. Buu re-incarnated, and taken off to isolation to train with Goku? Paalease. Didn't like the Beebop ending either. I've missed the majority of the watered down Kenshin's, and I'm betting the "real" ending I've heard about will never make it to CN. -
You can only say they're bowing poorly if they're from your same art. Different arts have different ideas of what is proper.
-
If so, then we're breaking tradition. KSW is a Korean art.

Current commercial, or anytime? There were so many over the years. I used to love the Miller Light ones with either Dick Butcus and Bubba Smith, or Bob Euker. Currently, I think it's still Miller that has a bartender watch as all the people, from all the "...walked into a bar" jokes walks in. You know, the priest and the rabbi, a guy with a duck, etc.

It's a commercial for T-mobile, were you have a handheld (like blackberry) to recieve instant messages, it flips around to access the keyboard to IM back, it may even be a cell phone. The commercial is done in anime style, so sano is asking if this is an existing anime character in the commercial, or if it was all specifically created for the commercial. The thought had crossed my mind as well.

Both are very good points. Carrying a pair of pliers in a holster, that were used in a fight, into a bar or dance club is not only suspicious, but kind of funny looking. j/k The problem with the pinching idea, is that if they're not spring loaded you'll never have a chance to get them open after you're already engaged.
-
True True again, but you aren't supposed to keep spinning in the same pattern. That's why we have 15 different basic spinning techniqes, that we have to practice in both directions. Never the less, We seem to be on the same page, just slightly different font.
-
This varries from art to art. KSW does not want you to look up. As said previously, our philosophy is "If you can't trust them, then don't bow to them". However, we also say that you can easily see the feet move toward you, if an attack is coming.
-
O.k., I understand you're point, but your philosophy is slightly flawed. Spinning, in practice, builds up extremely strong grip. My forearms are a perfect example. It takes training, just like with everything else, to get to the point where you will not get disarmed by simply bumping into an outstretched arm. However, if you never practice spinning, and don't build up your grip strength, then yes it could be easy to disarm the practitioner, even when all you use are the "quick and decisive strikes". Second, the spinning does not occur when you're next to the combatant, as it appears you are describing. You perform any spinning when you are outside the range of attack. Once you step into the engagement area, the spinning stops and the quick movements you mentioned begin. This doesn't mean you HAVE to spin before engaging, it is just a method to try and find an opening before attacking. We do pre-arranged staff sparring before ever doing free sparring, and the spinning is always when you have range on the opponent.

Another one from CT. Welcome. -
I'm not really sure where you guys got the idea that the spin is supposed to be used as a strike, but that is incorrect. It is used, similarly to rebounding and spinning jool bong (nunchucks), as a tactic to throw off the defender so they don't know from where the strike is coming. Another source for a book is here. http://www.kuksoolwon.com/Merchant/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WKSA_01&Product_Code=KS_HB-V05&Category_Code=WKSA_HANDBOOKS However, I'm always for learning everything possible from a live person, rather than a book.

I don't mind admitting that I've watched that with my kids. Some of the jokes on there it takes an adult to understand.

Whoa! I'm not sure which Hapkido dojang you whatched, that didn't give a good workout. However, every one I've seen, including my own KSW dojangs, give a thorough workout. If you sit there for 2 hrs, constantly going through techniques, either throwing or being thrown and having to get up, you're going to be drenched in sweat by the end.

Introduction to Kuk Sool Won
SBN Doug replied to SBN Doug's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
No, I wasn't aware of that. Here is a slightly outdated list of our masters. A few on this list are a level higher now. And, there are some newer 5th dregee masters not listed. http://www.kuksoolwon.com/masters.htm -
First of all, this is not the topic of this thread. The topic is the attitude of the competitors in these type events, not their MA of choice. On that note, one shouldn't assume that only the MMA stylists are the ones with the attitude. There are pleanty Kobra Kai type gung-ho traditionalists too. Second, please show the appropriate respect for each other's MAs. If you've chosen one way to train, do not criticize what someone else's choice has been.

Welcome.

I honestly think they're covering something up (both U.S. and Canada). Because I've heard some of those same stories (lightning, etc.), which were later discounted by the "spokesmen". Also, even if Canada did increase its supply to the U.S. near the beginning, it's a moot point because Detroit, New York City, and parts of Connecticut were without power for a couple days just like you. So, don't think you're the only ones that took a heavy hit. I love the fact that a bill was defeated in U.S. congress last year to upgrade the antiquated grid that just failed. Tell me that won't be a sore spot for these guys come re-election time.

what would you do in this situation...

all different kinds of martial arts
SBN Doug replied to tokeabowl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No. There are literally thousands of martial arts styles. Kung Fu alone has hundreds, last time I checked.
